Yeah I waited 3 months before I buffed and waxed it. Just to make sure the chemical reaction cure was all done. Probably coulda dun it sooner but, it looked great without it!!!

For the sake of time available (and how much I'm prioritizing getting it on the water this fall to at least break in the motor) I'm going to put off buffing/polishing/waxing until early spring, the hull certainly needs it more so than the top cap.

Question for those that have been there before: top cap seal...what's a good order to do things?

I'm thinking, get the cap on, get it all aligned with the help of bolts, 3m 5200 between the seams, bolt it together with bolts and screws, wait for it to dry/cure, then apply the rub rail with MORE 5200 and MORE screws? Seems like a lot of screws to me...

When you took it off did the MFG use sealant?
Some boats don't use Cap Sealant. If you do, I'd prolly install the cap and use 4200 on the inside at the seam.

Thanks much, it's been a journey and learning experience for sure!

I suspect someone, at some point, "restored" this boat... or that manufacturer really really sucked...or both.

The top cap was part SOME sealant, some JB weld, and mostly nothing.

Well I'd recommend NOT using a sealant and giving her a test. IF she does leak at the rail, it's easy enuf to apply sealant after the fact

Whelp, this is an issue...

MmJ9HVI.jpg

...push the front down, front side flair out, put the side in, front pops up.

Measure never, cut a bunch....right?

Chock this one up as a win for the "cradle it before you start removing stuff" folks

I'll figure it out lol

Use some straps to pull her into shape. Get the cap on and attach with a few screws. Then pull the straps

Good idea, thanks!

I think one of the issues as well, is the inside bow area of the top cap, when I align the nose of the bow, is too far down and is flexing due to it being forced down on the deck, I think that's the biggest issue here.

The red illustrated where I think I'm going to have to cut, as in this instance the deck height is too high in relation to the floor of the top cap.

So I'm thinking cut it to the correct height, get the top aligned correctly, then just glass the cut side into the deck and get a nice epoxy radius in there and give er fresh paint...again

That is never a real problem, only a new experience.

As for using a sealant (3M 5200 or 4200), I too would forgo that initially because once you apply that, it is there forever. And while that sounds like what you may want presently, if you ever have a need to de-cap it for any reason, the headache to separate it again will certainly be a huge lesson. :noidea:

I'm gonna have to ponder on that one, I really like the idea of glassing some of the top cap in for support of the bow seating / helm (the rotary steering is quite heavy) and sealing up the joint between the hull and cap and calling it a permanent finish...but I also like the idea of being able to split the cap in the future should I need to - though I have zero intentions of ever doing any major refit on this boat again, with the exception of fixing damages should they occur.

That being said, I'm a master in learning hard lessons via mistake making, in fact it's the foundation of my career, I'd like to imagine...

Ha, it is your boat so you have to make that decision. And I also understand hard lessons learned as well. I told my two adult boys that when you make a mistake, you learn something from them. They both responded that if that is true, I should be a genius!

If your going to foam that will add adhesion of the deck, hull and gunwales.

Busy weekend, sorted out the gap!
f9hJAqH.jpg

Didn't have to make any cuts either! had to slowly, with several bolts, flex in the sides of the front of the top cap, as well as flex out the front of the hull as much as possible. Then I was able to sit on the nose of the top cap and screw it in place.

This worked great for the most part, there's a few areas about 4-6 inches long each where there's a gap about less than a quarter inch wide, not a huge deal but retrospectively I believe if I had some more patience at the time I could have got it closer...still pretty good - and I'll just fill it with some 5200.

Man, putting in the rub rail was a pain in the ass though...
