Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Hey thanks for the comments fellas:joyous: I'm really glad that stuff is behind me now:thumb:

Couple of comments on the Deck Over while we are here...

I haven't used vinyl but I'd suppose that would be best for a boat for several reasons - super durable and really easy to clean would be the biggies. Kind of expensive when you include all the gear/adhesive to make it happen plus the vinyl, but awesome stuff.

Now for the alternatives, carpet and paint type stuff.

Carpet is no doubt the most comfortable stuff but keeping it clean is kind of a pain ya know. I recall last summer when I was fishing with the boys in the Sea Nymph with that nice snap in carpet. They were diving into some brownies that Jen had packed us for the day and crumbs were going all over my brand new carpet work, getting stepped on and all that. I was just about to say...

"Listen boys, if we can't keep crumbs off the carpet we won't be able to bring brownies out fishing with us any more."

Then I thought, hey wait a minute, I love brownies while I'm fishing!!!

HA! Yah, I'll take brownies over carpet! Had I not traded the Sea Nymph I would have eventually gotten rid of the carpet.

OK, so how about deck coatings? Well some of the marine stuff out there is silly $$$. I'm poor. Besides, if I'm going to spend that much I may as well go vinyl.

So how this Deck Over? (I know there are a few other brands out there that do the same thing)

I'll say this Deck Over seems to foot the bill perfectly, way better than Rustoleum with sand I had done originally. It's got great texture, super easy to apply, dries really fast, and the price is right! When I cut the top off this Islander I also pulled all the drop cloths that covered the deck. I was probably in and out of that boat a thousand times since then with dirty/wet boots. It cleaned up pretty easy and what dirt was left wasn't all that offensive as it kinda blends in with the texture ya know. The awesome advantage is that when it does get nasty enough or I get some damage on it, I can just roll another coat on. With a fresh coat she'll look like a brand new boat in there ya know. Easy enough eh!

Anyhow, just thought I'd let you guys know I'm a big fan so far.

This morning I just had to pull out the bow cushions and toss em in. Check it out...

Can I just tell you how stinking excited I am that I didn't have to make ANY modifications to these cushions as I originally built them!!!! YAH BABY!!!

I did jump in there and pretend it was sunny and 70 for a few minutes:becky:

At first I thought it was shame to cut up this fine old boat.
But now that I have warmed to the idea, and see the quality of you work, I gotta say that I like it. I think it will be the ultimate in a multi-use platform.
And it came from your back yard.

ricohman said it perfectly! I had my doubts, but you are doing a great conversion, Jas. Did you make motorboat sounds or just bask in the pretend sunshine? :D

Looking great Jas. How you going to keep the cushions fastened. Velcro, snaps or other?

Jas,

Have you looked at Seadek? I've priced doing my whole interior and swim deck, it's not too bad if you by the large sheets and do all the cutting your self. Uses PVA for adhesive and looks to be very durable and almost Brownie proof (wipe it right off). Just a thought?

Ciao,

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Hey fellas, thanks a bunch for the encouraging comments. No doubt, from the beginning, I've wanted this rig to be a nice, functional boat for the family while still staying on a very tight budget. So really appreciated:joyous:

64 - Yah, I'm pretty sure I'll just run velcro to keep those cushions in place.

hadaveha - Welcome to the Islander thread! :welcome: I see by your posts that you've been wrestling with a 470, rats:mad-new:

OK fellas no real progress to speak of. It's been pretty darn cold lately (-13 this morning) and I've been hauling wood up to the house to prep for the rest of the winter. I feel like heating my garage warm enough so I can work in there is just a waste of my firewood resources and will be for a while anyway. So, I'll need to think about stuff I can bring into the basement to work on till it gets a little warmer anyway. I'm thinking console rehab, doghouse build, and maybe get rolling on the swim platform.

I stopped by my local metal fabricator yesterday to talk through what he can come up with for the trim work for the inside/top of my gunwale. Hopefully he can bend up something nice and not too spendy ya know. If no good I'll just run with standard 1/16" angle alum.

Hey! It's 2014 and this boat will float again! Yes it will!!!!

I bought some stuff off of ebay I think the guy called it linerx it came with a gun I used no rubber bits in mine, he can tint it any color I had a 13ft whaler he tinted it the same robins egg color as the inside of the whaler, great stuff held up really well, not to bad on the wallet ether. funny story about the 470 if you dont mind me telling I bought the crestliner i wanted to get a rotten glasser right away to still the parts found one on CL 3.0 140 good shape rotten boat great price 200.00 I couldnt get away to go see and get so I rushed as I allways do and just sent my son 1 hr away with 200.00 he gets the boat looks just as it did in the pics wich there wasnt many pics. good looking boat new looking outdrive, great trailer rotten inside. at last the punchline I remove the motor cover and there it is another mercruiser 470 looks like Im stuck

The deckover looks great Jason!

Did you have to get your garage, and the Islander up to temp to apply that stuff? What temp? Or can it be applied in the cold of your garage?

Hey Brett, yah, I looked at it a while ago but it seemed really $$$ at the time. I can't remember what it would have cost me but I know I quickly moved on to another idea due to the pricing. I know for this DeckOver I'll run through 3 gallons which would be just over 100 bux.

Positive attitude on the splash there you go.

I'd love to have this ol girl floating again this spring! I think I'll aim for Sea Trial end of Aprilish and have her all wrapped up and ready to go by the time school lets out:joyous::thumb:

Yah, I think that vinyl is so durable you'd have to have a pretty heavy/sharp piece of equipment dropped to tear that stuff, eh.

another mercruiser 470

Only thing worse than a 470 ^^^^

Good question, I forgot to talk that through. At the time I rolled that on it was actually pretty warm here, like upper 30's. I was able to maintain the garage at the upper 50's lower 60's range pretty easily for a couple days. That stuff dries really fast which is nice. You can pretty much walk on it the next day.
