hello all. after reading all the other resto/rebuilds, i finally have to post mine....well, what i have so far.

for starters, after patching what i thought was a hole, and with a little prodding, i decided there's no way "it'll be ok for another season...".

i mike said my boat was telling me it needed a resto. best i can do is rebuild, as i have no clue what it originally looked like, as the damn cap has been cut all the way around.
PICT2210.jpg

so...i'll post a few pics of what i've done already, but im not posting all 100 or so of them.

as stated in my "is this a hole?" thread, one of the PO's cut thru the stbrd stern hull doing who knows what.
here's the pic under carpet.
PICT2213.jpg

under that i found this......
PICT2251.jpg
the white 'power' looking stuff is where i was grinding from outside....it's foam dust.

and under that i found this.....
PICT2274.jpgPICT2271.jpg

yes, those are 3" wood screws, and yes, they DID puncture the fill hose.
that bare spot in the fill hose is where i grabbed it and the outer jacket just pulled off like rotten skin.
that "fire retardant jacket" now has the properties of a nasty latex glove.
and it's all soaked, but i cant tell if that's from the WONDERFUL glass job or all the effin holes in the glass. 🤦

oh, the whole thing was put together using staples THRU THE DAMN GLASS!
no wonder there's hardly any wood left.

and, like everyone else, i have some BIG help removing foam. :D
PICT2269.jpg

after removing foam (for 3 days so far) i found why the bow has water and rotten wood....
this is the inside of the bow eye.
PICT2287.jpg
not sealed whatsoever, and using carbon steel nuts!
gotta love rust and rot!

the foam count so far....

the current state from midships to bow.

oh...the whole thing looked like this when i pulled carpet. everything was cracked.
after seeing this, the decision was made....gotta pull deck!
PICT2219.jpg

A small flat nosed shovel works well on foam removal.

Howdy ke5jro,

Glad to see you started a resto thread...Sad to see you started a resto thread ... Amazing how a couple little holes can turn into a complete re-do...
Any how, the guys here will definitely help you through this traumatically fun experience and you will end up with a better than new boat...

I'll be tagging along to cheer, support, and harrass as much as possible...

Have a very Merry Christmas and a Prosperous and Healthy New Year!

Best Regards and Best of Luck,

Re: 1984 Baretta rebuild

got a lil bit more done yesterday afternoon in the bow.
of course i have more rotten wood.

PICT2293.jpgPICT2295.jpgPICT2296.jpgPICT2297.jpg

so, that concludes the deck removal.
now comes the rest of the foam, and then the stringers, and then i'll be able to start cleaning the hull.
somewhere in there i'll need to remove the motor to get the rotten motor mounts out.

will update as i get more done.

Merry Christmas to All!

Thank ye! Merry Christmas to you as well, a few days late. :)
She will be better than new, for sure. i'll actually waterproof the wood, whereas the factory didnt. ;)
I love the lines of this boat. that is what caught my eye in the first place.

as a side note, it's been raining here for the last week or so, and i havent been able to get anything done.
i dont mind the "cold" (45-50f), but i dont like the cold+rain.

more to come later.

Re: 1984 Baretta rebuild

hello all.
last weekend i realized just how much the bow was flexing while i was removing the rotten guts.
based on that, i decided to remove the engine and build a cradle for the boat to hold it steady.
the engine would have to be removed anyway to rebuild the mounts, so today i started working toward that end...
i was allowed to purchase a new chainfall (yay!! i've been needing a new one), which worked perfectly.

engine hanging while boat was moved.

engine sitting in it's winter home. (will be covered)

will be starting on the cradle tomorrow.

Great to see such awesome progress. Are you going to change over to a Mercruiser drive?

Re: 1984 Baretta rebuild

Brings back memories of a couple years ago when my 1989 Beretta had a small soft spot. Ended up replaceing almost all the deck and some stringers. I wish I had pulled the motor out at that time. Just pulled motor out this summer so I can rebuild motor mount this winter. Looks like you are having fun. Good luck with the rebuild. I will be starting a 1968 Starcraft bass boat total restore in a week or so.

Dang Allen, you are tearing the demo up! Alot of your pictures look eerily familar. I see you got the same hoist I did. Did you find it was twisting your chain the closer to the top you got?

Looks like you're off to a great start. Brings back a lot of itchy memories when I restored mine. I guessing your transom fared as well as the rest of your deck. Godspeed

hey jay. you are my inspiration man (along with a few others). without your videos and info-packed rebuild thread, i dont know if i would have even tried this. thanks so much. :)
as for merc, probably not. i've known a few ppl whom had good luck with omc, and i'm quite familiar with them, so im sure i can keep this drive reliable and smooth. i have already rebuild this one, new bearings, seals, shift cable, wp impeller, and its quite smooth, no noise, shifts great...and i've always liked omc...they raise a lil higher and turn a lil tighter than merc. i know it dont make very much difference in the grand scheme of things, but its another excuse for me to keep it. ;)

yep yep...small soft spot. thats how this started, too. lol oh, yeah! im having a blast with this. learning a ton, too.
i'll be watching for that starcraft rebuild thread. thanks.

im trying to Troy. lol i was hoping to get all the rot out by new year. still got a ways to go, tho.
yeah, i noticed that we have same hoist. i like it. i didnt have any problems with mine.
before you put a load on it, make sure the chain is straight. these little ones aren't bad. i use larger ones at work occasionally, and when those chains twist, things get nasty.

actually, the deck fared better. i found multiple voids in the transom few days ago. will know more when i get it on the cradle and resume the demo.
thank you.

Re: 1984 Baretta rebuild

started building cradles and removing boat from trailer today.
was so much easier than i had anticipated, too.

first, build cradle for stern....
PICT2353.jpg

i figured it would be easy to lift the stern off the trailer to assist in removal.
PICT2354.jpg
this pic also shows where the glass pulled off the motor support.
port side has same problem.

stern lifted and secured, ready to pull trailer from under boat.
PICT2356.jpg

with the chainfall holding the stern, i was able to lift the bow and walk it off the trailer.
it worked out very well, with hardly any weight on the bow.

boat off trailer. using the 2x4 and level on top to keep boat level.
PICT2359.jpg

boat off trailer and sitting comfortably on cradle...so far, so good. :)
PICT2361.jpg

used a tie-down strap to lift bow to level out and measure for bow cradle.
started cutting wood and building bow cradle, then it got dark, so i had to stop.

more to come later.
