Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Hi Guys:

I'm a big fan of "Rust-Oleum" AKA "Tremclad" in Canada. It ticks all the boxes with me, that is: cheap and durable, forgiving and easy to apply and did I already say cheap?

I was just thinking that if its a gloss it might reflect the sun and burn your legs while your out fishing on those blue bird day's. A flat might not do that but I dont know. My boat has vinyl and carpet on the interior. Maybe someone out there that has a painted interior could speak up with that info. Maybe I'm just over thinking it.

Hey kilowatts, you can buy all the rusto professional, you want in Canada through Acklands Granger and Oil Field supply store stores.

Excellent list KW! Couldn't agree more! One thing I'd add...

When (not if) I get a big ol scratch I can stop at any one of the four lumber yards on my direct route home from work, and grab a rattle can of Rusto for touch up. Less than 5 bux. No waiting for exotic quarts of paint to arrive from far away lands at $55 plus $15 to ship.

Rustoleum is just my style;)

Ooooooo, to be fishing the big lake on a blue bird day. Can't wait!!!!:D:D

Well, the side panels may be a little shiny but I don't think I'll sweat that too much. The deck has the sand texture laid in so that will break up the reflection.

Thanks for keeping keeping an eye on me GA!:)

Hey no big deal. My 6 year old daughter has been eating apples out of the side of her mouth for months now. You do the same and you won't go hungry;) (Her two front teeth are finally just now coming in)

Hey buddy, that Merc is calling! I don't think I am too far off! Maybe a couple/three weeks or so and I can pull the canvas of er:D

The slow march continues, morning progress...

I finished stuffing what flotation I could under the deck, just in front of the bilge area...

You can see the canoe thwart support under there, fuel lines and fish box drain line off to the right. I think I'll put some sort of simple bulkhead there to keep it all where it's supposed to be.

I also can't seem to leave well enough alone. I thought I could do a little better job on my side panels so I laid down another coat of Rustoleum...

Wouldn't be backyard boat building without a bug in my work...
P1050868.jpg

Ah well, no biggie. Those panels will get light sanding, install, and another coat or two.

I also got going on the pieces to install those panels. I took this heavy aluminum angle...
P1050870.jpg

Schmeered PL all along the mating surface to keep all the water out...
P1050872.jpg

Installed on deck with stainless steel...
P1050874.jpg

I had to pull all that pink foam out of the way to screw down the angle. That will go back in before the panel install.

All the time I had time for today.

Have a great weekend fellas!

Panels look great, Jas! Still not sure if I'm going to do vinyl, and I think with my timeline I may just go with the darker machine gray. What color were you going to go with for your deck?

Thanks bro! Deck, seat boxes and side panels will be Light Machine Gray - transom, bilge and underside of of gunwales shelf area will be Dark Machine Gray. I am thinking the two different gray tones will break things up a little and give a nice contrast ya know.:)

Everything looking good. Let me know how that upholstery place works out. My father is about 20 miles east of Bay City and if he ever needs something done to his Sea Nymph....nice to have a reputable place to go to. We both agree with the list, but he has to definitely do the cheap part being retired on a fixed income.... Not sure if this was covered before, but are those noodles mold/mildew resistant? If unsure, may want to take the ones that you just put under the deck that are U shape and place them the other way (n) so that water can't get trapped in it.

Thanks irishmedic! Will do, I'll be sure to post up some photos of his work. He said maybe about Tuesday/Wednesday of next week they might be ready. That is lightning fast compared to many other places I cheked into for work. We'll see how all that goes eh!

That's a good point IM, I didn't think of it while I was stuffing them in there. Easy fix, thanks for looking out for me!:)

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Hey guys!

This morning I painted up my bilge, transom and gunwale underside. Check it out...

I just set my side panels in there to see what it looks like.

So, tell me what you think? I'm not so sure about the two different tones of gray (Rustoleum Light Machine and Dark Machine Gray). The two different grays seem to clash to me. My bride says not so much (which was weird). The third photo is prolly the best side by side color comparison.

I'll spray another couple of coats of paint to the underside of the gunwale but I am debating if I should change over to light machine gray or maybe even white?? Hmmmmmmmmm.....

Happy to hear your thoughts!

My seats will be all white so I have all sorts of flexibility there.

I was originally thinking the two different grays would be a nice contrast. Now I'm not so sure about that.

If I changed it to the lighter gray that would prolly look aok as the rest of the panels/deck will be that color.

White would look really nice too I think. I'll have a cockpit combing pad right over it wrapped in white vinyl.

Nah man! I love the glasser guys! I am always here to "help" them with the best way to deal with their stringer/deck/transom rot issues. My "advise" is quite consistent actually:D

Hey I just noticed - you can see a reflection in those panels there. That's kinda cool. Not too shabby considering I only went to 220 sandpaper and a regular paint brush:)

I'd probably be inclined to go with white paint,........................But I would also more than likely try to hang a big tiller on it,...................lmao,........

I vote for light grey shelves, to match the rest.

Shadows will always offer some contrast if that's what you are after.:)

White shelves + bloody pliers and lures from all the salmon//walleye caught by Jason = mess

That bilge looks awfully clean and nice. I feel like I should paint mine now.

What's that huge area set aside for in the stern???

Whatever it is seems like a huge waste of space:eek:...:D

You'd go with a tiller? Really? Huh, wish I would have know that earlier:rolleyes:

Yeah, you got a great Paint Job on those Panels.

Agreed, painted em up Light Machine Gray this morning. I do like that darker color but it just doesn't look quite right next to the light gray.

Nah, that's where he will be stowing the "black boat anchor".....:D;)

Wait a minute...

What just happened there????

I think I just walked into an unscheduled IO vs. OB trash talking session!

Punks!

Here, my Merc wants to say something to you guys....
