Re: 1984 Baretta rebuild
hello fellow iboaters.
quick update, with pics! (enjoy gt1m.
)
total of 5 pieces for transom. top is double thickness.
i had to install wood before glassing due to bends and twists used in transom.
used PB between outer skin and wood, and filled gaps between wood with thick PB.
when clamped down, the PB oozed out from between wood and skin. great fill, and very solid now.
after the PB cured and was smoothed out, it was time to glass it.
i used a single layer of 22oz roving, covered by 2 layers of 1708.
this is after the transom glass cured, and i started on framework.
right now, this is single layer (and tab) on bottom of lower mount, and single tab where mount meets bulkhead at hull.
i made a filler with resin and chopped strands (1/32" and 1/4"), then poured it in...gravity pulled into gaps under mounts.
it filled great! pics later.
this is the saw slit, as stated before. the patch is complete, but not gelcoated yet.
outside patch is (from inside) 1708, csm, 24oz, csm, 24oz, 1708, 1708.
the original 12 layer patch was eventually about 4 or 5 layers of 1.5oz csm/1.5oz cloth. the rest was ground down to smooth out/blend in before using the thick structure glass.
right now, it's sticking out further than the gelcoat. wanted to make sure i had enough to grind back and smooth out before gelcoat to keep uniform.
the inside was covered with a layer of 24oz roving, then 1708.
no good pic of it yet.
as a side note, all structural parts were smoothed and excess resin squeezed out using 3/4" bubble roller. i really had no idea all that resin was still in there till i started using the bubble roller.
more to come later.
