Yes sir!! @SHSU we were quite thrilled to be back out on the water and have her run so well!! First mate did some steering and had a blast. Sawed logs all the way home afterwards. He wants to fish next trip so that will be the plan, try to get him a fish! Appreciate your help through my whole restoration. Im looking forward to more fun and finishing touches now.

Starcraft On The Water!!!

Congratulations for a great 1st outing & a boat-load of smiles!!

If you haven't already, try adjusting the trim (i.e. moving the trim out will lift the bow). You'll have to do it manually on this engine. What kind of RPMs were you hitting?

Thanks @classiccat !!! It was a great time even if it was a half day due to the fuel leaks I fixed first quick. Lots of smiles is right. Need to put my starcraft decals on the sides now!

The motor has electric TNT, is that different from manually moving it out with that one big pin at the bottom? It didnt do much with the electric tnt, and it used to let me fine tune it.

I still have to hook up my tach - it never worked from the PO so I cant tell you the rpms. On WOT rpms sounded higher than last year though. Admiral said the motor sounds smoother and quieter than it did in the past after the carb work. Cant believe it made that much of a difference but it did. I have the cable and just need to set it up, and I hope it works. My kid got me sick so probably no boat work this week, we shall see. Hoping to do some electrical.

Ah perfect...just saw a few posts back that you had to use the tilt to mount it on your low-rider trailer.

I'm surprised you weren't able to pick the bow up with the tilt.

Regardless, I'd get a few runs on her esp with the tach hooked up before going nuts with props & weight redistribution.

I do love the low rider trailer lol. The water was so low that its at the end of the ramp where it drops off. Only had 5’ past the wheels of the trailer and she floated…. Truck is dry now to launch.

It surprised me too. I will go through my front locker and take inventory. I really didnt add much weight up there. I used to have the fuel tank and 1 battery in the rear, and 1 battery up front. Now I have the fuel tank in the front and 2 batteries in back, as well as my tool chest (was up front before). Anchor hasnt changed position. Thats only a 50lb difference in weight shift by my math which shouldnt be a big deal.

I did not put on my trolling plate, and always had that or a hydrofoil on the motor. I read that it makes the bow go down even more so dont see how that would help.

Feeling better so my short list for the boat this week will be install the tach, and add the much needed wheel well guards to the trailer. Was sketchy in wind launching and loading with the exposed steel there.

It only had the issue in chop which it would cut through before at WOT. Also had the issue when executing sharp turns even in the calm areas i found. I will try moving the anchor (or admiral lol) to the back, and also bring my 2 other props. Cant hurt to just test them. I have a 4 blade solas, and the original one off the stinger. The current one is a sweet turning point hustler 17p 13.25”, and its my favorite. I lose top end with the 4 blade but gain hole shot. The hustler is a close second out of the hole but fast on top. The original stinger one ive never actually run.

Man I wish Mine was that low. I have to back mine in so far I sometimes the exhaust pipe is under water because the ramp angle is to shallow....

During your hull shot and motor trimmed down, the hydrofoil lifts the back of the boat out of the water to help get you on plane. So in essence it does drive your bow down, but as the stern is lifted and the RPMs start to climb you need to trim up to level the hydrofoil. Just think of it as an airplane wing under water.

Thats how my last trailer was - exhaust would be in the water before she floated. Our ramps arent too shallow though. It was dumb luck that I scored this other one for essentially “free”. Actually is a lot harder now that the water is low but hopefully that changes. Id keep an eye out for one, its really nice getting in and out on land too. I think mine was made by road runner trailers out of texas, although they are no longer in business. I see em used a lot for jet boats though.

Im going to put the trolling plate back on. It would be nice if it helps me out of the hole. I was just worried about it pushing my bow down even further. How she was set up prior to being rebuilt is what i consider my baseline with the current prop. Will try doing little things like minor weight shifts, different props, and the trolling plate hydrofoil.

Goal tomorrow is hook up the tachometer as was suggested by classiccat. That should help me keep my rpm’s in check and add on to my testing. I know shes not far off from being right. Wondering how burning fuel weight will affect her, so should find out that soon too. Also going to add on the wheel well covers since launching/loading in wind almost sent me into them last trip. I have to line her up really straight to get on the 4 bunks right but once shes on she sits tight.

Will post an update on Saturday. Biggest goal is to catch the first mate his first fish!! Feel like Im slacking and now that the boats working, no excuses. Wish us luck!

Trolling plate or hydrofoil? Want to make sure we are talking about the same thing.

Trolling plate. I believe it is the Davis Happy Troller Trolling Plate specifically. I called it a hydrofoil, and you’re right, its not. I used to have a nice hydrofoil on it but gave that to my in-laws since I want to use this boat for fishing. I put the troll plate back on tonight and noticed my friend’s welds on my cavitation? plate are cracking again. Going to have to get those fixed again before they snap.

Wondering if the trolling plate will help bring the bow up. We will find out tomorrow. Will also test the other 2 props for fun. Ive run them before and they work fine, so nothing too new there, just want to see how they make the boat act now. I also tried hooking up my tach and im 99% sure its just broken cause its old. It doesnt even flinch and Im pretty sure I hooked it up right. Pic below of how I wired it - y’all can judge me lol. Dont know what the random connection on the top right is so let me know if Im way off! Thanks.

All rigged up for fishing tomorrow. Spent a good 5 hours fixing and testing the boat, gathering fishing gear, and then building the wheel well covers. They turned out good so Im happy. Ill snap a pic of the finished product tomorrow. All sealed up, carpeted, and then I added extra protection with strips of leftover rubber trim from the boat. Excited to fish! I even think the admiral is getting up early with us lol. Its pretty rare…. Shes not a morning person.

Well, took the boat out on the lake to fish and test this morning. No fish, and it is smokey as can be.

Tested the 4-blade prop and it actually worked better than the 3 blade hustler. Hit 30mph and the rpms sounded good at WOT. Rpms were slightly lower than the hustler. Last year the hustler worked better than the 4 blade so thats interesting. I dont think the weight balance issue has anything to do with the boat performance anymore. I believe its 100% the low compression of the motor.

She is slow getting out of the hole, and then stumbles on WOT. Was even worse today than the original splash. Going to recheck compression with a different gauge. What made me realize it was when the admiral was laying down in the bow. The boat eventually got up to WOT and rode no different than if the admiral was sitting down in the back. So her 125lbs made no difference at all in the front…. Neither did the propeller even though the 4-blade was slightly better. The trim also could be used with the 4-blade, but not the 3.

When the motor acts up, its like she doesnt have the power to push through what she should be able to do. It makes sense when getting out of the hole, and when holding a high speed plane through any sort of chop - takes a little more power and its just not there when it should be. At 80% throttle though, she holds a plane well since the boats not going as fast 25vs30, and maybe its has better torque at that rpm. I dunno. Will test the stinger prop next weekend with even more weight in the stern. Just curious if it really is the weight, but i have my doubts, hence the test. Remove the doubt, find the next solution. Most likely, rebuilding that stinger soon.

Oh yea pics…. Finished wheel well covers. The trolling plate. And the bow eye issue - it gets hung up loading and unloading on such shallow trailer…. I can launch deeper but she will float up and hit the wheel well covers.

Start at the beginning and test the tachometer feed to make sure its sending a signal.

As for the hesitation when trying to get up to speed, have you tried pumping your fuel bulb to see if it picks up RPM and punches through its stumble?

All good advice, thanks! I will test the teach feed first (not sure how to do this but will apply the googles).

No I have not tried that but I get what you’re saying. The fuel bulb is always rock hard and it seems like its getting enough fuel. I will try pumping it to see what happens. You thinking the fuel pump is weak or something? Lack of fuel would equal lack of power.

Spoke to my friend who builds the custom jet boats about the issue too. He thinks its a carb/fuel issue, not a compression or weight issue. After more hw, Im beginning to agree. Need to do the basic checks on the motor. Compression, spark gap, fuel delivery, spark plug check. My last boating opportunity of this season is next weekend. If I get lucky, she will run better. But after that its hunting season so the “restoration” will continue through next winter.

Winter plans:
Electronics and wiring
Build bow/bench seats
Trailer tires(new) and bearing maintenance
Paint touch-ups
Most important - motor work - Id like to get the stinger operational. Would be nice to solve the current ones issue too. Ill keep that work over in my other thread when the time comes.

Quick motor update - planning on getting another test run on the water Sunday. Found some issues that I fixed and she seemed to like my tinkering… hope it makes a difference sunday.

Problems I found:

Spark plugs were not gapped perfectly. Most were between .034-.038. All are now a tight .030.

Spark plugs wires we loose on cylinder #2&3. #1 was almost off which is probably why she sounded like she was missing a beat…

Primer ball on the fuel line would stay rock hard while running. I realized that when I reused old fuel lines, I accidentally used a 1/4” line instead of 5/16”. So it went from the water/fuel separator to 1/4” line, then the primer ball, then 5/16” line to the motor. Now, its been replaced with new 5/16” line and a new primer ball. Saved the old ball as a spare. Now when shes running, the primer ball softens up.

I also purged the water/fuel separator of air. I did not prefill the filter when I put it on, so I may have had air in my system. At least I can say I know I dont now.

Didnt have time for a second compression check, but I learned my first one was done partially wrong. I did not have the high idle lever up which I guess can help raise compression numbers. So I will retest soon. Also have a spark gap tester now so will do that as well with the other test. Learning a lot, dialing her in. Cant wait to finally get it right but these motors impress me with how resilient they are to issues. Knock on wood, she has never left me stranded. Reminds me of my old jeep…
