Very impressive shine. How many hours do you think you put into the polishing?

So you have about 80 hours for the shine. How much time to clean you? :D

The cleaning only took about 1/2 an hour but about 80 gallons of hot water and a quart of soap:rolleyes:

Re: 1976 Holiday 18 Mercruiser 120

A little tutorial on my method for filling all the useless holes in the deck and gunwales.
I start off by cleaning all the holes up well and using a flat piece of steel and a body hammer to make sure they are all flat. Sand the top with 220 grit and the bottom with 36 or 40 grit. This a pic of the underside of the deck and a couple of the holes, one from a previous windshield wiper.

Then I sand some patch aluminum with 36 grit on both sides before I cut out my patches. For the larger round holes I cut the patches with a hole saw. I also cut an oversize backer to hold the plug in.

Once you have all the patches cut and fit, flip the deck back over and cover all the holes to be filled with masking tape.

With a project this size a guys gotta buy the big tubes of JB. Mix up a good size batch.

After mixing up the JB coat your backer with a thick coat.

Then push and turn your patch into the backer to squeeze out excess JB.

Then put your patches and backers into the holes pressing and turning to insure a good bond, make sure there is a flat surface under the patch so you don't push the masking tape off, or the patch will sit too high, meaning lots of sanding.

Here's all the patches in place, and where there was just screw holes just force JB into the holes then a fairly thick patch of it to act as the backer.

Tomorrow I will flip the deck over remove the tape and show the results.

Hey Glen...

Been busy with the kiddos... but looking really sharp! Shine came up really nicely. I looked about the same yesterday morning.... even trying to avoid standing in front of it, I still wore a lot of it!

Great work and glad to see you are moving on to the more "fun" part and you are truly moving forward now!

Take care,

Jim

Re: 1976 Holiday 18 Mercruiser 120

Thanks Jim, it is so nice to be done with the polish.

A little more progress, tape off the patches, then a thin layer over the top on the good side and sand tomorrow.
This pic is of the hole where the fuel tank vent was in the side of the hull up in the bow.

And these two are of the hull, with all the remnants of the carpet removed, all the rivets removed, as well as the stringers. Cleaned and ready for Gluvit. When I removed the stringers I found that the front motor mount wood structure was not fastened to anything, Yikes.

Thanks BF. Got the gluvit down, and the final touch up of JB on the patches, final sand left on them then the construction can begin.
