Re: 1982 Sylvan Bassboat project
ok, here we go... bear with me I have like 20 pics to link in here..
First and foremost, I'm ecstatic with how what is done has turned out. The area under the starboard side where I was able to complete is rock solid with only the 1/4" osb over it. I can't even imagine how solid that deck will be with 1/2" ply for the deck. Wood, The outdoor temp was 35ish but the inside temp was ~65F I had a heater pointed under the hull. I reallize the foam might not expand quite as much as if it was 80F. I basically mis calculated on how much foam I would need under the deck. I only ordered the 2 gallon kit from USC last time. I figured it would get me pretty close. What I didn't realize was that there is also a carp load of wasted material. My under deck area is only about 4" deep and 18" wide that I am foaming. I figured I'd use this as a trial to see how much I'd need for the rest of the boat. I now figure I'll need another 6 gallons to finish the rest of the underdeck, floatation boxes and under the fishing deck. If you haven't watch FriscoJarret's videos on foaming his 2 boats then I highly reccomend it. I learned so much watching those before I tried this.
Ok, on to the documentation.
I first started by building a fake stringer / form to leave a drainage chanel by the center stringer. The original foam didn't fill even half of this void so I know I'm adding more floatation than it had previously. Also, by putting in the temporary fake stringer, it allowed me to create more structural support than was there before.
This is the stringer blank, fit into place to test it's fit.
a closer look
Next I screwed a nailer 1x3 to the top edge in between all the cross braces. This was to help strengthen it as well as give me some surface aread to screw the deck down to it.
after that I set the stringers in place and cut some blocks to keep the pressure of the foam from moving them. Here they are test fit.
next I wrapped the fake stringer in very thin plastic I had left over from another project. I used this same thin plastic for all of this prep work.
