Re: 1975 Starcraft Mariner 18'

Also planning to get a temp gauge and sender and hopefully a tach if anyone has a link for those that work on a 3 cyl. would be appreciated :D

I don't THINK they use any different of a tach than others. Your standard BassPro/Cabelas/ etc etc Teleflex tachs should work fine.

Re: 1975 Starcraft Mariner 18'

Just a quick update wireless router has been screwing up so haven't been able to get on much. I've got my transom cut out and glued together dry fit and just need to drill the holes and epoxy also have the console nearing completion ( finally made that Menards run) and bow floor piece cut out but not happy with the fit so may redo that one. The parts for my motor finally arrived yesterday so hoping to get to that soon. I also picked up some stripper and the new gun for my pressure washer and the paint guns came so getting closer to some real progress. I'll post some pics as soon as I get the internet working right .

On a side note still having problems deciding on gauges I like the tach EZ posted but can't find a temp gauge to match it may end up with a blue tach and a red temp gauge.

Re: 1975 Starcraft Mariner 18'

It took me more than one attempt to get my bow piece cut even halfway decent...so no worries there. Par for the course so to speak.:)

Looking forward to seeing some pics, hope the interweb gets itself fixed up there.:D

Re: 1975 Starcraft Mariner 18'

Got my internet halfway working again so figured I would try posting some pics.
100_0839.jpg

I was able to cut both transom pieces from one sheet of 3/4" aruco ply probably should have used marine grade but figured since its going to be epoxied anyway.....

100_0840.jpg

100_0843.jpg

looks pretty close to the original it was nice to have a decent pattern to work with

100_0847.jpg

I started painting up some of the engine parts still a long way to go and shortly after taking this pic I managed to knock the cowl on the floor and mess it up anyway:facepalm:

100_0848.jpg

Trailer load of stuff from Menards good thing I have the trailer no room in the garage even without the boat in there

I glued the transom together and clamped it up still need to drill the holes and epoxy

100_0851.jpg

100_0853.jpg

Got my new paint guns still haven't opened the box but they sure are pretty

100_0854.jpg

Then I tore apart the old console not going to reuse most of the stuff but couldn't just throw it out either steering will be too short some of the switches will be reusable for something else I only plan on using the tilt and bilge pump switches at this point

100_0855.jpg

Found some more fishing stuff and a 1975 penny in there must be good luck same year as the boat I kept all the aluminum angle and trim pieces and saved the dash piece for a pattern for switch holes .

Dry fit the transom seems to fit fine so pretty happy with that

100_0860.jpg

Drilling the holes will be the tricky part as original ones are kind of messed up was hoping to flip old transom to be able to mark outside and then use as angle guide but knee brace holes are different from one side of knee brace to the other hmmm....

100_0864.jpg

Then I started on the console I spent hours trying to figure out how to mount those big old johnson controls inside the console and eventually gave up and decided to put them on the left side I ain't to coordinated but think I can work a throttle left handed.

100_0871.jpg

I made a quick template and marked it on the side controls will set with cables and switch facing downward to allow for easier cable routing and mounting on left side is better than backwards as they were when I took them off I think ??

The basic idea complete with steering wheel (held on with a drywall screw) new console is about 5 1/2" narrower than original about 6" higher and a bit longer seat on front is a few inches higher to allow more room for batteries and storage I incorporated two dashes lower one will have the steering wheel, tilt, bilge pump switches and I can put gauges , nav switches, bobbleheads or whatever on the upper one both will be removable and be easily accessible for wiring etc..

100_0879.jpg

Batteries and dual bat switch will go in here I think

100_0882.jpg

I scrounged around for something to make the top dash panel out of and decided to try a piece off the old wiring tray that ran to the bilge I'm replacing it with pvc anyway its pretty grungy and beat up but worth a shot.

100_0884.jpg

I cut it too length and removed one of the angles straightened the other out a bit and gave it a quick cleaning and I think it will work Idk if it will polish up enough to leave it bare or just paint it but easier to work with than the plywood

100_0885.jpg

I plan to epoxy all the seams and end grain and paint the rest I seem to have ended up with lots of rusto so that may be the answer.

Then I started cutting out the floor panels. I went with 1/2" aruco for this as I plan to add some more bracing and that is what it had originally I wanted the extra 1/4" but just couldn't justify the wieght if this lasts as long the original it will out live me anyway

100_0887.jpg

Took a break to go out to the Huron Islands with some friends crappy windy foggy cold day but caught a few lake trout (didn't take any fish pics sorry)

Re: 1975 Starcraft Mariner 18'

Console is lookin' cool.

Thanks EZ.

100_0894.jpg

Yesterday was a nice day so decided to spend some quality time with a stripper I was just going to leave the old paint on but since Jas made me buy a new sprayer......

100_0895.jpg

The stripper worked pretty good and a lot easier than sanding at first I was brushing it on letting it set a while and pressure washing it off spent a few hours with this method

100_0898.jpg

Then I finally figured out if I scrubbed it with a stiff brush after five minutes or so it did a lot better and things sped up a little

100_0901.jpg

100_0902.jpg

One can of stripper gone only got two and at this rate it will probably take 4 but got a start on it anyway. Off until Tuesday afternoon so hoping to get some more done this weekend although weather tomorrow doesn't sound good for stripping may work on some more of the plywood instead.

Hey yoop, go to Harbor Freight and buy one of these. You'll be AMAZED at how a 3/8" Drill and this kit will polish that Dash Piece.
