Thanks for the compliments guys. The pictures don't show the imperfections in the job, but I must say the Rusto made it easy to get good results.
WOG I hope the rains quit for you to get your painting done.

Big Hoss, that would be some kind of a comute from here 3400 mile round trip:eek:
Thanks again

Might be worth the trip, except I could only pay in American and you might lose money in the deal.:)

It has been a lot of years since our $ had extra value compared to the Greenback.

Made a little more progress this morning. Got the trailer partially assembled.

Re: 1979 Starcraft 18 SS Here we go again!!

Thanks Sprintst, I didn't go the sand blast route, wire wheel and sand paper, it is far from perfect but at least all the rust is gone.
Wouldn't know it, as I was putting the trailer back together yesterday, I was looking for the bow post. I forgot I had taken it off around the end of the shop and laid it on the ground. It had started to rain so I pulled the trailer inside to finish disassembly, well guess what didn't get sanded or painted, DUH

I also have to figure out how to convert this trailer to bunks with keel rollers from the way it was before. The wobble rollers that were on it caused lots of damage to the bow area. The first photo shows the old roller set up with the short bunks. I would like to add another keel roller on the rear cross member, and two long bunks? What does everyone think.

Bowpost classic, I do dumb stuff like that on a regular basis:rolleyes:

I'm thinking that you'll need to bolt up that rear most cross member from your original set up and then grab 6 of these guys...

A pair of 2x's and 3 keel rollers would finish it up nicely:)

Thanks Jason, I put six of those brackets in my cart just to check the shipping and for $18.00 worth of parts they want $29.00 to ship, NOT, I will have to come up with a bottom feeder method.

EZ, thanks for the photo link, that is the set up I want. In my photo I don't have the rear cross member installed yet, but will have to build mounts to hold the bunks off of it. The only problem I can see is the old wobble roller set up over hung the back of the trailer by a foot. I will have a total of four keel rollers under it.

Re: 1979 Starcraft 18 SS Here we go again!!

As I mentioned in a previous thread, I have lots of extra holes to fill on the transom. The boat had a live well that I am not putting back in, so there two large holes at the bottom of the transom, one for the pump and one for the drain.
The way I fixed them was to take aluminum sheet stock, 1/4" for the smaller of the two holes and 3/8" for the other. I chucked up a hole saw in the drill press that is 1/2" bigger in diameter than the hole to cover. Cut out two washers for each hole. I then put a 1/4"x2" bolt through the center of the washers and run a nut down to tighten it to the bolt. Then chuck the bolt in the drill press and using a file I radius the outside edge and smooth everything, then clean them up with fine sandpaper. Mark the holes in the transom 1/4" outside the edge on one side and the top or bottom then put a small center punch mark on these,( stops the marks from rubbing off with the 5200). Make sure the hole has no burs inside or out, clean with fine sandpaper on the contact area. Put a little 5200 around the head of the bolt and put it though the outside washer, then put a liberal amount on the inside of the washer, have a helper do the same to the inboard washer then intall them in the hull, sanwiching the aluminum transom skin between the two. Tighten the nut on the inside real tight keeping the out side washer lined up on the two small center punch marks. I then use permanent lock tight and double nut the inside. Should be a life time repair.
PS I also Sprayed the washers with Self etching primer prior to installation to eliminate any over spray.

Re: 1979 Starcraft 18 SS Here we go again!!

I'm back to working on the trailer. I plan to run my bunk boards on edge, because of the overhang at the back of the trailer, I think this will give them considerable more strength, as a 2X4 on the flat has none.
What are your thoughts?

Agree. As you saw in my picture, my transom falls like right on top of the rear crossmember and bunk brackets so no additional strength was needed. If you've got overhang some more support is needed.

I took a photo of your trailer over to my boat architect - he and I had an idea. Use your old roller bracket (in blue) and mount your bunk board flat (in red). He and I both like the additional surface area for the boat to rest on.

Here is the drawing he made for ya Glen...

He had that drawn up just a few hours after I gave it to him, he's great. Very impressive I know. I'll pick up the tab on his services.:)

Just thinking out loud, eh:D

Thanks EZ. That is kind of what i was thinking, I did most of the design last night while I was sleeping, but had to reconsider after seeing Jasons drawings.:D

Thanks Jason, Here is what we came up with after 6 hours of sleeping on it. It is real strong and only took me 9 hours and then i had to re-think everything after seeing your drawing.;)I just have to get rid of a little more of that ugly Yellow paint.
