Re: 1984 Baretta rebuild

I noticed in the last pic that you added some 2x4 runners to the cradle. Did you put some carpet scraps on them? If not, I would recommend doing so. When you're up in the boat doing demo, the wood rubbing on the hull will not be a good thing.

Re: 1984 Baretta rebuild

Well, my wife went back to work today (3 week vacation), and i decided it was a great day to call mom-in-law to watch the baby...so i can get outside and get to work! :D

I got started bright and early (which is 9am when im off work), and managed to get the stringers out, and started on the transom before i had to stop.

PICT2375.jpg

the transom had gaps in the glass at the bottom and stbd side, so there are places that have NO wood left. it really isnt bad, considering i think it's all original except for the "repair" that some PO did.

it's comming along, altho it's slow.

stay tuned...more to come

Re: 1984 Baretta rebuild

after fighting with the damn glass dust, i had a brilliant flash of insight...WASH IT OUT!
i mean, hell, it's ALREADY rotten....what's a lil water gonna hurt, right?
so, i plugged in the battery, put a catch pan under the drain hole, and used the bilge in the pan to move the water from pan to side of shop. :D
PICT2376.jpg
man, does that make it so much easier to see what i need to do now.

as suspected, the transom fared just as well as the deck did.
the stbd side had wood mush on the lower end (which is where i was hearing voids behind the glass), and
the bottom middle was the same around the drain hole.
PICT2377.jpg

well, that's all the time i had for today.
PICT2379.jpg

now its time to get ready for Ryan's tonite...we need a change from the 'normal' places we go. lol

until next time...

Re: 1984 Baretta rebuild

hello fellow iboaters.
with the changing weather all this past week, i have managed to catch a cold...which sucks much @$$.
i shouldnt have done anything this weekend, but i did a lil bit of grinding yesterday for a couple hours.
im paying for it today. i feel like hammered dogsh!t.

however, i managed to get a very small amount done, and it IS progress...
the damn dust is everywhere. we've all read the posts about the glass dust and how it gets everywhere, but this is something you really dont understand until you actually experience it. just reading and looking at other's pictures DOES NOT do it justice.
PICT2383.jpgPICT2384.jpg

this is between the bilge and fuel cell, and took the most of my time...about 2 hours or so.
i dont know why it was built up like it was, but looks like they had too much resin mixed with nowhere to put it, so it was just dumped in here. turned out to be about 1/2" thick, with 2" pooled up around the corners. then the spots where the ridge starts was where they stuck in blocks and resin for the stringer-to-motormount patchjob. it was thick also.
as i only did a quick job, and wasnt feeling well, there are many highspots that can be seen....and was hard to see with all the damn dust.
PICT2387.jpg
i dont have a good "before" picture showing the buildup after i removed the wood, but this kinda shows the buildup. it's the area in the lower right corner, and the thickness can be seen a little bit. the water can also be seen pooling in the low spots. another good reason for washing out with water at this point...with the hull level, i can see where my drainage problems are, and correct while im grinding. :)
PICT2378.jpg

this is after cleaning the thru-hull circular saw slit. the PO glassed over everything without cleaning...found carpet glue, trash, and a leaf UNDER the glass.
PICT2386.jpg
still have a lil cleaning to do on this part before patching. considering patching this before cleaning the rest...havent decided yet.

that's all i have for now.
until next time...

Sorry to hear you are sick Allen. You made good progress from what I see. I am not looking forward to the 'glass sand dunes. That is a lot of dust!

Re: 1984 Baretta rebuild

hello all. it's been a while without an update, and the current update is this.

all work has been halted.

i have not been able to register or title my boat due to louisiana's strict boat reg laws. :(
so, until i can get this thing titled, i wont be spending any more time or money on it.
yeah, im bummed about it, but such is life.

Re: 1984 Baretta rebuild

Sorry to hear that Allen. I have been wondering where you have been. I need to get my boat licensed still. The forms are rather confusing to me. They ask for a bill of sale, which I don't have, but I have a title from Ohio, hoping that helps me when I get around to getting the numbers for her. I have read on here where others have found "creative" ways to get paperwork.

Re: 1984 Baretta rebuild

hey troy. yeah, you gonna need a bill of sale or *SOME* form of "change of ownership" paperwork showing from the registered (or titled) owner to you....no matter how many owners in between.

You have put in some really hard work on this boat.
Sorry to hear about your problem.
Hope you can get it all worked out.

Re: 1984 Baretta rebuild

Well my old title should provide that - I hope anyway. If you get to missing doing boat work, I am just a bit north of you, come on up and work on mine. :)

Realy I hope you can find a way to get things straightened out. Wonder if you make changes to the hull if it could be considered a home built?

LOL i'll keep that in mind, troy. thanks for the "offer" tho. :)
the only way to do that would be to change the hull, then REMOVE the hull id number....and i've no idea whats involved in getting a new HIN for a boat. :/

OK, so the update.....
i found the registered owner. TN boat reg office sent me a copy of the currently registered owner for that boat number, and i contacted him today. we talked for about 15 minutes (i had to get back to work), and he informed me that the boat was stolen, presumably by the mechanic he brought the boat to for a tuneup and other work. this 'mechanic' is the same one that REFUSED to give me any information on the origin of the boat or how he got it. turns out he sold it to an unsuspecting victim, who then put it in the water only once, and never got it to run.

as the registered owner has free time, we will discuss our options (me because its sitting in my shop and him as registered owner) and go from there.

at this point, i dont know what he wants to do or where we go from here.

more to come later.

Re: 1984 Baretta rebuild

That is great news you found the owner.
I hope you will be able to work something with him.
I think both of you should try to bring some type of legal action agaisnt the mechanic.
Good Luck.
Hope to see you get back to work on her.
