Re: 1982 Skeeter SS-1 Sport Fisherman Restoration...In Progress

My vinyl is about 2 hours away from me, so it should take only 4 more days to get here....lol nah I am hoping for tomorrow! Anyhow in preparation for it, I have been practicing with some scrap material, and after a lot of failed attempts I think I finally got my piping and attaching it figured out!

I went with a screen spline...in a wet environment I just thought rubber would work better than cord...I measured it and it is 3/16" (.175" Dia. if looking for the size on a bag) and think it works pretty well

I probably should have use a different color to make it more obvious, but heres the look it gave

Lets hope I can get it to look like that on vinyl!

Trust me on this one... Making vinyl piping is WAY easier than Cloth. Cloth want to Pucker and the vinyl doesn't. TIP: You can use a Household stapler to hold the edges in place. and 1 5/8" strips make perfect pieces for piping. Since I have a table saw I cut a piece of 8' Hardboard to 1 5/8" wide and it made a perfect 8' ruler to mark the vinyl for cutting on the garage floor. A 8' banquet table comes in handy too!

Cool, the vinyl guy refunded me 16 bucks on shipping so was 145 bucks for my materials...might invest that 16 into a walking foot or piping attachment for my machine lol

Vinyl got here today!!!

Bought 7 yards of green (32 oz) and 3 yards of the tan (31 oz) wanted it all 32 but the 31 just had a better tan, since I am going all tan on the cap/interior paint, I am going to offset it with more green in the seats

The colors matched pretty well, I was worried about the variations in color that different camera and computer monitors produce....the green might could have been a shade lighter but pretty good overall and think it will look great!

Re: 1982 Skeeter SS-1 Sport Fisherman Restoration...In Progress

Me too, I am waiting on needles now...thread is too thick to work with the needles I have so cant even play around with it right now....they should be here tomorrow or Saturday I hope. What is best way to wrap center console with the vinyl? I am planning to cover it with 1/2" or 1" of foam to make it softer, so gluing it won't work...unless I can glue the foam to console, then glue the vinyl to the foam....any advice?

Don't forget to cover the foam w/ plastic (WOG style wally world grocery bags:)) other then that, you'll need WOG to finish w some specifics, sorry. I think once you get the console in CSM you can use that 3M 77 heavy duty spray adhesive to stick the foam to the ply & the plastic to the foam.

yeah planned to wrap foam with 2mil plastic, full sheets, wally world bags work great I am sure, but I just don't have a stockpile of those so bought a roll of plastic. So glue foam to console, glue plastic to foam, then glue vinyl to plastic? there will be a few places I can staple but nit as many as I would like

I think you may want to get some 1/4" ply & apply foam, plastic, stretch vinyl over the edge & staple it to the back side, then fasten the panel through from inside your console. On a part that will see use, stressed w/ movement & flex of the boat, be exposed to water, have movement (opening & closing) and be an arm rest/cushion etc, you wouldn't want to rely on the plastic to foam & vinyl to plastic w/ out some staples {or other mechanical fasteners: tack tape (marine use?), hog clips (big knarly 'C' clips used to hold auto seat covers to the frame, again marine use?) or some other kind of clip} around all 4 sides, but give WOG some time to see your questions. He's done upholstery, I've only seen it done here & for custom car/truck work.

Or am I missing something. Why not glass console & paint it to match seats on either side? I don't really know how you'd wrap the beverage holders inside & out. Maybe in those areas & as a liner for the inside of the glove box & it's lid, straight 3m 77 & vinyl, no foam. Not having upholstery experience, I'm not seeing how even w/ no foam anywhere & spray adhesive the vinyl directly on the ply, how you'll hid edges w/ out metal trim to cover at least some of the staples. Or in lieu of staples in some areas.

So clearly, I'll learn something too when WOG gets here. I'll get us some moon pies & a sasparilla, and we can sit a spell under 1 of those fine looking trees ya got around here:)

Basically for the console, I'd do as suggested and cover the whole thing with 1/2" foam. Then 'plasticize' it. I'd then use Heavy craft paper, (Get it at Lowe's) and make patterns of the console and make an entire "Slip cover for it that would slip over the whole thing and staple to the under side. Hope that makes sense. If not, Call me to discuss. The arm rests, I'd make supports from 1/4" ply and cover them with the seats. I can see it in my head but kinda hard to explain, I might try and do one of my terrible drawings to try an show it, but... today IS MY WORKDAY do you won't be hearing from me again until tonite. I hope I'll have some pics of my progress. You guys have been putting me to shame with all of your work on your boats.

makes good sense wood, been really fighting with the armrests in my head, whether to integrate them directly into console, bottom cushion or the back cushions... still working that one out in my head, I don't think I want it tied to the bottom cushions though because current plan was to make the back cushions permanently bolted to the back, while leaving the base cushions loose and held with Velcro, this would allow me to store a 100' rope below the seat base, running through a hole then tied to a hook on bottom of cushion and have it for an emergency throw cushion/flotation cushion. so now it is more of a toss up between tying armrests to the console or back cushions. The back cushions I have redesigned already and it is now one continuous cushion across the back that just slips in over the console, felt this made it stronger and gave some continuity to the design, it has a dip in it like a bench eat would the 2 sides higher back and the center has a short back

Not that I disagree w/ WOG, but how do you use a slip cover and secure it in & around the cup holders & glove box lid? I'm having trouble 'seeing' that....

the slip cover would have the portion open, which would wrap the lip of glove box and be stapled inside glovebox then line the box with vinyl and glue that one to cover the staples, the cup holder I have inserts with a lip so you wont see inside the holes, the vinyl could be stapled right at edge and covered by the insert lips. once he said that I got an instant picture in my head of what he meant and had an AHA moment lol

Ok took a lunch break and saw your response. I made this drawing for your seat. I think it would work. Make frame out of 1/4" ply and even thought the pic doesnt shom em put triangle braces on the seat joints and then use alum angle to attach the arm pieces. then glue foam to it and cover it. I'd put 1/2" foam on the inside of the seat sides but I did not draw that in. You could still use the velcro to attach it and easily remove to get to the storage below Arms would still rest on console and therefore would not require strong support. Once upholstered I think it would be adequately strong enough to be removable. JMHO.

Back to the shop!!!!
