Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

OMGosh!!! That's just what my '74 18' Chieftain looked like a 2 years ago!! May I never see the ribs again!! Actually, I'm screwing the deck down this weekend...after getting the wiring finished. I had her close to done in the spring of '09...then decided to raise the deck 2" to allow for fuel tank and batteries to be below deck... nearly chopped my hand off witha chainsaw in June '09 and it was too hot this last summer to do much!! Excuses...excuses... You've had yours for almost a year now....do you regret it? I do not... I love workin on it and when (if ever) it's done... I will love fishing from it!!!

This is what I was doing last weekend. I Did this as an extra project because I dont have a Starcraft in my driveway yet. I am so ready to be stripping paint, pounding rivets and painting. I have all the supplies just sitting here waiting for a project...

Hey Tom! I looked to find your Chieftain rebuild thread and didn't see it man, is it here somewhere? I'd love to check it out!

Dude, chainsaws and body parts is about like hot knives and butter! Careful man! Rebuilding these old boats is a whole lot easier with two hands friend!

Regret having this old rig that somebody threw away? Heck no! It's has been a really fun project, love hanging out with the kiddos while working on it, the finished product will be way cheaper than anything comparable out there, quality might even be better, all in all this project has been just great!

Now, ask my wife if she has any regrets about the "ghetto boat" you may hear something different:eek:

If nothing else, this big tin boat has been helping me through some tough life stuff, never would have guessed that.

This is what I was doing last weekend.

Well that is a big tin hull right there! I thought about grabbing one of those but it's a little long to fit in the garage, bummer. Plus I hear they are a kinda pricey.

Tell ya what Al, you are on to a big aluminum rig, shouldn't be long now;)

Back on it!

Another giant load of fire wood up to the house today and started in on the transom again.

First up I hand filed down the rough edges on the over drilled holes...
IMAG0107.jpg

Then I lightly sanded everything down so the up and coming paint has something to stick to. That was a bummer as I was sorta hoping just to leave the wood look. Ah well, no biggie...
IMAG0108.jpg

As I mentioned before I was in need of 1/4" shim of some sort to bring the transom into spec for the Merc. A super high quality guy I know handed me a 1/4" thick piece of scrap aluminum for the cost of a glass of water (tap). Awesome!:) Laid out the lines...
IMAG0109.jpg

Made some cuts (not easy)...

That was all I had time for today and it was getting pretty dark out. We'll see what I can come up with tomorrow. Cheers guys!

Nice Work! I was working on my transom tonight as well. My dad came over and helped me epoxy the two pieces together. Once my camera charges I will post pics in my thread.

Did I miss the reason why you are painting it?

You should've given that guy something better to drink than water!! Take him fishing when the boat is done at least...wow!! What's his number...there's a few things I need.. :)

Thanks buddy! Yah, with all the over drilling/filling and extra in and out of the boat it was just getting roughed up a bit. Didn't quite look as good as when I had just finished with epoxy. No prob, paint will be just fine to give it a nice clean look.

No kidding! I was originally going to just go with wood as 1/4" aluminum would have been way too expensive! That also saved me all the extra steps of prepping and epoxy too, sweet! He is a quality dude for sure:)

Happy Sunday guys!

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Got a couple of things done after church today...

Hauled my transom to the basement, toasty warm down there with the wood burning furnace!:)

Had a little trim work and fine tuning on the aluminum transom shim then I back buttered with PL...
P1030946.jpg

...flipped it over and threw some weight on it to cure...
P1030947.jpg

I also cut some hunks of that 1/4" thick aluminum as a backer plate for my transom eye bolts. Super bomber!:) Back buttered, flipped and threw some weight on.

It's a beauty of a fall day here in MI! Hope ya'll are enjoying your Sunday:D

Great work on the boat. That transom should last longer than the old one.

I used to be a pilot and aviation line service tech.We repaired a damaged Cessna 172 wing. The guy opted for a new one piece wing skin. The guys around the shop called it a speed wing.I see how it could be faster.Anyway, guess who had the skinniest arms.I held a bucking bar for hours. Now I hate doing a rivet job on anything that requires bucking.

It's a beautiful day here in AZ too! I think 80 was the high.. Love Az winters.. Ran for parts mostly today.. picked up a Blue Sea battery switch, some 16 gauge wire and other misc stuff.. West Marine had a nice sale today :) Came home and threw some white paint everywhere beneath my splashwell. That's all the boat got today.

Yah, the old one lasted 35 years with little more than a this coat of paint on one side and left for dead in a scrap yard. This one here should last at least a day or two longer than that!

Well, it didn't make it to 80 around my parts. Mid 50's and sunny, just right for me!:D

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Hey jas -

I just found this thread and have read a good portion of it, but admittedly not all of it. It's just tooooo looooooonng now so I read a few pages and then I would skip a few. I have to say I find threads like this very interesting and inspiring. Not inspiring enough to undertake a project like this, but perhaps something smaller. I would not be brave enough to tackle something like this.

BUT! I must confess that I think I have a little bit of OCD in me and one thing has just been nagging at me since somewhere around page 20 or so. I read about your dilemma with the oil pan on the engine, etc. and saw the video of it finally running. Sweet! Sounded very solid and VERY smooth. I remember there was low compression in cyl #2, so I was wondering if you ran another compression check after running it for a while?

Keep up the good work,

Wayne

Yah buddy, got some more stuff done today too - I'll post up later on that. Safe travels home man!

Hey Wayne! Thanks for stopping by man! Really sorry this thread is so fat and bloated, can't blame ya for not going the distance. But, it's kinda sorta that way for a few very calculated reasons!

-This thread has really been sort of a journal for me. I have had to look back untold number of times for reference especially for photos or what the heck I was thinking at certain stages. Without it I know I'd be lost on certain things.

-If I am slacking the guys that hang around this place know it and they give me heat, so, great accountability to keep the forward motion!

-I have never rebuilt a boat before. I have never owned anything bigger than a 14' row boat (save canoes and kayaks). I have never even touched hands on an IO before. I drove one prolly 2 times but that is it! So what am I saying? Well, if an ignoramus like me can do it so can you! Jump on in! I am trying hard to document everything so dudes who would like to undertake such an project they will have learned from my mistakes (many) and from the good stuff too (few). It's all there, the good and the bad.

-I have learned so much from the awesome info here on iboats, just hoping I can contribute some too.

So ya, on the motor...

Man was I pumped when that thing cam to life, woh baby that was awesome!:D:D I did pick up a new oil pan (cheap) so the next time I have the motor in the air I'll swap that out. My OCD won't allow me to leave the one with the JB weld in there.

I actually haven't checked the compression again since. I have read a bunch of threads where guys have seen improvements after running the motor for a while. I think I'll give er another check down the line to see how she is doing. My initial check was on a cold motor with a wore down battery. She may get better in time.

Thanks again for stopping by, hope Monday is treating you well!

Cheers All:)

Just be SURE any screws or bolts you put through or into that transom are 100% sealed. I'm sure you know that, but check and double-check. You can have a small leak that never runs through the transom, but the wood inside can stay soaked and begin to rot.. I had a small leak at one of my motor mount bolt holes.. 3M 5200 to the rescue.. :)

Yah buddy, I already emailed rot and told him that he is not to be hanging around my transom. He said "OK." I also told him that there are plenty of glassers that have been put out to pasture that he can go bother. He said "I know.;)"

Yup, 5200 all around!

Cheers!

Thanks tgp! Truth be told I am eyeballing a bunch of these sweet 16 footers floating around this place (that black beauty you have is one of em). I really need a smaller rig for the rivers and small lakes around here!

Thanks man:D
