Re: 1974 Chieftan 21' 165 Mercruiser I/O

The bulkheads are done. I put 2 coats of spar on them and roughed em up for some rusty gloss white. I might cover the outside of them with some leftover vinyl, but will wait and see what they look like. I don't want to install them until I finish up the interior of the cabin.

I worked on the rub rails a little bit... here's what I have to take care of:

I also got to work on cleaning some of the hardware I'd like to re-use:

Here's my attempt at using the chrome paint.... I've since painted the rod holders white and the vents black.

Here are the cabin enclosures all glued up and nail holes filled:

I'm hoping to get these sanded down tomorrow and painted. I plan on going with rusty gloss white on these also.

Without looking at the HT build, no way it looks like glassed wood. Wonder how heavy it ended up?

Were you able to work any of the kinks out of the rub rail channels? And the chrome paint wasn't very chrome looking, I'm guessing.

That rub rail looks a bit mangled up, be interesting to see if it can be nudged back into shape some.

The cabin box sides were all wood and not aluminum, that's an interesting difference between our Chiefs. They look nice and sturdy with 3/4 and the corner braces in there.

That HT build looked heavy to me, but very well built. I was able to work some of the kinks out of that rub rail channel with a anvel, hammer, some chisels, and some cursing. Yeah, I didn't like that chrome paint.

My Chief had those aluminum box sides. I'm changing some things up a little and it was just easier not to use them.

Nice job on the cabin boxes cj, they look like they were a fairly complicated build. I had some rub rail on the Holiday that looked similar to yours. The starboard side was bent real bad about 4ft from the bow it took about 4 hours of massaging to get it to look good. The piece on the stern was a real mess it looked like the stern had been under the edge of a dock during a storm and rubbed a hole 6"long through it, as well it had 4, 5/16 holes drilled through it from old down riggers. I filled all the holes with JB an painted with Rusto Pro Aluminum silver, it is almost a perfect match to the anodizing on the rest of the rail.

No kidden, nice job on those!:thumb:

Thanks guys. I had 3 of those wobbly pops cutting those boxes out... so, about 3 hours  Part of the problem was the floor is not level in the very front of the bow. Noboby's fault but my own. Of course, it will be hidden inside the box.

The rusto chrome paint won't be a good match at all. Thanks for the tip Glen. I'll try that pro aluminum silver.

I got those boxes all sanded down, but didn't get any paint on them yet. I worked on building a new console. It came out pretty good and will get some pictures up this weekend.

Boxes look really nice. Way better than the original tin plus gives a bit more weight up in the bow + + + . Now lets get on to the beverage abuse.......3 hours for 3 cold ones = possible warming???? oh no. unless of course you sat and observed and debated while indulging upon them thus being sure to completely empty each one well before the warming stage.

lol Willy. I didn't say how big each cold one was. If I drink more than one 64 oz / hour.... I get woooozy :drunk:

Some slow progress, but progress is progress:

The Admiral and I went shoping for a new sewing machine. We picked up a heavy duty singer capable of sewing vinyl. I also picked up about 6 yards of vinyl from JoAnns for 1/2 off.

The cabin boxes are finished up and ready to install tomorrow.

Gotta love Joanns coupons, I love walking in there covered in sawdust after I have been cutting ply in the shop for hours on end. She looks great. I've never been a fan of Chiefs but looking at your boat is making me reconsider.

Watermann go to their website and sign up the mail coupons every 2 months or so. The coupons are easy to come by with a google search too.

wow....lookin really nice. let me add my admiration at those interior seat boxes.....some real tricky carpentry there, to deal with the increasing-radius curve of hull AND faux-lapstrake. :clap2:

You should add a Chief to the hanger Sig :D There are very few Islanders or Chiefs in my area and this one might go up for sale later this summer. I'm curious what I could get for her around here. I'd like to build a 24 or 25 Islander/Chief.

Thanks B2. I could've done a little better with the carpentry, but it's gonna work for this fishing boat.

Just waiting for some good ole fish guts and blood. :faint2:

Hey ShowMe. There are some 3/4" blocking strips that I used to screw it down into the floor joist and floor. There is a stationary top that the lid is hinged to that is screwed into the aluminum angle along the bow. (That normal angle along the bow like your SS has for the seat boxes)

Thanks H2O. This is definetely the fun part. :joyous: Much better than sanding or trailer work.

I'm using Glen for my inspiration. I don't expect my vinyl work will look as great as his, but it's time to learn how to do this stuff.

This piece of vinyl is for the console. The lighter blue strip will be in the center.... I hope. LOL
