Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

I'm pretty sure that the stripes are painted on your rig...mine are on my '79.

I have to agree that if you could squeeze a stainless rail on each side and still have room to get in the rig easily that would look sweet and be functional.

Plenty of room for downriggers and rod holders on there too:D

I found this photo of an '86 Islander and the way you cut it looks very similar. Did you know that you were simply following the natural course of Starcraft design evolution?

Thanks Huron! Yah, when I started scraping away at those stripes it sure seemed to be painted to me so I stopped right away. I'll attempt to sand them smooth in order to have things blend in with the hull paint rather than telescope through.

Nope, I didn't really realize it until I actually decided what a pain they were to deal with. Then, as I was studying the different design changes they made over the years it got me thinking. I'm wondering if there were complaints from the late 60's through the early 80's about the design that Starcraft decided to change things up. Maybe, maybe not.

Anyway, I am pretty excited to see how these turn out.:)

By the way...

Can someone confirm that the stripes along the sides of my boat - paint, right? Not a decal, right? Thanks!

Mine were paint. I did have some numbering decals on that came off easy. The original paint on mine really stuck. The problem was the splash and dash paint that the guy did over it so I just stripped the whole thing with a water deactivating paint stripper.

Thanks Sprint!

I am hoping that I don't have to go down to bare hull on this, but, we'll see. There is a bit of bare aluminum here and there at this point. I did just realize last night that the previous owner put a coat of paint on the transom. I don't know how I missed that till now!

Considering how my factory paint stuck I'd say you's be safe with a sanding and going over top with the product of your choice.

My top layer came off like it was house paint. The guy obviously didn't prep or prime and it was flaking off everywhere.

I agree. Just scuff up the factory paint, hit any bare areas with a light dusting of ZC primer. Then paint it.

Yup, that is what I am hoping for! Overall the paint is in pretty good shape (at least to serve as a base anyway) and the transom is the only area where the previous owner added a layer of paint - so I am hoping that the painting process shouldn't be as rough as some of you fellas have experienced.

So last night I sort of picked away at this foam that is in between the bow deck and stringer/supports...

which was sort of a pain...

I tried a utility knife, drywall knife, needle nose pliers and the good old fashioned pointer finger/thumb method. It was tedious but using the fingers was as go as it gets. The other methods didn't work as that foam was stapled in place so knives would just get stopped up by the staples.

At one point I thought I'd get smart and pulled out the Bernz O' Matic. Well it burned it up all right, but ended up turning into this gluey, sticky terrible mess every where. That was sure dumb!

Welcome to the "other club." :) Leaving mine in place but it is only under the stringers.

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Hey, fellas...

Look what I found!

I ended up having a snow day on Friday so I decided to go down and check it out. She was located at a scrap yard and the asking price was $700. The owner was a heck of a nice guy and we chewed the fat for a bit, haggled some, and I almost walked away from the deal. Well, I ended up driving away with it for $450.

Overall the hull seems to be in great shape. It's pretty dirty from the slushy/dirty/wet roads on Friday. I did find one sort of deep gouge that might need some attention.

I'm realy sorry I missed the other boat he had a month ago. You must have words of gold to snag this for 450

So I did a little mock up of how the gunwale might look at the helm. Check it out, eh!

Option #1...

Option #5...

I'm going to stew on this for a bit yet but I think I might be a bit partial to #2 and #3. How about you fellas?

Man it's a beautiful day today in the middle of Michigan!:D

I like 1 or 2 since they flow with the lines of the boat pretty well. Also help keep water from splashing inside the hull(the actual function of the piece).

BTW quit enjoying the weather so much and get back to work(just kidding):D

How about #5, that would be to reproduce the angular line of the cuddy window just ahead of the cut aluminum.

If not then 3, it carries the line of the wind screen above.

Per the high quality suggestion from the man who enjoys his bananas I have edited and added an option #5. Thanks man!

Hey buddy, I am working! I am constructing a tree fort on one side of the yard for the offspring and the Islander is on the other side of the yard - the Mac just happens to be sitting on the patio table in between the two projects! Whats your excuse for slacking here on iboats when it's the perfect day to be hammering out an SS resto, eh!!

Cheers Man!

OK I want to change my vote to #5, as far as me posting instead of working on the SS, I don't know what you're talking about:p

I'm actually going to pull the boat out of the garage today and give it some fresh air and a washdown before the gluvit.

Tree fort sounds like a fun project, I have one up north I'm working on with my oldest nephew whenever we are at the cottage.:)

I like #5 as well as the winshield follows the lines of the boat...

#5. Follows windshield line and gives more fish'in room! :) (i'm just on a break from working outside - thought I'd make sure everybody else was work'in too!)
