Well in that case...I'd grind it and get rid of it.

Re: 1974 Ebbtide Restoration

Another question. I put my stringer jigs in the hull just to try them out. I thought they looked a little uneven so I took some measurements. Turns out that on the front jig, the distance from the jig to the hull was between 1/2" and 1" different from one side to the other depending on how you moved them around. I'm not sure if it matters. And if it did, I'm not sure what could be done about it. I mean I could move the jigs up and down, but then the floor height would be off.
I hope that makes sense. Does it matter if the stringers are slightly different in height?

You want to get them close but...as long as they're a bit higher than needed a level, stringline and jig saw can make em the right height once they're installed.

Well, the whole "life" thing has happened to me. Not in a bad way but i've had my house on the market for a while and we signed a contract Saturday so the next month or two may be spotty as far as getting any work done. We'll see how it goes. Hey, at least the boat is still on the trailer so all I have to do is put the cap on, strap it down, and drive it to the new house.

Well, still doin the house sellin/buyin thing. As it stands now, my boat is still unmoved so I'm trying to get some work done. I got the center string template made and am trying to get it just right. I have found that just slightly tightening those ropes cinches the hull in such a way as to lift the outer portions of the hull in relation to the keel making it difficult to determine just exactly where it should be. I suppose it doesn't have to be perfect. I just going to tweak it until I'm satisfied.

Thanks for the encouragement GT. I fully intend to hit my deadline if at all possible. I'm at that stage where I'm dealing with things I don't know a whole lot about and over thinking simple problems so if you see me doing something stupid, let me know.

Re: 1974 Ebbtide Restoration

Stringer question. So my new stringer is a little wider than the one that I removed so it's bottoming out higher. I don't know if all boat are this way but my keel is actually a trough in the bottom of the center of the hull and the old stringer fit into that groove. Question is, can I cut a little bit of a "V" onto the bottom of the string to allow it to fall just a hair into the keel or should I just cut it higher and flat. If I cut the V it will save me a little money on the peanut butter.:joyous:

Thoughts?

V away, just make sure to leave room for PB between the new keel/stringer and the hull.

Re: 1974 Ebbtide Restoration

So I placed an order for my first round of resin (goop) this morning. Does that come with something to measure out the hardener or do I need to add that to my order?

Following along. Great job so far.

To answer your question. It should come with a small cup to measure the hardener.

Go to the Drugstore and get some Graduated cups with CC markings on them. They're cheap and work great.

I splurged and bought the $6 EZ catalyst dispenser from my resin vendor. Works marvellously.

If you can get hold of them, disposable plastic pipettes graduated to 3ml are really easy to use...
On a quick cursory search, I found these...Pipettes
You can use them over and over until they develop a leak and no longer pull up the MEK-P
You could even buy just a couple, and pre-measure your catalyst into a separate cup until you are ready to add it to the resin.
One of the reasons I like them is that when working with resin, there are times you need to mix up an extra batch or two, "on the fly", while you still have your PPE on, your gloves are full of glass hairs, and everything is sticky...at those times, you won't feel so bad if your pipette gets all messed up with hardened resin and glass, as opposed to one of those nice measuring bottles with the graduated cup attached...
Then again, you could probably go to your local pharmacy and ask for a couple of free cough medicine/mouthwash measuring cups...

Re: 1974 Ebbtide Restoration

GT, I think I saw you using those in one of your videos correct?

So I did some checking trying to get ready to do these conversions. So If i'm supposed supposed to mix the hardener to 2% and let's just say I want to make a quart of peanut butter. A quart comes to roughly 950ml. that would be 9.5ml X 2 or 19ml or hardener correct?

From what I have read about poly resin is that you have to a feel for it because it is temp dependent and on a warm day it will kick faster than on a cooler day. So on a warmer day i may want to mix at 1.5% or 14ml of hardener.

Does this sound right so far?

Also syringes work well for small batches...1CC = 1ML.

Re: 1974 Ebbtide Restoration

Yes you did, and thanks to the fact that my Admiral works in a lab, I have been using them exclusively for years...
And Yep, that sounds about right...
I actually run into the situation where the amount of UV heat we get down here can and has kicked off batches of resin that I have mixed as low as 1/2% or .5ml to every 100ml...
I actually goofed once and mixed up a batch that I had only added point one percent{.01**, and while it sat in the shaded area for over an hour it still hadn't kicked, that's when I realized my mistake...at the time it was time for some lunch, so I decided to do an experiment and pulled the boat out into direct sunlight...half an hour later, after lunch, it had fully kicked...
Keep in mind this happened to me when I was installing the "nailers" around the top edge of the hull, and it would have been no huge deal if I would have had to remove it and it really isn't a strength area, so I am not overly concerned with what detrimental effect the lack of catalyst is going to have in that area...up to this point, several months later, I have seen no ill effects from my brain fart...
Also, due to the temps we get down here, I rarely, if ever go above 1.5%, I usually stay in the .75-1.25% range...that comes from mixing many, many batches of resin over time...even in the marinas where I have done some work repairing fiberglass on some pretty big boats/yachts...from experience and through advice from the "old timers", this is the amount of catalyst generally used down here...
The only places I have heard they ever used more than 1.5% was during original production, inside of fairly cool warehouses where they could keep the temps in the 70's and in the shade...

On another note, one of the super gurus on the site, "oops!"...would go as high as 2.5-3% catalyst, in the frozen North when he was stretching his boat...
