Re: 1980 Sea Nymph SS 165 Rebuild

OK, I lied. All I can hope for is that the glasser guys don't see this post:redface:

This morning I spent some time on deck prep, lots of sanding.

So then I was eyeballing that mid deck seam. And yah, my buddy Kev gave me a couple of scraps of fiberglass from his canoe project, so I got to thinking......

Then.....

I laid out a piece....

And wet it out with epoxy....

Then laid out another, wider piece...

And wet that out too, both edges of the deck got wrapped, finished product...

Yup, I used fiberglass, oh man, I think I'm gonna get it now:facepalm:

You know... I have been thinking about doing that with the deck joints in the nova and chief.
It would serve to keep water out of the cracks.

Sheeeeesh, I thought you wanted to use this boat?

You been here long enough to know that now its got glass in it the instant it gets wet it's gonna rot and be no good. :D

I thought I was observant but where is that seam?

Yah, I was kinda thinkin it would help out just a bit, eh.

Those guys needed a break from all that grinding anyway;)

Heck no. That's a forever deck. What would I fix anyway, broken noodle? The ones I bought were the flexible kind;)

Yah, I just went out to see how it was curing up and look what I found!

Ugh, sorry truck, I am a bit of a goon, I was dropped so many times as a boy:redface:

Right smack in the middle...

On the underside I overlapped/offset the foam board by about 15" when I laminated it.

Nice use of glass there... The joint with the epoxy wet out will be strong as nails...

Almost, July, better get on your horse...

My thinking is/was,

What do you do if for some reason either on the water or off yous get a hole in the hull???

Or need to get below deck for plumbing of electrical???

I think what he is trying to say...
what if you get one of these guys in your bilge!

Clearly this is the resolution.

Note how well the mount aims straight down for the bilge gremlins ;)

Tinny's got glass on the deck & glasser parts......

Is: Bastardized Product of a Cannibalized Glasser too long a boat name to fit the SN's transom......

?? My other boat used to be a glasser ?? Might fit though:D

Keep on the gas, there seems to be fewer paralysis by analysis steps this go around.....

You must be getting to be more Pro then Am.... Looks great, glass & all:cool:

Re: 1980 Sea Nymph SS 165 Rebuild

Thanks for swinging through fellas!:)

Well, no electrical/plub is sub deck so need to get in there. If I punch a hole in the hull that would be fixed from the outside. For the bilge I'll be able to get access to that behind/under the stern seating.

Then, obviously the harpoon mounted on the bow would be for the angry sea monsters;)

K, goal for the day would be to get the transom in place. That's taken me a few extra days as I figured I sand/fill/repeat/paint as long as it was out of the boat. Should save me time and headache later.

I got another coat of epoxy on that glass yesterday. I'm hoping it's cured enough to sand smooth as I'd like to coat the whole deck with the first full coat of epoxy.

Looking at my timeline for Sea Trial, not realistic now, there's just no way. I think I need to bump it back by one week. So, the week of 7/8 is now my goal to get this boat tested.

The past few days I've had a ton of non boat related stuff to do. I'm hoping that should ease just a bit for the next couple of weeks so I can spend a little more time on this SN. I really need to be thinking hull prep and paint within the next few days here;):)

Re: 1980 Sea Nymph SS 165 Rebuild

This is for my buddy bear, these are the hinges I'm using, stainless steel, more of a T shape than a Z I spose...
P1080788.jpg

I grabbed a stack of them off eBay, cheap too!

OK, went out, checked that seam, go time. It was pretty lumpy/bumpy but sanded out nice and smooth with the belt sander;)

Then got the first full coat of epoxy on the deck...
P1080789.jpg

There is a lot of deck on this boat! I went through nearly a gallon of epoxy for just this one coat...
P1080790.jpg

Then, I made one final pass with the sander over the transom so it's ready for paint when I get there, and dropped it in...

Excellent:D

I know you have a plan but I'll be watching just to see how you mount those hinges.

Looking good Jas, at the rate you're moving I'm surprised to hear other things are holding you back and even more time is to be dedicate to boat building.
