Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

HVLP was interesting, first time using one was on my chief....

once I figured out the mixing cup it made life easy (while at the paint store ask them how to use it, then clearly mark the section needed for your paint mix, I used green tape since I bought a roll), then used a scrap piece of drywall to test spray pattern and adjusting the regulator.

I found the lower the pressure the better, and I ran 2 in line air driers + one of the red filters on the spray gun it self.

Went very well but I did get a few runs, but that was mostly due to me not being sure how thick to allow it to go on.

I have been able to get a very good looking finish with spraycans, but in the past while it worked great as long as you kept a steady hand and focus, but I decided I wanted paint that offered more resistance to fuels and 2 stroke oil sitting on the paint.
+ I found if I leave fish blood on the front deck of my Jet it will eat the paint.

I have also been playing with the foam cutting pads used to polish surfaces, very good stuff. :)

OK, from about 10' out the new paint on the hull looks great! Then as I make my way closer I start to grit my teeth. Everybody else who has see the new paint work in person really likes it but I dunno if I can leave it.

OK, can't talk about the paint anymore.

So this morning I went for a couple more easy wins.

First I installed the fitting for my fish box water pump...

Way back in the day when I hauled this girl home she came with this cool little light on the stern deck. I'm not sure what it's for, maybe lighting up the swim platform or something fun like that?

I really wanted to keep it but it was trashed. I did end up finding an exact copy on eBay though, installed that this morning too...

Cool light! Whose livewell pump did you go with? Trying to decide myself. Was there any reason behind who you chose? Thanks for any info. I piggybacked on your bilge so thought maybe I would do the same on livewell, if you don't mind.

Jas, those little stern lights are pretty cool looking and have the same style on the Chief. That little light is required. It goes along with our masthead light which is like a 3/4 pie shining white light from the sides and forward and the stern light is the other 1/4 of the pie that light the area behind the boat, thus making the white light visible a total of 360 degrees. Hmm, that small of a light, in that wide of a flat spot (which was bigger before the gunwale trim back), I can't imagine what it's for..... General astern lighting, or light to aid backing into a slip? New 1 looks good though.

Jas how do those screened fish filters attach anyway? I've seen them in online stores and thought about getting some to keep crud out of the pick up and fish from nosing into the outlet which makes for an over flowing livewell. I just didn't see how they attach to the thru the hull fittings. Like my one fishing buddy who will catch little blue gills and keep them in his rear well and when one plugs the outlet hole he hollers at me 15 feet away "hey you got a problem back here" as the water rushes out over his feet. A couple of those would solve the problem and I wouldn't have to go back, open the well and pull his dink out of the hole to keep my boat from sinking.

I just may have to borrow that little stern light idea too, way cool!

AH! Works together with the mast head light, perfect sense!

Well, I was pretty sure that I was going to skip putting back that mast head light - I have a super tall anchor light that's easily taller than my cabin will be.

Yah, maybe I'll just call it a docking light or something like that.

Jas how do those screened fish filters attach anyway?

You just install the fitting itself (5200 and a plastic bolt/nut) then the screen simply screws onto the end of the fitting. Easy piece of gear to install anyhow.

good to see you can find these things on ebay :)

Just about anything a man could want over on eBay:thumb:

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

I can tell you are having a hard time moving past the paint job.

Personally, I think it looks great, but if its going to bother you, grab a cup of joe and let's talk>

Little secret: I did a coat of roll and roll on my boat and even though I used gloss/hardener, I really didn't have that pop/shine I wanted. So, I let it dry, did a high grit sanding for intermediate coats, and then cleaned her up... Then, I did a spray bomb coat to see if I would like it better... I royally sucked at it... I hated it... It was all splotchy and not nearly as uniform/pretty as the roll and roll (plus, there were a couple of runs). So, I buffed out that coat with some sanding, then washed with mineral spirits and acetone and finished her up with two coats of roll and roll...

So, long story short, I am trying to get you to try the roll and roll method. Just sand out those sags and then do a less agressive sanding on the rest of it and then do a final roll and roll coat... (maybe two coats). It will take you about 30-45 minutes per coat - max. Plus, you will have some hardener in your paint, which give you a little extra pop of shine and durability.

Drink the cool-aid, man... drink it.

Yah, those runs are bothering me. A few runs are fine, shows I'm a human being and an average painter. But, too many runs speak to my work/quality ethic and that's what's bugging me ya know.

Drink the cool-aid, man... drink it.

MMmmmmmmmm, kool aid, love it:cheerful:

I know what Jas is going to be doing for the next little while, once you get to the point where you can't look in the garage with the boat in it with out seeing a run???? That's a bummer buddy, you know you won't be happy till you fix it.

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Yah, this morning I decided that I'll be headed down the paint redo road. I can't complain too much though. I know my glasser guy buddies spend half their life grinding/sanding. Especially the fellas who run gelcoat.

I figure it'll take me a couple of mornings to sand it down, one morning to tape/tarp it off and one morning to shoot again. So, 4 extra work sessions I suppose. But, I won't be doing it again for many many years. So, it's all good.

Hey, I bolted on some more gear this morning!

Installed a pair of stainless grab handles to the cabin...

The bolt up was perfectly lined up with these ribs underneath, bonus!

I stuck those little black caps on there to prevent bloodshed on my nice white upholstery:thumb:

Sanding sucks especially when it's fixing something you don't like, I know all about that. Rollers caused me nothing but grief with sagging paint and flashing namptha. Good lighting is the key to spraying anything. I've had good luck using spray cans and HVLP. I actually think it's fun painting with either.

I'm liking more of your Islander bling.

Where'd you source those handles? Marine supply somewhere, or something designed for the home?

I like the handles, cool the way they lined up with the ribs (by design I'm sure).

Hey I was wondering if you could elaborate on your plans for the Mirro Craft? I might be having a slight case of MBS and I think having a small throw and go boat like this would be sweet. Its been more than 90 days on that thread, but I was just curious.
