Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

All right, I am officially back on the Islander project!

For the past few days I have been cleaning and organizing the two boats and garage, man it's taking a while getting everything where it should be.

I've also done some sitting, staring, thinking, so game on:joyous:

Here's where I left off back in May (wrecking stuff)...

http://forums.iboats.com/boat-resto...-islander-rebuild-369247-204.html#post3781174

I decided to just scrap and start over on that port side seat box. I hate re doing stuff, rats. Ah well, when you have the intelligence of a below average squirrel, doing stuff two and three times comes with the territory:rolleyes:

So here's where I'm at as of this morning...

(Uh, that photo seems foggy, sorry bout that)

You can see that I have installed some fat chunks of alum angle all around the cooler (SS Screws and 5200) to mount the box to.

I was originally going to just have this be a fish box with a drain only. After seeing how much fun the boys have watching fish swim around in the SN, I've decided that I must install a fresh water pump for that cooler. Just gotta do it, shouldn't be that much extra work for me.

That Starboard box needs a final sanding and will be just about ready for install.

Hey man... Glad to see you are back at it!!

Are you thinking of having a clear plexi glass top to it --- sorta aquarium like??? :) OR are you going al-fresco so the kids can reach in and touch the fish? --- OR a Jas special....???

I really like the little guy who bites that dead horse and kinda shakes it's like a dog, funny!

IM, I'll just have a lid on there. The cooler is big enough for Ethan to climb in and swim around with our catch if the day calls for it's, ha!

Progress accountability - whole bunch of sanding on the starboard side box this morning.

Rock on fellas!

Amazing!

3 years and 167 pages and you're only this far... I guess talking about working on a boat doesn't actually work as well as working on the boat?

I know you've been busy with other boats, and honing your skills on them before completing this one was a good idea. It should be very nice when you're finished.

Since you don't mind doing things 2 or 3 times I suggest you remove everything from the deck up and the decking and re-install that decking correctly with exposed fasteners so it can be removed easily in the future for below deck repairs and/or modifications... it's still not too late. It's not going to be pretty if you find out there's a below deck "uh-oh" after you've finished the boat and have to get below deck again.

This is just a suggestion, but I think it's one that should be given some consideration.

If anything needs fixing under your deck Jason - just wave your hand over it and say "these aren't the droids you're looking for".

That's cool, I understand completely and figured it wouldn't do any good to say anything about it anyway.

I hope you never have to find out about the concealed deck fastener syndrome... but these are boats we're talking about.

Like I said earlier, I'm sure your boat will be real nice when you get finished with it.

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Mornin iboats doods!

Hey, on my deck, removable vs. "for keeps" - after I get the seat boxes installed I'll shoot a little video with my thoughts on the how and why I built it the way I did. I'm not suggesting my way is "the way" nor the "best way". It's just the way I built it, eh:joyous:

--------------------------------------

OK, so this morning...

I am out of fat alum angle, out of plywood, out of 5200 and out of epoxy - which means I'm kinda at a stoppage with my seat boxes till I make some purchases. And, I am way tight on boat build budget too. From here till the end of the project I'll need to be extra creative in my project financing and figure out other parts of the build if I don't have the $/materials to complete the task at hand.

Knowhattamean:watermelon:

Anyhow...

I've been thinking about my cabin walls (for a long time actually). I do believe I have narrowed that part of the project down to two options.

#1 - I could use sealed up plywood and cover with white vinyl to match my seats/cabin cushions. I could even lay down that real thin kind of padding and then wrap the vinyl over that. I think this would be a nice route to go. But maybe too much vinyl going on? And, I'm not so sure what my console material might be to match nicely.

OR...

#2 - As I've talked about earlier use this fir I have on hand. You guys who have been following the SN project know I had issues with it splitting on me. I know I can figure ways to use it and not have it split so no sweat there.

Now check this out:
P1090763.jpg

That's one of the dash pieces from the SN that I didn't end up using. Honestly, I'm not a fan of how "red" it looks with the Spar Varnish so I ran a little test this morning. If you look close you can see the left side is more redish than the right. I sanded down the right side and used Spar Ureathane for comparison. I prefer the more natural color to the redish, eh? It's not a huge difference in the photo there but in person it's noteworthy.

Anyway, two very different routes vinyl vs. wood. Surely, the character of the Islander would be quite different depending on material too. I'm leaning wood with the Spar Urethane but I'm always happy to hear your thoughts too fellas!

Yah, I know, just yammerin on about boat building stuff. It's winter:smow:

OH what to do, the wood will need maintainance, the vinyl will not and it will be soft for the Kiddos.

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

I think you should fill the cabin with those giant rubber ping pong balls, like the ones from the bounce houses for kids...that way the youngsters will have a cool place to play and it should add a considerable amount of floatation...Huh!? Whaddaya Think, Huh?

Just kidding, since this is more of The Family boat, why not bring in the most important people on the Planet into this decision making process...let them decide how they would like the cabin to look/function...?...and, NO, I don't mean the Iboats gang...

Whatever you do, I know it is going to come out awesome...Have Fun!

Happy Friday, broham...:D

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

What about using both. Vinyl for the main covering and the wood for some trim or accent. Not sure but you may find that even if you sand the wood down over time it is gonna darken and regain that red patina anyway. If it is used as trim or accent maybe it wouldn't bother you as much or you could remove, re sand and re install those pieces. I know that with cedar we used inside our hunting shack we are seeing a change in the color after two years. Whatever you decide I am sure it will look good. Again, heck of a good read you have going with both boat projects. Thanks for sharing. The sarcasm and heartfelt well wishes that pour out of the "helpers" is truly amazing. Glad I found iboats and these threads to follow.

Ahhh man... I'm a sucker for the wood... but Dozer's got a point there... course I spent 2 hrs this fall scrubbing mold off of my FIL's vinyl and no minutes on mine with wood.... so ya know... sounds like that "bottom-feeder field mouse named Gerald" is knockin' around in that old noggin of your's sayin "how can I get this done for el cheapo and still have it look decent"!

I say use what ya gots... but that's only my 1 cent worth of Canuk money talkin there!

Just my .02... The all wood cuddy interior might look like like one of those paneled knotty pine living rooms from the 70s...
