Happy b-day.

We got together & had a stripped glasser all tied up w/ a big birthday bow for delivery on your special day.

But the driver ran into Jen at the end of the driveway & was directed elsewhere. Anywhere else actually.....

Sorry, it was a real rotted out mess, ripe for the whole Jas treatment.

Even came w/ a DVD complete w/ special effects crushing at the dump station. Pyrotechnic cannons too :D

Hope ya got some cake & had a great family day. Been a bit, no snow days the last few weeks?

Jas I spent a little time goin over the motor swap and was wondering, you had the ugly hole welded up, then the transom and 1/4 aluminum spacer plate on transom to make up the 2-2 1/4" needed spec for the mercruiser. What i did not notice is if you made up the space of the transom skin between the hole patch and transom or did it just tighten flat when everything was bolted up? Sorry I know thats a while ago but I have been watchin Dozer on that Holiday and the Admiral is thinking its time to redo mine (ours if she is listening!!)
Thanks

Great question fog and yup, I did make up the difference with an alum spacer actually.

I took this chunk of alum I had....

Shaped it, dry fit....

Notch trowled with adhesive (I think I used 5200 or maybe PL there), stuck it in place, then wedged it in with this contraption to cure...

Thanks Jas I think you have pushed me over the edge for a repower to I/O as I was thinking of an outboard and cutting the transom down. Either way my good friend owns a Machine shop who has an excellent aluminum welder in his employ and the Admiral makes aircraft wings so I should be well set up for rivets if needed :) I will start up a thread when I can get the Holiday out of the snowbank out back, should be soon (fingers crossed).

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Finally! Finally, finally, finally, I actually got into some progress this morning.

So I drilled out 8 giant holes in my boat...

....for my new rod holders and dropped em in for a dry fit...

Pretty for a ski boat yet still fishable eh:encouragement:

Still have a lot of work yet to do on these gunwales.

Always feels odd putting holes in a boat! Rodholders look sharp!

Nice man... really sweet looking! Fish or ski... they work! Bet they'd fit drink boxes for the kiddo's perfectly!

Glad to see you were able to squeeze a little boat time in... bet she missed ya!!! :)

Holders are looking good Jason. Am kinda curious why you removed the tracks and went with the gunwale mounts?

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Hey thanks fellas! It feels good to get rolling again. The temps kept me out of the garage again this morning. But, I do believe this should be just about the last day of sub zero temps. After tomorrow I should have reasonable boat building weather. I'm really pretty well all set with the winter of 13/14.

Well Willy, few reasons on the tracks v. rod holders:

#1 I kinda wanted to save those big Berts Tracks for the 261. All my fishing gear will mostly go between the 261 and the new Sea Nymph.

#2 With the tracks off that exposed 4 giant holes in the gunwales from the PO's rod holders. I was thinking I could fill em in with Marine Tex or rod holders. Well, how about rod holders eh (along with a few extra). So, from when this Islander is complete until one/both of the others are done, she's fishable:encouragement:

#3 This Islander (now leaning hard to the ski side of a "fish & ski" boat) I decided to make it look a little more like a ski boat. So, nice stainless equipment it is.

I think that makes sense anyway, sorta:joyous:

Hey jas, rod holders are looking spiffy...
Ya know, I was kinda lookin at your dilemma with the fugly gunwale tops and was thinkin...
What about gluing down some white Formica, or the color of your choice...its thin, so you shouldn't have to deal with the transition between your aluminum trim pieces...then opening up the rod holder holes...nice clean looking finish...?
Seems like a fairly cheap, fast and easily replaceable solution to prettying up those gunwales...?
:noidea: IDK, whaddaya think?

Hey I like those rod holders with the white inserts. Do they also have caps? Holes in gunnels... yeah best to do what is easiest to cure that whoa.

Looking good Jason, just remember to put a gasket between the stainless cap of the rodholders and the alloy gunwale... and also between the fasteners and the gunwale otherwise electrolysis will kill the gunwales. :(
