was just wondering if there was foam under the floor or just in the main seat boxes and front boxes. I have two 84 bayliners both the same but one a bow-rider and one a cuddy, trying to decided what one to redo.

Glad to hear more of these great boats are being put back into service. Mine was done five years ago and I am finally getting seats redone. More pics and progress please

Re: 1984 Bayliner Capr 1950i, Volvo Penta AQ125A Resto

Thanks everyone!

rykersdad1: Yeah I wish I had been able to do the bearings too. But I didn't have experience with that type of thing before, so I figured it's probably best to leave the worn in ones than try to screw up putting new ones in. Do they look very worn out to you?

And I'm glad you found the pdf files helpful! If you plan to use them keep in mind you may need to adjust the measurements a little (mainly just the height and width of the backrest piece) because your deck may not be at the same height as mine is. Keep notes on how the old structure was put together as you disassemble it. Also, the design isn't exactly the same as the old one, but it's pretty close. The openings under the seats are the correct size for the ice chest insert to fit into.

I've been lightly thinking about how the sound system is going to work out. I figured I would put two speakers in the front storage cavities facing towards each other, and two in the back, probably in those side storage things under the window. I should have run speaker wire as I was building so they would be hidden, but I think it will be ok to run them up under the cap along the perimeter.

mrchev: Yes, like rykersdad1 said there is foam under the deck along the sides, front to back.

I suppose which one you choose to fix up depends on your personal taste, but I would think that the cuddy cabin boat would be a little more difficult to work on. The structure on this boat is pretty simple, and everything is open.

proshadetree: Went by your thread and you did a pretty good job on your transom! I'll be looking forward to seeing posts about your new seats, I'm going to be headed down that road soon too.

Also I have a question. When I put all the new seat bases in I didn't screw them to the deck. I used construction adhesive and fiberglass on the seams. Should I throw some screws in there to make it more secure?

the factory ones didn't have any screws that i saw when taking them up. my entire back structure came out in little rotten pieces of nothing and i am as foreign to carpentry work as you are to mechanic work. i have a few friend that will help me when i get in a bind. I am thinking about putting a sub woofer in the one of the seat bases and building a box inside of the seat base so i can still fill the rest with foam. my father in law has owned my boat forever and he said the ski locker is always wet and wasnt very useful so when he did a bang up floor repair he closed it off and i plan to close it seal it and fill it with foam. that will make up for the lack of foam the speakers will displace.

I am partial to the bow rider as well. IMHO i think on this size boat the cuddy would be tiny and useless.

how much foam did you end up using also fiber glass and resin, trying to get a idea of how much stuff i need and idea on cost to do this restore. Were did you get the foam from. I'm leaning towards the cuddy because it has a porta poty for the kids, it is a rather small cabin. The bow-rider has a lot more room and is better for fishing. so for now i way the pros and cons, and keep a eye on your progress.

Re: 1984 Bayliner Capr 1950i, Volvo Penta AQ125A Resto

rykersdad: That seems like a good plan with the subwoofer. That's an ideal place for a speaker too. I'm still wondering about the screws, even though they didn't have them from the factory.

mrchev: I got 40 yards of fabric but I didn't even use all of it. Maybe 3/4. I also used 7.5 gallons of resin.

I initially had 16 cubic feet of expanding foam, but that wasn't enough. I don't know if it just didn't expand completely because it was cold or what, but I estimated the cavity volume to be around 10 or something, so I thought I had enough. There's a lot of waste with that foam too. It's messy. I got everything from US composites except when I ran out of foam, then I bought it from the local boat yard.

However I've been reading on here and it seems people have used a lot more resin than that. I suppose to do it the "right" way then you may need more. But the way I did it I used 7.5 gallons.

I also got the slow cure and thinnest resin they have. It was a terrible combination. Some things didn't cure for three days, and only then until it sat in some direct sunlight. I would suggest just working fast and just using the medium cure or fast cure.

Anyone else have opinion on screws in the furniture to the deck?

The entire resto is very well done especilly the engine nice detail work! The next time you fire the engine invest in some muffs that tub will run dry and you'll be in bad shape with the engine!

Thanks! Eventually I will get some muffs but I had it in the tub to see if the outdrive sucked up water, and it didn't.

I'm still in the process of sandblasting all the outdrive pieces. It's tedious waiting for the air tanks to refill every 2 minutes. I have tried using paint stripper and a sanding disk on an angle grinder to expedite the process before I hit the pieces with the sandblaster.

This is what the outdrive paint looked like before. It was pretty crappified and there was a lot of corrosion.

Here are all the pieces that are completed (sandblasted).

So far I got alumaprep and alodine. Now I'm a little confused on the type of paint I need to use. I posted a separate thread and no one replied at all. I'm planning on getting this primer: Pettit AlumaProtect Aluminum Below Water Epoxy Primer - Pettit (Kop Coat) 4400/01Q - iboats but what kind of paint should I get? The boat will go in salt water but it will not stay in the water for more than a day at a time. I want a paint that will last a long time. Help?

Ok, so I'm thinking:

  1. Sandblast
  2. Wash thoroughly with soap and water
  3. Treat with Alumaprep
  4. Treat with Alodine
  5. Use this primer: Pettit AlumaProtect Aluminum Below Water Epoxy Primer - Pettit (Kop Coat) 4400/01Q - iboats
  6. Use this paint: PET. PROTECT HIGH BUILD WHT GL - Pettit (Kop Coat) 4100/4101G - iboats

The page for that paint says that "it will chalk if not topcoated". Does this mean I need to clearcoat it too? Or do I need to finish all that off with a coat of polyurethane or something?

It's primer. It's not the top coat.

I noticed that after looking at it again. When I first looked at it I didn't look very closely.

I'm thinking about my interior, and I can't remember how the side panels go in. How are the side pockets configured? Are they closed in against the side of the hull? If someone has pictures of their boat, that would be very helpful. Thank you.

Ok, well I'm still working on sandblasting the outdrive. I'm down to just the lower housing and then I should be able to start the painting process.

In another category, I got new Wise seats today. I just kind of set them in there to see how they are and get started on attaching them. I also got the matching Wise vinyl to go with it for the rest, white and sand color. Hopefully I'll be able to really start putting the interior back together soon.

*crickets*

Well I'll just continue to talk to myself in here, at least for the sake of some kind of journal on this build.

I got the seat tracks pretty much done today and both back to back seats are sitting in there nicely.

Don't worry NP, I'm sure lots of people are looking at your thread, just maybe not posting. Might help if you post large images as I think people don't like having to click on thumbnails sometimes. You can do this by uploading them to photobucket and then pasting the image code into your reply box.

The seats look good! I have a bayliner as well and I'm sorry but can't remember how the side panels fixed on (I'm not replacing mine in the same way). It's not very good but this is the only photo I have of the side panels in place. I think they were probably bolted/screw to the cap through the 'lip' bit at the top. If I remember rightly the screw/bolt heads were put straight through the upholstery vinyl and then a plastic cap was put over the top to cover them up.

Hope this helps.

Hi jmmacky, thanks for the picture! I knew about the screws to the cap, I was just confused about the "floor" of the little pocket thing. It wasn't fiberglassed to the hull but I'm still a little unclear about how it goes in there. Does it just conform to the shape of the hull and just kind of rest against it? That's kind of what it looks like in your picture.

I didn't realize people don't like the small images. I prefer them because it keeps the post more condensed. I would do photobucket but I'm too lazy to figure out my login information. Lol!
