Re: 1982 Sylvan Bassboat project

Boat work all looks good, Michigan too :)

Though, I think, perhaps 1 shall end better then the other.

My money is on you & the Sylvan, but it shan't end well for Michigan I don't think
when I ain't bleeding UK blue, its all Cardinal red

Thanks JBC! Yeah, I saw it going south for Mich pretty early. I actually didn't have a dog in the fight but like to watch and root for the Big Ten & or Michigan teams when they're on the big stage. I bleed the Green and White of Michigan State.

Congrats to the Cards though they played an outstanding game!

How did you get the ok from the Admiral to use up all her coat hangers ..
Well if they play like they did against my Gators they should win pretty easy ..

That was easy SP, I take all my work dress shirts to the laundry and I have those thin white hangers coming out of my ears  I was doing the Admiral a favor by getting rid of them for her. It's all in how you frame the question my friend

Nice progress for the week CW..that deck turned out great!

Much Thanks Troop...

Re: 1982 Sylvan Bassboat project

wow, thanks guys! work has been kicking my arse latelyand I've had to spend whatever extra time I've had in the evenings working on making my June 1 move requirement and not updating my progress here. it was a choice between progress and updates and while I love you all I haven't seen anyone showing up at the door to help

I did just find out today the occupancy has been moved back 2 weeks due to the current owner being behind on their new home construction. Hard to say no when they made it worth our while and it gives me 2 more weeks to work on the boat before we move

So in the interest of a speedy pictoral update... here we go...

Trailer is all painted and reassembled minus the rollers, bunks & new winch.

a closer look at the 2 foot extensions bolted in. This will allow us to line up the transom with the back of the trailer and keep the hull from developing another hook

next I leveled the console part of the cap and cut out the new base pieces.

Then I cut out the outside of wall of the rod locker and pieces to build a step up to the new higher front fishing deck. I also cut out the ribs for the flotation boxes and the sides of the flotation boxes.

I cut and shaped 17 of these puppies, what a fun day that was, lol

a close up of the floation box fit. (still need to cut a top piece to cap it)

Then we created a mockup of an addition to the console to raise it up a little and give us some more room to add a radio and a couple of gauges.

I couldn't get him to make motor boat noises but this was the first attempt. (the windshield is a scavenge from the donor boat)

here is the final design we settled on. (thanks to GT1M for giving me the cardboard mock up idea!) ** note the white brackets are only there to hold the windshield in position. I plan on getting some nice chrome support bars or brackets.

Re: 1982 Sylvan Bassboat project

next up I built a jump seat to go in front of the console. Storage in the bottom

but gave the seat a twist.....

yup, I've figured out a way to make the front fishing deck even bigger when in fishing mode. When in pleasure craft mode the top will slide out then you can pivot and slide behind the jump seat for a back.. The plan is a 4inch padded seat with a 2inch padded back.

this was prototype #3 and I got no pics of the first two highly failed attempts and my wasted Saturday workin the hamster out on this design

Here is a look at the finished jump seat in the closed position with the step in place....

As of tonight the bench seat base has the outer box glued up and some of the top structure is clamped and curing.

This week I am ordering the rest of rollers and misc parts to finish the trailer. I'm also picking up the bunk boards and winch so I can wrap that up as soon as the other stuff comes in. I'm sure you all are noticing a significant lack of fiberglass on all the new builds... that because we are out of resin. I put in an order with GT1M's supplier and am just waiting for it and a color panel for gel coat to arrive...

Hope all have a quick end to the week and are able to have productive weekends coming up... We might finally hit 70f here this weekend so I can't wait to work with the garage door open for once

WOW! you may be getting your rear kicked with work, but you and your awesome assistant are certainly kicking butt on getting this puppy slapped together...
Way cool idea on the flipseat and the console extension...looking awesome...
I hate to admit it, but you Sir, are officially way ahead of me...I would venture to say you have me by at least a lap or two...;)
Glad to hear fresh supplies are on their way...
Many good thoughts your way for some nice weather, excellent boat progress and a stress free, easy going move...

Uhhmmm, ERRRM, Uhhmm, I Really like everything I see but..... Don't you just LOVE those Buts!!!!!!!! I see a LOT of 3/4 " Plywood that's gunna get glassed which adds up to a lot of weight. Have you given any consideration to that and done any calculations. A sheet of 3/4" ply weighs approx 75# and 5 gals of resin about 50#. It all adds up sooner than you think. Not trying to rain on your parade, just making you aware. You can beat me with an oar if you want to!!!!!

I'm only moving so fast because I have a deadline, lol Hey you might want to check in on Carmen, I hear she's been in the hospital all week. Supposed to get out either yesterday or today. (and I may only be 1/2 lap as you'll find out once you get going again)

good catch Wood! I have been concerned with that as well so I have traded off some weight in other areas. Plus I think some of this is an optical illusion. The jump seat fishing deck and 2 side supports are in fact 3/4 for the support. The front and back panels of the bench are 3/4. the side of the rod locker and base of the console is 1/2" and the flotation boxes are all 1/4". the support ribs in the original flotation boxes were originally 1 1/2" and I have now made them 3/4" My intent at this point is that anymore ply I add from this point forward will be either 1/2" or 1/4" Thanks for looking out for me!

Well alrighty then!!! I'm glad you took it the way it was intended. Was not raggin on ya!!!! Remember, 1/4" Plywood with a Layer of CSM and 6oz Cloth is REALLY strong and Fairly light weight. Especially for side walls. Easy to attach a 3/4" cleat where needed. Sounds like you're Thunkin On it so, Good on ya!!!!!!:D

Wood, I always try to remember the spirit of the suggestion on here regardless of who it is from. We all have our expertiece and give what we can to each other... to many times these "suggestions" start holy wars and I just am not one to go there. If I don't agree, even though this time I certainly do, I may just agree to disagree but thank whomever for the suggestion. At the end of the day this is just an expensive hobby for most all of us.

Don't ever stop bringing things up I value the additional perspective
