Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Just picked up and read this entire thread , and its brilliant stuff.

Your doing a great job and look forward to the next installments and eventual launch..

Holy smokes Big Pete! You read the whole thing AND decided to post a compliment! Wouldn't have expected that. I wonder if you had a few adult beverages while you were working you way through and that's just the cocktail talking.

Either way, thanks for stopping by man! Don't hold your breath on the launch though, I am slooooooooowwwwww.

Rock on!

Yah Don, it's all good - it's safe to look now buddy.

I haven't been able to work on the rig for the past few days - way busy getting the house buttoned up for the winter, moving/stacking wood and such. I have been grabbing materials here and there that I'll know that I'll need in the not too distant future. I swung through Menards and snatched up some bags of stainless steel bolts/washers/nuts for the transom. Seeing some stainless steel for the rig was definitely a pick me up!

Well since I haven't had much progress I think I'll just post up a photo of me plotting my next move on the Islander. I hope that's ok with you guys...

You and the pups get on in there and get to fixin that boat. I find it very hard to procrastinate when I am not seeing work done by others

Funny stuff. The guys and the dogs may be revolting but from what I recall there are some good looking women down there :)

The ones that I recall had all their teeth and everything :)

Guys,

I was in Indiana yesterday and - no exageration - a guy came in with that exact look - I thought it was Joe Dirt himself - I tried to get me cellphone camera out to document but didn't have the guts.

Question for ya...Did you, or are you going to, coat the inside of the hull with anything? I have some minor corrosion (the white stuff) on mine and was wondering if I should put something on after I'm done with rivet fixing and Gluvit. Thanks.

Keep up the good work. I'm hoping to get on a roll here and make some good progress.........many fall chores eating up my time...

Well, yes and no.

The bilge area and the storage areas in my cabin will be painted (ZC, primer, paint, Rusto rattle can) but that would be just for aesthetics really. I am leaving the rest alone. I did have a little surface corrosion on my transom skin - came right off with some light sanding.

If you have just a little surface corrosion I'd clean it up well and move on. The extra steps of ZC, prime, paint sure wouldn't hurt anything but I do think they would be just extra steps for ya. If you have some pitting you could always just use a little JB Weld (or similar) to fill.

I am no pro so my comrades may have a different take on painting the inside of your hull.:)

I think I will ZC and paint my inner hull. When ya'll cleaned out your boat, did anyone find screws, hooks, sinkers, etc? How did they find their way down there? I found a lot and thats why I am going to protect the metal from direct contact with a coat of paint. Just a thought.

I found some pop rivet shanks that appeared to be steel, because they were rusty. They did stain the hull but the wire wheel took that right off.

I did find a 1/2 gallon of gin (unopened) in one of the side compartments and some old bear cans in the bilge area.
