Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild
Thanks dj! Yah, I think I'll hold out for the long shaft since I have no real cash anyway, bummer.
It won't be long now you Salmon Slayer!!!
Yah right. You know how some guys say "A bad day fishing is still better than the best day at work!" Yah, I have a lot of bad days fishing. I still have a blast though!

OK guys, I am attempting to get my hands on the Merc next week. To do that I have a fair amount of hull prep that needs to happen first. So yesterday I tackled the aluminum trim.
I had a whole variety of stuff I tried but I think what ended up working best was starting with 120 grit on the belt sander (to work through the anodizing) then 220, 320, 400 each by hand. I finished with these 3M Metal Sanding Pad deals...
000 Steel Wool works well too but I didn't hardly use it for fear that pieces will fall into the alum and start reacting.
It was terribly tedious and took forever but I am happy with the results. I was fully intending on hitting everything with polishing compound (I already bought a bunch of that stuff) but I'm not so sure now. They have kind of a nice satin look to them that I really kind of like. Plus they match my Berts Tracks nicely. Check it out...
I think I may like that look better than like a shiny chrome sorta look, ya know.
Not too shabby. They used to look like a dog had been gnawing on them like a bone.
I still have about 20 more feet to work up. Then I'll go back and do one final finish pass on everything.
I can see that they are very vulnerable now though. Water marks and fingerprints instantly show up. So, here is what I'll do...
By the way, here is how one of those joints look with JB Weld sanded down...
I know, not beautiful. But, I'm cool with it. That is about as good as it's going to get I think.
Cheers
