Re: 1982 Sylvan Bassboat project

Wait , you mean your not supposed to use 1/4 " osb for a boat deck ? I would think that and some latex paint would be fine ..:laugh:

wait... what??? I gotta paint it too? :sorrow:

I think just one at each end of cavity....the stuff does move quite alot....evenly distributed on the holes of course

I agree with Trooper.. That is how Friscoboater did it in his videos.. You might screw some 1"x2" on the 1" edge to the flase deck for a stiffener..

Re: 1982 Sylvan Bassboat project

good ideas boys! I'm not sure the 1x2 is necessary as my widest cavity I'm filling is about 12" - 14" wide and I have the cross supports already glued and screwed down. Even with 1/4" osb it's pretty darn solid when walking around on it already.

I would think with the relief holes your not going to put much pressure on the osb..

Re: 1982 Sylvan Bassboat project

ugh! ran out of foam and only 2/3 done. Gonna have to put in a USC order tomorrow if I want to have any hope of getting a deck on next weekend.

Ok, pic's and thoughts to come later...

Re: 1982 Sylvan Bassboat project

ok, here we go... bear with me I have like 20 pics to link in here..

First and foremost, I'm ecstatic with how what is done has turned out. The area under the starboard side where I was able to complete is rock solid with only the 1/4" osb over it. I can't even imagine how solid that deck will be with 1/2" ply for the deck. Wood, The outdoor temp was 35ish but the inside temp was ~65F I had a heater pointed under the hull. I reallize the foam might not expand quite as much as if it was 80F. I basically mis calculated on how much foam I would need under the deck. I only ordered the 2 gallon kit from USC last time. I figured it would get me pretty close. What I didn't realize was that there is also a carp load of wasted material. My under deck area is only about 4" deep and 18" wide that I am foaming. I figured I'd use this as a trial to see how much I'd need for the rest of the boat. I now figure I'll need another 6 gallons to finish the rest of the underdeck, floatation boxes and under the fishing deck. If you haven't watch FriscoJarret's videos on foaming his 2 boats then I highly reccomend it. I learned so much watching those before I tried this.

Ok, on to the documentation.

I first started by building a fake stringer / form to leave a drainage chanel by the center stringer. The original foam didn't fill even half of this void so I know I'm adding more floatation than it had previously. Also, by putting in the temporary fake stringer, it allowed me to create more structural support than was there before.

This is the stringer blank, fit into place to test it's fit.

Next I screwed a nailer 1x3 to the top edge in between all the cross braces. This was to help strengthen it as well as give me some surface aread to screw the deck down to it.

after that I set the stringers in place and cut some blocks to keep the pressure of the foam from moving them. Here they are test fit.

next I wrapped the fake stringer in very thin plastic I had left over from another project. I used this same thin plastic for all of this prep work.

Re: 1982 Sylvan Bassboat project

Then I put the fake stringers back into their final position. Note, I have not screwed anything into my finished fiberglass anywhere here. The plan was to use weight and re-enforcement to get the job done.

Then I covered the top (right under the deck) with plastic as well.

And screwed the temp deck down to the stringer nailer I put in earlier. Also to note. I cut the temp deck boards back so I could watch the void area for problems to crop up during the pour.

I finished screwing down the deck to the temp stringers and drilled a 2 1/2" hole every 16ish inches for pour & air holes.

Then I screwed down a 1x3 all the way around the perimeter to plug gaps and hold the excess plastic out of my way. I also filled 4 5 gallon buckets with water to assist with the weight needed to hold the deck down. Here is the deck all prepped and ready to pour.

Re: 1982 Sylvan Bassboat project

I got my prep table ready with my supplies and checked everything over one last time.

Then it was pour time! I worked about 30" at a time (1/2 quart of Part A, 1/2 quart of Part B) The cooler temps did help slow the rise time a bit but Frisco's tip he used on his current boat worked like a charm. I'd pour in the first hole, watch for the foam to rise to the deck then I'd put a 2x4 over the hole to seal out the oxygen. Watch for it to rise to the deck at the next hole and repeat. I could put a bucket on the 2x4 and it would hold it down just fine.

Here's a pic just after a pour was done. And yes, the 2x4 on top of the one bucket was for my fat arse to sit on. I would sit until the foam set up during each pour. This method worked remarkably well.

Once I finished pouring all the foam I had, I couldn't wait to pull up the temp deck and see how it turned out. This was exciting to me because those who put their final deck down before pouring the foam don't get to see just how good of a job filling all the voids the foam did. I only had one small void in the center cavity and I'm not going to sweat that one. notice how good the plastic held up here and it worked great as a release agent. It also came up very easily.

Here is with the temp stringer dislodged. Wow this turned out great!

About another hour to an hour and a half of pouring and the rest of the port side will be completed. I'll be ordering another 2 gal kit tonight and hope it arrives by Friday.

My dad asked if he can come give me a hand on the boat next Saturday. I really would like to have him help me either csm the backside of the deck or if I can get it ready Friday night then have him help me tab it in or pb it in. That is all predicated on the foam getting here first though.

Sad to see another weekend gone already but I feel I got a lot done this time and I can feel some pretty major progress happening in the next week or so.

Happy Monday folks!
