Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

I suggest you start looking at Craigslist and ebay for new motor before going to all the work you are going through. Those motors 2.4/5 140hp where dime a dozen and lastest forever. I pics my up in Cleveland for 200 bucks off ebay. You can use a OMC/Volvo/Merc motor. They are all interchangable. Just the couplers will need to be changed, but you have the original. MY 140 in the Chieftan pushed it at 27-30mph (GPS) at full throtle. Just and Idea. I still have some parts for a 140hp in the attic. Let me know what you need.

Well, I have the 4.3 V6 so I'll prolly stay in that ball park since I have everything that will bolt up to it, ya know. I think 120/140 hp vs. 175/225 hp. is a big enough difference that I take the time to look for one. If I can find one cheap on eBay/cl AND have an engine survey done maybe I'd go that route. We'll see how this unfolds, eh!

Thanks for stopping by!

Sorry fsh, here is what I have buddy...

I was turning the motor by hand just a bit ago. I had my other hand on the oil pan while turning. I could feel it being bumped out by something right towards the front of the oil pan, definitely.

I know a few of you guys were hinting towards something smacking that oil pan, nice work!

So, that my friend, was the racket maker!

Now what do I do?

I think you said to flip er, eh! Well, looks like I may have to flip er!

Jason did you talk to your mechanic about the compression numbers? They seem reasonable to me, and should improve after running her a bit.

Folks say that the #'s should be within 10%+/- for a good motor from what I've read.

I sure hope that you find out something good about the guts of that 4.3, sooner rather than later:)

Nope, I have been playing phone tag with him for the past couple of days. I think he is up to his eyeballs in winterizing at the moment.

Yah the numbers seem pretty reasonable to me. I do hope she is a fixer!

I aint seen no compression numbers:confused:
Jason I'm still holding good thoughts on that motor. Glad to see a little glimmer of hope is still with ya. If you can raise the engine with your hoist and take it of the base then you can drain oil and remove pan while its upright. Not as easy to work on, but doable.

Sorry dude, I posted those up over on the IO side.

Check it out...

#1 155
#3 155
#5 145

#2 110
#4 130
#6 130

My thoughts are that if something is wacking the oil pan then my rod/cylinder is probably ok and this might be fixable? Beware: rookie thinking.:D

Could be something to do with the oil pump pickup tube not being installed correctly and the crank is hitting on it, definatley a thin metal sound.

I don't like the #2 cyl reading. If this motor was rebuilt and not broken in the the piston rings may not be set and showing weird readings. I was thinking maybe a connecting rod bearing. That is a cap that holds the bearing onto the crankshaft. If that is loose (not torqued down) then you get the knock, and possible low/erratic compression. Easy enough to fix;);) Tighten 2 bolts, maybe install new bearing...ta daa.:D
Takes less time than grilling chicken:p

Yah, there is no doubt that something knocking on the oil pan, I can feel it bumping out.

Yah, that #2 is kind of a bummer. Those readings were obviously taken on a cold motor, that hasn't been run in a long time, on a battery that was starting to wear down a little. Maybe they will improve? Maybe the knocking and low # are related? I can feel the pan being bumped right at the front where #2 or #1 would likely be. Fix the knock and the compression will improve? (wishful thinking I spose)

I really like to hear things like "easy enough to fix"!!! I also like grilled chicken!;)

Yah, you are right. I need to do some fishing/hunting, good reminder buddy.

Here's my penny's worth....bite the bullet, take it to a rebuilding machine shop and have it rebuilt (short block) then reassemble. that way you know what you have and no fears of other cylinders becoming affected. Your compression readings are not that great across the cylinders, especially comparing the othere to #4 and #6. (a difference of 35). The 110 is definitely shot. Your overall cost may not be that great, and then a local rebuilder will be a great way to go. I just did a completely rebuilt 305 chevy for approximatelt $2500. Yours may be less. This included rebore, (new pistons) polished crank and the whole 9 yrds. Again just a thought and a complete piece of mind if you plan to keep the tub.

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

You can get a short block with heads for 1450 with a warranty if you pick it up or 1600 shipped to your door.

I bought an engine from these guys and it was a perfect transaction and an excellent engine...

Yah, that would probably be the way I would go if I needed a rebuild job done, probably be about the same.

Here is my question though...

What kind of skills do I need to make that motor complete? Is it basically stripping the gear off of mine and bolting onto the bare one? Or, is there more specialized knowledge needed to complete such a task? Sorry, I haven't yet done the research.

He would even be TOTALLY fine with the Pre 1986 4.3 for $1,250 which includes the heads.

I would go that route. Unless the horsepower rating for the vortec's is worth the extra 200 bucks .. in that case it's money well spent.
