Nice to see it in the water. The bent prop could cause some of the issue with the noise, it is havoc on the drive unit. I know it is nerve racking when you are not sure about the engine, and you are out in the water away from support. I know when I finally splash mine later in the year I will be on pins and needles until I get to know the noise, feel, and vibrations of the Volvo engine unit.
Last time I had a prop straightened it ran $40, however that was years ago, and my last prop that I needed maint. on I sheered of all the blades! :grumpy: However, I talked with a guy local here in Oklahoma and he does it for $65.
On the engine topic though, Have you been able to find the sound barrier that was originally put into the engine covers for noise control?

Wow, some mixed feelings about that outing! Great to see it floating and running though for sure!

My local marina does aluminum prop repairs for $75.

Watched the video and I really have no idea of what I'm hearing on there. Is that the wind or backfires? Sounded like popping or something but I really can't tell.

Mullin: Yeah I know exactly what you're talking about. Those sounds surprised me too because I didn't hear them myself when I was out there. I think it was water under the hull slapping the bottom and resonating in the ski locker, I guess the microphone on my phone picked it up better. I remember hearing something similar when we were sitting still with the engine off. It could have been a combination of that and wind noise. I'll have to get back out there at high tide and make a better video when I fix the prop.

Okieboatguy: I threw away the foam that was around the engine because it was trashed. Replacing that will probably help a lot with any type of noise. I know a few places that sell acoustic foam. Maybe I'll pick up some of that or just gut a free couch off Craigslist. I know exactly what you're saying about the anxiety. I was expecting the engine or outdrive was just going to blow up any second! And wasn't helping that I dragged the outdrive across the bottom.

Bummer about the prop Nick, But i know the feeling. Around here, the back bays are just s series of channels, through the mud and sand. But, at low tide, its easy as the low spots become sand bars, and it like driving on a roadway, it the high tide that get everyone, as Jersey water can be "less than clear" like our air ;)

You may be able to score a prop off ebay for the 4 cyl cheaper that refinishing yours, alot of the bayliners get parted out.

As for the slow speed stalling, you may have to set the carb under load, i forget the procedure but its a 2 man job while underway.

All in all, it looks ok, she ran on a plane, even with the bent prop, and you made it back in without a tow....that alone goes in the win column. You'll get it right im sure.

Allbutwet, I guess you were right. I cheated though  I have a lot of interior left to do.

Zool that's the first thing I'll do when I get it back out there: tune the carb under load. As for the prop, I'll post my little fix. Don't know what everyone will think of it.

I decided to fix the prop myself since I didn't want to drop over $100 on a new one or pay the $92 that the local prop shop quoted me.

I just banged the fins out using a single jack and a block of wood. Sketchy? Yes.

I got them to where I thought they looked good by eye, but I wanted a more objective way to quantify their symmetry, since I know vibration can be bad for the drive. So I rigged up this little setup to check each fin to see if it matched the desired curve.

Basically the game is to get the fin surface to come within 1/32 of an inch of each screw.

And here are my results:

I painted it black because that's what color I had.

So what do you think? Safe to run? What type of equipment do prop shops use to verify symmetry or measure variance between blades?

I also figured out why I hit bottom even though I was in the "center" between the two shorelines.

Here is a picture of the bay I was in. I started out at the yellow circle and traveled along the yellow line, thinking that if I stay near the center then I'll be at the deepest part.

The deepest part of the channel is actually near the left side instead of the middle.

A little research would have saved me. Or a depthfinder.

Buy a new prop, keep the old one in the boat for an emergency... you'll probably need it soon since you don't know your water and don't have sonar. You risk ruining your prop seal and shaft if you run that old prop for an extended amount of time, then you get to buy a new prop, prop seal, and prop shaft instead of just a prop.

Buy a cheap sonar unit, they're worth their weight in gold and you can get a brand new one for under $100 or search Craigslist for a used one.

Did you replace the entire transom? If so what type of wood and epoxy did you use between the hull and wood?

Can I ask what kind of process you used to clean up your engine parts? I'm in the process of pulling my AQ131A in order to inspect it and clean it up. Your engine is the best looking restoration I've ever seen. Thanks.

The dash decal looks in really good shape, is that original or did you replace it? Mine is completely faded.
