Re: 1984 Baretta rebuild

quick update.
todays work was putting in the forward bulkhead, and it went so much easier in my head.
i had to loosen clamps 4 times to get the height right and everything where i wanted it.
anyway, here is some pics from last nite and today...

i had a bit of time over the last week while waiting for ANOTHER 5-gal bucket of resin, so
i started working on the deck wood.
here is dry fitting the aft sides and fuel cell cover.
PICT2660.jpg
the circle is for the inspection port above the fuel cell. i havent cut it yet.

closeup of my line locker.
this area wasnt used in the original deck, and i can use the space.
PICT2661.jpg
there are gaps and im really not sure how i managed to screw it up like that.
oh well...nothing a bit of PB and glass cant fix.

here is the fit of my forward bulkhead.
the keen observer will notice the wedges on the hull holding the height.
the large gaps on port and starboard are on purpose.
with the bulkhead being a single piece, i felt that lil bit on the sides wont matter.

Re: 1984 Baretta rebuild

Yeah I too am amazed at how much I have gone through, but I have also gone through almost 25 yards of CSM and almost 20 yards of 1708, between those two and the sheets of plywood that all need at least a layer of CSM on them before install and the tons of tabbing, etc...this old tub has definitely been drinking it up...:)
yeah, but you're further along than i am, so it's not that bad, all things considered. i've only gone thru 12 yards of 1808 and 5 of CSM. with my 11 gallons. its' still an eye-opener. :)

The club is, in my humble opinion, already existing through several of us crazies that have been at this for at least that long, some even longer...
The only membership fee is that you have the stick-to-it-ivness to have come this far and are ready, willing and nuts enough to keep on pushing through to completion...;):D
hahahahaha. good enough for me! ....and it seems i fit the requirements. lol
i just hope i dont have too much longer. im tired of this thing sitting under my carport...i cant move large things in and out of my shop cause the boat is parked in front of my bay door. ;)

Re: 1984 Baretta rebuild

hey decker. thanks. i think it's going quite well, too.
would be better if i had more than 2-4 hours a week i can work on it.
yes, welcome to the club! at least you're among friends here! lol

now, a quick update with tonites progress....
first order of business after putting the girls to bed was to clean the shop.....again.
PICT2667.jpg
this is due to my girls finding the box of peanuts that the resin came in.
PICT2663.jpg
had a pic of both of them in there, but cant find it now.

so, anyway, i did a dry fit to make sure i had everything i needed, and within arms reach.
PICT2669.jpg

after bedding...i ran outta pb and didnt feel like making more tonite.
i have enough gap to squeeze more in after this sets...prolly tomorrow.
PICT2670.jpg

and earlier i noticed the date on my camera was off by a day.
at least it was an easy fix.

that's all for tonite.
g'nite iboaters

looks like the girls enjoyed themselves...

loooks like progress is coming along good...

Looks great

Having the girls play in the peanuts probably filled the garage w/ laughter, nice to have that instead of what filled the garage during the tear-down, demo & grinding phase....

Much better then having them play in the resin that came in the peanuts

Hopefully they'll soon be enjoying the results of your efforts, laughing & screaming while you & yours are USING the boat. :)

OMG!! I could just see her sitting in a bucket of open resin..

She looks like she was having a great time..

Everything looks like it went together just like you planned..

hey troy. yeah, it is...cause i have before. lol :)
they had a blast, for sure. the hard part now is keeping them OUT of the peanuts.
im making headway, slow and steady.
thanks

hey jb. they thoroughly enjoyed the peanuts....and have begged to go back everytime i go outside. lol
my oldest (in the pic) wanted to play in the mekp, but we put a quick stop to that.
and, yes, there wasnt much laughing and froliking during the demo/grinding.
but, you dont know anything about that part, do ya??? LOL
yeah, if things go as planned....who am i kidding....it'll be another year or so before i finish.
thanks for stopping by.

hey decker. yeah, i got that mental image as soon as i read it. :hororr::grief:
i have video of her throwing them damn things, and just having herself a total blast. lol
it seems like it fit quite well, but cant be sure till my damn PB dries....it was like 58F here, and i only mixed at 1% instead of the 1.5% i wanted to for the temp....so it's still not totally cured and i cant pull the clamps off yet.

Re: 1984 Baretta rebuild

hello fellow iboaters in dry dock.
another quick update.

yesterday i had a bit of free time to do a lil work, and installed the last bit of wood i had cut.
PICT2672.jpg

the pieces in the middle are to hold the radius on the outer stringers
PICT2673.jpg

right now, that's all i have. not sure if im gonna be able to do more tonite/tomorrow or not yet.

more to come...stay tuned

Re: 1984 Baretta rebuild

yeah, we got a lot of rain thurs/friday. a lot more than i wanted, for sure. lol
wasnt quite enough to float the boat away tho, so that's good. ;)

yeah, it wont be long and i'll be putting a deck on her. im thinking i'll finish the deck before i start on the bow.
im also thinking of cutting out the consoles and rebuilding them while im at it. i dont care for the port console, and if i do one, then i might as well do both, and try to make them somewhat matching.

Re: 1984 Baretta rebuild

hello all.
quick update from sat nite/sunday...

too cold to glass, so i started installing the fuel lines.
it just seems so WRONG to cut hole in my fresh wood/glass.
but, i did. this was sat nite
fuel fill done. waiting for my ss clamps to get here
PICT2675.jpg

so, not being able to find my 1" hole saw, it was a good excuse to make a trip to the big orange store.
while there, i found these...
PICT2678.jpg
so, i said, sure, why not? after all, it IS a new tool. :D

i tried the 1" here. this is the tank vent to outside. it is VERY aggressive, and i dont recommend it for drilling 'glass.
this is the start. it kinda tore the glass a bit going in, but i can fix that.
PICT2677.jpg

comming out, however, it ripped.
PICT2676.jpg

so, in the interest of dry dock service and passing on the knowledge, speedbor works great for wood.
on glass.....not so much. but it did make a great hole in the wood. ;)

i still have to clean up the holes, and i think im gonna grind out where that speedbor went thru and patch it before i do any more. when i get back on and finish the holes, im gonna use the 'ol trusty holesaw. it makes a much better cut in the glass.

the holes will be cleaned, and coated with resin before final hose install, then both sides will be caulked with 3m marine adhesive/sealant after the hoses are in place.

Re: 1984 Baretta rebuild

Hey Allan,
Everything is looking good so far, great work!
Couple of tips...
To keep from tearing out the glass and wood when making big holes in them, clamp some sacrificial plywood to either side, let those tear out instead of the piece you are drilling...
Also when using a hole saw, if possible, don't drill all the way through from one side...when the guide drill breaks throught he opposite side, stop and start the hole saw from that side...will make a nice clean cut...
Next item...don't glue in your hoses with sealant, at some point in the future they may need replacing...instead, make the holes big enough to slip in a piece of PVC pipe big enough for the hose to slip through and glue it in with some PB...it will seal the inner edge of the hole and create a conduit for easier insertion and removal of hoses, plus it creates a sort of "grommet" to prevent the hose from chafing...
And finally, you see the shadow of the previous vent hose on your fuel tank...that is caused by the rubber in the hose corroding the aluminum...if possible, use some PVC spacers glued to the tank with some epoxy or 4200/5200...
Happy 2'sday...:)

hey gus. thanks for the comment. comming from a master craftsman such as yourself, that is making my head swell...

actually, i was gonna post about that. the large holes for the 1-1/2" fill hose cut great, and i did them all from one side.
i used a Milwaukee Tools 2-1/8" holesaw (the white one). i dont remember the tooth count offhand, but it was rather fine.
this is after drilling, smoothing, and sealing.
PICT2680.jpg PICT2681.jpg

Next item...don't glue in your hoses with sealant, at some point in the future they may need replacing...instead, make the holes big enough to slip in a piece of PVC pipe big enough for the hose to slip through and glue it in with some PB...it will seal the inner edge of the hole and create a conduit for easier insertion and removal of hoses, plus it creates a sort of "grommet" to prevent the hose from chafing...
i have thought about that, but i now have the holes done, and i'd have to fill and re-drill to change them.
PICT2679.jpg
however, im looking at it like this....the original hoses are what i removed, and they lasted this long with no problems, and would still be good if the PO didnt run the wood screws thru the fill hose. the vent is still good, and i put it on another project (not marine, tho). the hoses i have are also uscg type a1, and im betting on them lasting for a while.
i understand the actions im taking, and i feel better if i can totally seal them in.
sure, i may have to rip things out at some future point to replace, but i dont think it will be any time soon.

the other thing is the tank area is open to outside, whereas the other compartments are not, so i want to completely seal everything i can. this is my main reason for sealing the hoses in the holes. i will be pouring foam but in the off chance water gets in the foam'd compartments, there is no drain hole. i am betting on not having water anywhere but on the deck, and running down the inside to the bilge.

And finally, you see the shadow of the previous vent hose on your fuel tank...that is caused by the rubber in the hose corroding the aluminum...if possible, use some PVC spacers glued to the tank with some epoxy or 4200/5200...
yes, i have refit the vent barb to move it 90*ccw so it wont run down the tank.
now, it exits thru the stbd side stringer without touching the tank.
however, the tank is plastic or whatever that "cl-100" material is
PICT2225.jpg

Happy 2'sday...:)
thank you for your kind wishes. we sure needed them yesterday, as our 3 year old was running 102.4 fever, and last nite our 14 month old started with a 100.3 fever.
however, today has been a bit better, and hope you had a great day. :)

Gotcha...didn't realize the tank was a fiberglass type...at least that's from the info I have gathered thru the interweb...
And I totally get what you got going on with the routing of the hoses...excellent thinking...should be good to go...
Hope the young ones get over their yuckies:sick: soon...
Carry On!:)

Re: 1984 Baretta rebuild

much thanks gus! i appreciate the input, and as was stated in one of your threads, that 'looking to help total strangers', with your advise and comments is priceless. may karma be as kind to you as you are to others.

i wasnt sure if i had that explained the way i have it in my head, but it seems you get my drift, so, yeah, im betting this way will be much better than the "chop hole and hope it holds" that was originally in there.

actually, im kinda jumping the gun here, but if you have (or anyone else has) any advise on sealing the hoses where they go thru the deck, i'd love to hear it.
right now, im still working on gettin that deck plate cut and fit (read....not even started yet), but when i do i'll post pics.
im thinking of going the same route with it....sealed with resin around the cut, foam to bottom of deck, then the marine adhesive around the hoses to deck.
will post more pics as i get more done.

Re: 1984 Baretta rebuild

hello fellow iboaters. it's been really cold here (for louisiana) in the last couple months (20-30F), so havent got anything worth talking about.
plan on doing a bit of glassing tonite, as the temps have cooperated the last couple days, and all my material is warm enough to use.

on a side note, i've been working 6 and 7 days a week on the last 3 jobs since thanksgiving, so no real time to do anything.

hope all is well and will check in again later.
