Re: 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Those side panels look pretty good, nice work there:)

I like the idea of a vertical hatch door for those boxes. Here's a photo of a 24' Seaswirl, with a very similar layout. The livewell/baitwell is in the left foreground on that boat.

The advantage of vertical doors is that they are bigger usually(to fit spotlights, downrigger weights, planer boards, etc) and they don't let in as much water in my opinion.

If I were you I'd try to get every last inch of storage that you can. Never enough storage on a boat it seems:)

Really like what you have done with the foam and side panels. Man that Islander hull sure is deep, I was laying down in mine a while ago and though it was deep. An Islander would feel a lot deeper :D. Great for Lake Michigan, maybe someday I will get one... :)

Seat boxes look good mate, i dont see a way of fully opening the cooler lid when its in the seat box though, am i missing something?

Another vote here for the larger side door on the starboard box, ideal spot for a few PFD's.

Looking good man. Can you smell the water? can you feel the sun on your face? Soon my man soon.

Yah maybe pst, maybe just barely. It's faint, distant, but I think I can!:)

Thanks for swinging through bro!

Yah guys, I am with you. I think that will be the just ticket. Let's go that route eh! Thanks!:D

Yup, you should!:D You'll hear no argument from me on that.

Thanks Mark! Great question! Yah, sorry. I should have given a better explanation on that. So here is what I plan to do. I'll cut the cooler lid in half. The front half will be solid, laminated in in seat box and used to mount the port side seat. The back half of the lid will be laminated/bolted into a seat box lid and hinged in the middle. The lid will flip up from stern to bow direction. Check it out...

I think I'll put like a snap or a hook or Velcro or something to keep the lid up when I want it to stay up.

Thanks buddy!

Hey Jas, did you use 1/2 or 3/4 ply for the deck? I tried to find it in your thread but didnt see anywhere. The pieces look like 1/2 but looks can be deceiving. Thanks bro!

I went with 1/2" but I had all that extra structure subdeck. I most likely would have gone with 3/4" (maybe 5/8") had I stayed with the just the original factory stringers.

Hey thanks. Im just trying to decide what i want to put down. It has 1/2 now but i think 3/4 will give it some more structure as you said.

Heres another thought. I have a swim platform on the back of my boat that I put some anchors for the cooler. I then run a rachet strap around it. The platform would be nice for tubing and it is soooo nice having the cooler out of the way. The other big advantage is the fish never come in the boat so you don't have that slimey mess. This opens up a ton of storage under your seats for your batteries, pfd's, tackleboxes...just a thought since you haven't built it yet. Your idea will work too but I know how hectic it can get when you hit ten fish in an hour!!!

Yah, mine was 1/2" original too. The only bummer with 3/4" is that it's heavy. Trad offs ya know. As long as the span isn't too great 5/8" would be a happy medium I think.

Ten fish, yah right. Maybe over the course of a season! Hopefully, with my own rig and some solid time on the water I can get to be a better fisherman in the long run. We'll see.

Yah, my plan is to build a swim platform over next winter, hopefully. I have thought over just rigging it up back there but it will end up covering the ski tow eye. See, this rig will be as much for fishing as family fun. It wouldn't all that excided to unhook that cooler, haul it inboard and have it rolling around while I am dragging the kiddos on the tube. The extra storage space would be nice but I think the trade off is worth it in the end.

Thanks for chipping in the ideas man!:)

Man I miss those days:D

I'd call BS...but since you have Ludington as your location, I know you have probably had days where you've had three on and need another two people to get the net and steer the boat away from some gill nets. Great memories:)

Re: 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Ok, little more progress...

First up, I started to epoxy and feather out the joint on the side panels...
IMAG0231.jpg

(Oh man, that workbench:facepalm:)

Then I flipped them over and sealed up the back side. I decided to just go with Rustoleum vs. epoxy for the back side. Still working on a budget here and I am trying not to have to order more epoxy. Two coats of primer, two coats of topcoat...

I also cut, sanded, primed and painted up two floor pieces for the bow hatches inside the cabin. You can see them in the upper right hand corner of that photo up there.

I eBayed these guide post pads, delivered today so I slid them on...

I bought black ones, thought they would look pretty sharp against a black hull.

I also had a chance to install these LED clearance lights, just in front of the fenders. Picked them up on sale cheap at Menards a long time ago (not wired up yet)...

Couple steps closer.

It still happens...just not as much as it used to...

Great progress on the boat! Another thing to think about is you probably wont be swimming/tubing on the same trip as fishing. Once you start getting 12 rods, 4 downriggers, and 7/0 hooks laying around you don't want to be barefoot. Then you factor in the crawler guts from the bay...It won't be long until people are screaming at you and you are screaming back at them for playing bumper boards (getting too close to each others lead core/copper). :D:D:D

Now THAT sounds like a great day on the water with the family. C'mon down to my neck 'o the woods Jas. Heck, we just shoot 'em and go on fishing;)

Thanks maddie! Ah, I hate fishing in that kind of traffic. I just assume go elsewhere when it gets that bad.

Ok good news, bad news time...

Bad news, it's still raining like crazy, flooding everywhere
Good news, I have multiple boats on property if the flooding goes Biblical
Bad news, only one of them actually floats and it's an 18' canoe, kinda tight for my family of 5 for any length of time
Good news, I feel like I am starting to see some progress on this Islander
Bad news, with the humidity and temps where they are, epoxy takes forever to cure fully
Good news, I bought my Nautolex Marine Grade vinyl super cheap, $7.99/yd
Bad news, just got word they are out of stock, he says maybe a week, maybe a month, for a shipment
Good news, While I'd like to get that cabin done with that vinyl, I still have plenty to do on this rig so I definately shouldn't be held up by such things
Bad news, that Kobalt paint sprayer I bought for 90 whole bux back at Christmas didn't work the last time I tried it about a week ago (yes I cleaned it super well)
Good news, Lowes gave me a full refund, no muss, no fuss

Hey, one step at a time, she'll get there!:)

I haven't mentioned my mom since back a while ago as I hate talking about this stuff (battling a terrible nasty cancer, far too young)...

Good news, just got word yesterday that she seems to be responding to the treatment she is receiving down at the Cleavland Clinic. Now that is very, very good news:D

Hope all is well in your part world!

Yah, totally agree guys. Have to keep priorities where priorities need to be! It was definitely good news but she still has such a long way to go to get out of the woods. Hate it, wish I could do something. Wish I could pick her up can carry her out.

-----------------------------------------

Hey, here is a good one for you guys...

So my bide just called, talked about a few random things, happend to get on topic of the Islander for a half a sec.

Jen says to me...

"You know, your boat is starting to grow on me a little."

Wooohoooo! Yah! All right!!

Hey that was pretty exciting!

Now if I could just get her to like me:facepalm:

Hey Jas,
Just reading some posts and read about your mom, my wife went thru and survied small cell lung cancer. It is a time that we (as loved ones) feel completley useless. I am sure your mom will tell you that just being there for her is a very big help. After the drugs my wife would be sick for a few days and then her biggest request was to be quite and dont cook anything, the smells made her a little sick. Hang in there and rely on your family and friends and if someone volunteers to help with things around the house, do it they are asking to help you because they care.
Take Care,
Sparke
