Great video Jason, good explaination of the structure and how you put it all together, but it sounded like you were trying to make the Islander into a glass boat to make it more solid. I hope them glass guys don't pick up on that.;):faint2:

Add: I forgot to mention that the side panels are also fastened to that midships bulkhead as well. Plus, all of that alum structure for the cabin cushions is fastened to that midships bulkhead. Just extra strength/rigidity ya know.

Clairification: I'm pretty sure I said that glassers are garbage and ought to be totally banned from the planet earth. Or something like that...

Nice video... So, it looks like the knee bone is connected to the hip bone, and so on.... (nice and strong)...

Yeah, I too discovered that PL (while strong and useful) is a disaster cosmetically (looks like dried kid snot and boogers once it does its bubbling/cure thing)...

Nice work so far!

And don't be so hard on fiberglass boats.

I get the best parts from them ;)

and the guy at my dump smiles when I drop one off for him to run over with his big monster truck crusher thing :watermelon:

I get good Karma points right there!

Yah, man, I had it all smooth, looking pretty, next day, lump city. Rats! Bah, we'll get it fixed:joyous:

Yah, your are right, a total ban would be a bit harsh wouldn't it:eyebrows:

Got on some organizing this morning. I'd like to run through the maint on my Evinrude kicker over the winter and really wanted to work fireside in my basement if I could. So, I snatched up this old TV stand that was tossed out, bolted on a board, the absolute perfect engine stand! Shelves for all my tools, has a power strip mounted right to it, and rolls around super easy, love it!!

Jason, are you building an icebreaker? Looks strong as can be. Nice re-purpose on the motor stand/cart. If you pick up the battery does it want to flip on you?

Knowing Jason... the battery (likely a new deep cycle marine battery) came with the cart!:victorious:

I didn't think when I posted that. And the cart was a freebie most likely.

Thanks IM! Yah, I'd like to minimize this ol cans rattles as best as possible, eh!

Yah buddy, that's what I'm after (minus all that rot though:D).

Nice re-purpose on the motor stand/cart. If you pick up the battery does it want to flip on you?

Thanks GA! Yah, before I set the motor on I hung my chunky 185ish on there and bounced with no flippin over, even without the batt on there. I'm really excited about that new engine stand! Now, that's pretty dorky I know:embarassed:

I wonder how long it took him to figure out what side to put the battery on.......

HAHAHAHAHA

Ohhh, you just thought that was soooooooo funny didn't you, sooooooo clever huh?

(Actually, that was kinda funny:lol:)

--------------------------------------------------------

OK, two items to post:

#1 I'm super excited, grabbed a brand new FF/GPS with DI over the weekend for about 1/2 off, yah baby!!! I've been hunting for one on the cheap for months. It's en route and should be to me by the end of the week, saaaawwwweeeet!

#2 So this morning I was sitting on the newly installed starboard side seat box. Thinking. Thinking, thinking, thinking.... Coffee. What was I thinking? Well, I was kinda thinking what it might be like to haul this Islander down on our Easter Break Trip to Hilton Head Island rather than the Sea Nymph. Hmmmmmmmmmm........

So here's the Island...
HHI_zps574dfbad.gif

On the East side would be rivers/channels/cuts/flats and that sort. Certainly the SN would be well suited for getting into that tight/shallow stuff.

On the West side of the Island, the ocean. Just a short distance off shore are a number of reefs and wrecks. To take the SN out there it would have to be pretty much flat glass calm for me to even try. On the other hand, the Islander would be quite comfortable out there.

I kinda think the "over the side" "family fun" sort of fishing might be a little better over those reefs/wrecks vs. well placed casting on the flats.

I dunno, just kinda thinking, hmmmmmm......

First: As a school counselor, I anticipate you might have a crazy busy and challenging week ahead of you. Sending good thoughts your way... I know you will be a source of wisdom and encouragement as questions come up, etc... What a tragedy... Very sad.

Second: You can't go wrong on boat choice... Hauling the big girl might burn slightly more gas on the way down, but it could have some upside once you get it there... The kids could hide away in the cuddy if its too hot/cold or sunny, you could venture off shore a bit, etc.... (but the marsh is very shallow and swings with the tides, so you would be somewhat limited on the west side..)..

If you are staying on the marsh side and have a pier, its worth the small investment to pick up a crab trab or two... the sell 'em everywhere.. The kids love pulling up the traps and seeing if "old toby" (i.e. big daddy) has made his way in there to take the bait...

You may or may not already know this, but to get crisp straight caulk lines use the blue Painters masking tape and tape of the sides and bottom to the surface then use a Small bead of caulk and a popsicle stick dipped in Mineral Spirits and held @ a 45? angle to smooth and form the concave joint. A little caulk goes a long way. Remove the tape before the caulk sets up and your lines will be perfect with NO Cleanup required.

I echo what PM said. My wife is a K-Garden teacher and has been rattled pretty good. I'm always thankful for people like you Jas' who are put in positions for a reason....

The Islander at Hilton Head! Now were talkin! Sounds... well... like a challange! :)

+2 On the sentiments echoed.... my family, cousins', uncle are all teachers... hit everyone pretty hard hear across the border. My wife runs a mid sized tutoring company with many dozens of clients and tutors and has talked non-stop with clients and teachers alike.

Sometimes the world is a cruel place to live in. Hug your kids. Be thankful they are with you.

Peace coming to you all from north of the border.

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Hi Jas,

This is my first post on iboats. I discovered this site a few weeks ago and I have dissapeared from all other interactions with the outside world... well not entirely but I have found I have had my nose pointed at a computer screen a lot lately mesmerised by your cunning craftsmanship. I have to admit I have read all three of your rebuild threads. Yep! I read the whole of both the Starcraft threads as well as the Sea Nymph thread .

I found them when I was looking for information, as I want to renew a boat myself. I say renew as it's not in too bad condition, just needs a couple things revived a little... you know, new engine, transome... that sort of stuff. Anyway, I will put up a thread when I start. Unlike you I do not have the accountability to do a hundred (Ahem!!) more than one project at a time and at the moment I'm rennovating but as soon as that's done, I'll be cutting away :)

I just wanted to say thanks for the inspiration and motivation you've given me. You are an impressive man.

First off I just wanna plus 1 PMC & In Motion's comments.

As for the trip either of your boats would be a good choice in HH. Now the Islander does have a great advantage in it's size really all depends on what you wanna do. BTW this may just be my personal bias but if you run up the Savannah river.....practice catch and release.

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Hey fellas, thanks for the props. I have a fair number of thoughts on the recent events, I'll be keeping them off the forum though. What I will say is the King is still on the Throne, I love my offspring so much, and my heart is wrecked for those families in Newtown.

-----------------------------------

Welcome man, glad you are here!! Welcome to iboats!!!:welcome:

Dood, you read all three, you are crazy!!!

------------------------------------

On the boat options for our HHI trip:

I do believe if I had my way, I now think I'd rather take this Islander. You fellas make some good points for sure. I do see the disadvantage in fuel burn on the way down, but that shouldn't be too bad. There's also the disadvantage of not being able to get into the skinny water. But, I do think the advantages of "family style fishing", safety margin with the bigger rig, and having the cabin to get out of the weather sort of stuff may outweigh.

So, here's the deal...

I was thinking that the finish line would be sometime during the summer of 13. Well, that's bumped up big time now!

The GOAL for the Islander is now 3/28/2013

I say goal because I have no interest in rushing, cutting corners or killing myself on this project. I'll need to "just keep the blades turning" and work efficiently. If I can pull it off, sweet. If not, hauling the SN down instead is certainly cool too.

So, game on:peace:

------------------------------------------

That said, progress accountability...

This morning I drank coffee and got the ply pieces for the port side seat box cut out. I didn't bother with photos, it's just chunks of ply:rolleyes: Hoping for glue up tomorrow.

Hey Jas,
I think you better take the bigger boat and especially the new GPS. You're likely to need it, or more coffee, since on my maps the ocean is on the east side and the flats on the west. - Grandad :D
