Re: 1974 Chieftan 21' 165 Mercruiser I/O

Thanks everyone. The tree held up just great with that 600 pound motor

Spent yesterday doing some more wiring and installing the lower unit. I'm still working on the tilt/trim trying to get that work, but am not sure what this doughnut launcher thang a ma bob is. I've searched some in the mercruiser forum, but havent got a clue... maybe I'm spelling it wrong? Any of you guys know what it does or maybe what the 2 wires connect to?

There's a picture of what I'm talking about here on post #10 http://forums.iboats.com/starcraft-boats/1974-chieftan-21-165-mercruiser-i-o-633168.html

That would be the old old style trim sender seen here in the group 54-60 in the diagram sorry I can't help with how it works or is wired.

Thanks Glen. I do have a wiring diagram of it, but it isn't very clear how it hooks up. I'm just going to hook it up in parallel with the trim limit switch.

If it works like the newer style trim senders, 1 wire will go to ground and the other to the sender side of the trim gauge.

Nice seeing the power plant in. Getting much closer. I had that same style on the unit I took out. Took a look at it in the garage as it is mounted to the inner gimbal plate just above the trim pump. But the 2 wires out of the end of the barrel with the plug ends are not hooked up and the pics I had when it was installed is not clear enough to help you. Might check with DozerII as I think he has the same set up in his.

I had lots of wires not hooked up when I took this boat apart. (A few wires taped outside the factory loom that had been really hot and melted) I've studied the wiring diagram I found that Don S posted a few years ago.... it doesn't lable where the wires really go, but it makes sense what Glen says. I'll put one to ground and the purple one to the gauge and see what happens.

Thanks

I have the newer set in the Alpha One but I found a schematic on the system you have. Shows how it works but not where the wires are supposed to go.

Re: 1974 Chieftan 21' 165 Mercruiser I/O

I got the tilt/trim working pretty good. I still don't have a working tilt gauge .... that guage didn't get replaced, so it might be toast.

I filled up the lower unit with fresh oil, connected some water, turned the key.... nothing. No click or anything.

Traced the no start down to a problem with the nuetral safety switch or the canon plug. I had to R & R the safety switch before I installed the shifter and am pretty sure it's working. I tried to download the pin schematic for the cannon plug, but the boatinfo website is acting strange and won't load.

So.... I used one of my spare wires I put into the loom for a start wire to the solenoid... and bada boom she fired right up and ran great. Except for a bad noise and vibration at idle. Then, a sinking feeling fell on me and I realized what was wrong. I totally forgot the broken front motor mount support on my donor boat. I had a heck of a time getting the lower unit of that donor.

The only thing to do now was to go back to the hangin' tree and bite the bullet. Three beer later the engine coupler is changed. :)

I didn't remove the engine from the boat. I just pulled it and got some wood to set it back down on the boat floor. It started to get late after I buttoned it all up, so I fired it up without the lower unit. I rechecked the alignment before calling it a night. Tomorrow, I will need to raise the front motor mount a little and slam the lower unit home.

I should have that running video tomorrow night :watermelon:

Not too bad of a Murphy visit then if it only take a few hours to get back on track. Looking forward to seeing your Chief sputter to life!

Re: 1974 Chieftan 21' 165 Mercruiser I/O

Thanks guys, but this wasn't so much a Murphy incident.... unless I'm looking in a mirror. Totally my fault assuming the PO of my donor boat didn't run his boat with a broken front motor support.

It's raining, but I backed the butt end of the boat into the garage. So, I'm heading out soon and get that lower unit on.

:)

Oh man what a milestone! That inline 6 hits right off and purrs like a kitten, that's awesome CJ. :thumb:

I see you decided on battery placement. Hard not to put them back there since there's so much room to spare.

Re: 1974 Chieftan 21' 165 Mercruiser I/O

A little more progress tonight. The transom deck lid finally got painted and the supports got rebuilt. I changed the trim gauge and shorted out 3 other gauges... I might need to replace thet oil, water, and fuel gauge again. :grumpy: I did successfully get the tachometer changed.

There's not a lot of bling on this fishing boat, but I splurged a little today.

I'm going to try and splash this weekend, but my short list is still kind of long. We'll see. I'm just happy that it's not snowing on me like Glen's having to deal with.
