Re: 1984 Baretta rebuild

hello iBoaters. hard to believe time flies as it does. been gone almost a year.
quick updates....

no progress on fighting over title/registration of boat. will transfer everything to MS and will be able to register there.

with that said, i haven't been able to keep away from working on the boat over the past year. early may, i started on the saw slit a PO did, and have it sealed, but not finished.
first pass...3 layers of 1.5 CSM inside.
PICT2460.jpg
outside bottom of repair.
PICT2462.jpg
second pass....5 layers of 1.5 CSM inside.
PICT2466.jpg
2x4 to hold shape. first pass bowed down (as expected), and used this setup to move back into place.
PICT2468.jpg
have 4 layers outside but no pics of that or anything after...
camera broke about 5 months ago.

progress as of today, 18 feb 2013...
all major hull grinding is done
started stocking wood, glass, and resin
all 4 transom pieces cut
first transom piece installed

as a side note, i have a 35gal trash can 3/4 full from glass dust.
i had no idea it would be this much.

will work on gettin pics whenever i can.

Glad to hear you can register the boat..
Good to see you back working on it..
The dust never ends..
Looking good on the patch work.. Put a couple of layers of 1708 over the patch on the inside of the hull..

Re: 1984 Baretta rebuild

hello fellow iboaters.
quick update, with pics! (enjoy gt1m. :) )

total of 5 pieces for transom. top is double thickness.
i had to install wood before glassing due to bends and twists used in transom.
used PB between outer skin and wood, and filled gaps between wood with thick PB.
when clamped down, the PB oozed out from between wood and skin. great fill, and very solid now.
PICT2501.jpg
PICT2502.jpg

after the PB cured and was smoothed out, it was time to glass it.
i used a single layer of 22oz roving, covered by 2 layers of 1708.
this is after the transom glass cured, and i started on framework.
right now, this is single layer (and tab) on bottom of lower mount, and single tab where mount meets bulkhead at hull.
PICT2529.jpg

i made a filler with resin and chopped strands (1/32" and 1/4"), then poured it in...gravity pulled into gaps under mounts.
it filled great! pics later.

this is the saw slit, as stated before. the patch is complete, but not gelcoated yet.
outside patch is (from inside) 1708, csm, 24oz, csm, 24oz, 1708, 1708.
the original 12 layer patch was eventually about 4 or 5 layers of 1.5oz csm/1.5oz cloth. the rest was ground down to smooth out/blend in before using the thick structure glass.
PICT2525.jpg
PICT2526.jpg
right now, it's sticking out further than the gelcoat. wanted to make sure i had enough to grind back and smooth out before gelcoat to keep uniform.

the inside was covered with a layer of 24oz roving, then 1708.
no good pic of it yet.

as a side note, all structural parts were smoothed and excess resin squeezed out using 3/4" bubble roller. i really had no idea all that resin was still in there till i started using the bubble roller.

more to come later.

That transom is a piece of art! Very well done! nice job working through the challenges on the transom install, sounds like you have a solid foundation now to continue. The glass work looks great as well.

Uhmm on the transom, you stated "i used a single layer of 22oz roving, covered by 2 layers of 1708." Hopefully you meant AFTER an initial layer of CSM??? The roving requires CSM to be layed first to give proper adhesion to the wood.

thanks craig. it was a challenge...5 different angles, and the top has a radius to it, as well. i wanted to do a single piece of wood, but there was no way i could bend it like i needed to.

thanks gt1m. that transom's already much stronger than the sh!t i pulled out of there. (before rot, of course) :)
the patch is quite solid. i kinda bounced a lil bit on it after it cured, just to check give and listen for cracks...and found no problems with it at all. decent give, and no cracking sounds. im pleased with it.

hey WoG. yes, there is a layer of the 1.5 csm under the roving. i just didnt list it earlier.

no updates right now, as it's been raining here all week.
more to come later.

hey troy. thanks much. i just couldnt stay away. i see you still working on your boat. that gelcoat looks good. and i noticed you migrated a bit north, too. ;)

quick update...
bilge area glass is done.
PICT2535.jpg
the port glass looks funny in this pic. it's the flash glare. i had to go back out there and look again after i saw the picture.

i have 2 layers of 1808 on each side of stringers and motor mounts, one layer of 1808 on bilge side of bulkhead, but have not capped the stringers.
PICT2540.jpg
it looks like there is NO glass on the bottom of the bulkhead in this picture, but there is.

started cleaning for the next 'section', which i call the line locker area.

this is the inside view of the patch fixing the saw slit. this is layers of csm, 10oz roving, 1708, and 1808 on the inside....i dont remember the layers orders, tho. it's been ongoing for over a year.
PICT2534.jpg

the outside has csm, 1708, 1808 and 22oz roving.
total, the patch is a hair over 1/2" thick.

hello fellow iboaters...
time gets away from me, again, but here is a quick update with a few pics.
this is line locker and fuel cell before glassing.
IMG_1783.jpg
you can see the 4# foam im using under the motor mounts in the center right

...after glassing
PICT2651.jpg
PICT2653.jpg
its kinda dirty, but not affecting anything right now.

roughing in the ski locker area with forward bulkhead
PICT2659.jpg
i had to put wedges under the bulkhead to get the consoles level.
turns out i cut too much off the top of it, so it wasnt high enough.

forward bulkhead from bow looking aft.

Yeah I too am amazed at how much I have gone through, but I have also gone through almost 25 yards of CSM and almost 20 yards of 1708, between those two and the sheets of plywood that all need at least a layer of CSM on them before install and the tons of tabbing, etc...this old tub has definitely been drinking it up...:)
but, uh....i didnt know we had a club for the long-term resto....there isnt a membership fee, is there??? LOL
The club is, in my humble opinion, already existing through several of us crazies that have been at this for at least that long, some even longer...
The only membership fee is that you have the stick-to-it-ivness to have come this far and are ready, willing and nuts enough to keep on pushing through to completion...;):D
