Re: 1979 Starcraft 18 SS Here we go again!!

Okay, so I have some issues with the splash well. As inticated in the photos there are quite a few cracks in the aluminum. The P/O left the bad transom way to long and it really stressed the splash well. The flange that is screwed to the transom is cracked pretty bad, and the corners where the top point join have cracks in them. Here is my thoughts tell me if you think this will work. For the lower flange that screws to the transom I will put a 1"x1" aluminum angle backer on with JB weld to bond the cracks. Then when I screw it on the old flange will be sandwiched between the transom and the new 1X1 angle.

The structual cracks up top I was thinking of removing the two small backers they put in at the factory to strenghten this area and putting a 1/8 " peice of aluminum full length side to side and about 6" deep as indicated by the purple lines in the photo, to take up the stress. What are your thoughts.
Glen

Hey WonG, thanks for the complement. Rustoleum Profesional, Gray primer, Almond for the base color. Started out with the roller" NOT ", went to the HVLP, 1.7 nozzle, thinned primer about 30% dry and sand, thinned top coat 40% next will be wet sand with 3M scotch brite the a second coat of almond with Valspar hardner, then the accent color.

That splash well make a strong case for being structural the way its stressed like that. I would definately reinforce with what ever you can and mechanical fasteners or weld. Thinking about shrinking the well down for more cockpit space?

Is WOG sucking up for some reason? I almost feel like he's about to ask a big favor.:D

Nope, Not sucking up, just curious cuz I am about to shoot my GLASS hull. I'm using Pettit Easypoxy which is about the same viscosity as Rustoleum I am NOT thinning cuz my gun has a 2.5 tip. I'm HOPING I can get by with NO runs using the Hardener. I used the 1.7 tip for the Primer and had FITS with it. I finally thinned it about 30% and it went a LOT better. Stincking RAIN won't quit so I can shoot color. Maybe next week. We'll see. I just hope mine looks as good as Dozers is looking. Some of the guys on here with these TIN boats have been doing some FINE looking paint jobs lately!!!;)

Paint looks great! :D

Did you have any sort of booth set up to ventilate so you wouldn't get overspray? Just wondering how it worked out cause I had overspray everywhere:facepalm:.

MP, These splash wells are real structual, If you look in some of the earlier photos you will see that the transom had pulled away from the well. I think on this boat it was just plain run to long with a screwed transom. Someone went to the touble of putting two full length pieces of 1/4" X 2" aluminum to try and fix the problem ( ya right).
I'm really starting to think WoG is getting Aluminum fever HeHeHe.

BG, No spray booth, I can't beleive how little over spray there is with these HVLP guns. After the primer there was hardly a bit of dust on the floor and after the color I just had a little in the hair on my arms. Any time I have sprayed this type of paint before it was with a suction gun and there is over spray everywhere. I never even moved the 72 SS out of the shop when I did the primer.

I think I get what you are up to on your splashwell reinforcement there, sure sounds like a good plan to me man. I think I might go for 5200 rather than the JB in those spots for just a little more flexibility.

The aluminum angle will give you the strength while the splashwell still keeps things fitting well. Good move Glen:)

Hey, Wood loves the glasser too much to go for a metal boat.

Sorry for the hyjack Glen, but I'm very impressed with that! It also did a really nice even job from what it looks like in the pictures!

I think I may need to look for another gun for myself instead of my $15 HF one if I ever do this again. That's my problem  I had quite a bit of overspray from mine. All over my stuff around the garage... I guess I shouldn't complain for $15 :D

Thread hyjack over, Thanks!

Jas, thanks for the suggestion, is 5200 paintable?

Thanks BG, no highjack, all info trading. The spray guns I have are not high end by any means, they came in a two pack for under $60.00 at Princess Auto ( Canadian version of HF), but they do work good. I am wondering if the lack of over spray is due to using acetone for thinner? This is my first attempt with it and love how it works and sets up fast.

I found that loctite 5510 is supposed to be stronger, painable and cheaper than 3M 5200. I think I'm going with that for my transom repair.
I have an automotive type suction spray gun and will be spraying on my gravel driveway so over spray wont be a problem unless the breeze carries it toward the house.

Thanks MP, I am going to try to find the locktite product up here.
I also have a couple of suction feed automotive guns and find they are terrible for over spray, and flow control. The HVLP are way more newbie friendly and they are not expensive. I'm not trying to tell you what to do, but if you bought one of these HVLP I'm sure you would feel the same.

Yup, paintable:) If you get the fast cure version you should be good to paint the next day.

That Loctite stuff that Michael is checking out looks purdy good too.

Thanks Jas, I can't find the Loctite product in my area so I will have to go with 5200.

Made some more progress yesterday, made a quick run to the city to get supplies, boy it is easy to spent money.
Got some aluminum for the splash well repair. Stainless bolts and aluminum rivets. The transom is ready to go in, with three coats of MinWax Spar polyurethane. The aluminum doubler goes almost all the way across the splash well and is 11" deep so it should relieve all the stress on the cracks.

Well you made quick work of that transom. The reinforced splashwell looks good, that should add plenty of strength. Nice work.:)

Re: 1979 Starcraft 18 SS Here we go again!!

Thanks Jas and HA, Yea it is to bad the transom gets hidden in side the boat, all the work everyone puts into them for no one to see.
Got the hull all sanded and ready for the final coat of Rusto, mayber Friday morning. Gotta work on the Consuls and front deck support to get them ready for paint.

If it doesn't stop rainning here soon so we can get back to work, there is going to be a lot of people in trouble. Longest spring break-up I've ever seen, we are almost two months with only a week back in the patch. One thing is, it is allowing me to get lots done on next winters project. lol

Hey my outboard mechanic noticed and complimented me on mine as a proper job :D

Glen, the real question we all want to know......is how you sold the idea to your wife of buying a second boat that is exactly like your other boat but with different power? :p
