looks great cj, and good discussion on screws vs rivets. i am working on an 18 ss and was thinking of rivets for the most part, but not real sure what is best.

Love that flooring, just wish maybe they had a couple different colors of blue rather than just the one.

Thanks Cowboy. You're probably thinking right on using the rivets. Starcraft built a lot of boats over the years and they used those large flange blind rivets. Those guys are smarter than me.

I only had a few of those rivets left, so I ordered some more from Jay Cee.

I hear ya Watermann. It's still a hard choice even though there are only 6 colors. I liked the sandstone color and almost went that way.

Thanks for stopping by Jim.

I'm going to try and emulate Glen's last Nautolex job (on the 18' Holiday). Good luck to me, right? :joyous:

Using the plastic should be just the ticket for a successful job. Here's a different type of cement I found at the HD that I intend on using... Unless I hear different from you guys... It is soap and water clean up and takes a little longer to tack up.

I used the Weldwood Contact Cement but it was the regular high potent formula. Except for the fumes and the buzz when applying it the Nautolex held good and fast. Hopefully what you have there is not as detrimental to your brain cells as the stuff I used but just as good adhesion wise.

Other than being a different brand, that looks like the right stuff cj, you are going to spray it on?

I bought an extra cheap spray gun just in case I trashed it. I think spraying will give the best coverage.

The 8 inches of snow we got Monday is almost melted away with the rain yesterday. The sun is shining ... :joyous: Come on SPRING!

Today felt like Spring even though there are still little piles of snow. Now we just need the weather man to acknowledge that Spring is here.

A little progress today.

It took 2 quarts of weldwood contact cement and I sprayed it. There was no bad odor and clean up was warm water. The directions said to wait 30 to 40 minutes, but 20 seemed to work great.

I got to work on the lower windshield. The 2 pieces of poly are in but I need to make a T-molding to support the middle. I'm thinking about using a good quality silicone to glaze the poly sheets into the frame. I wonder if I should scrap that idea and just use 5200?

I want to try and build a hardtop and have found a few pictures on the internet. Can anyone tell me if this is Starcraft hardtop. I would love some better pictures if anyone has them.

CJ your Nautolex looks great. Windshield looks like it fit in well. I have searched plenty online for a center channel that would or could be usable but so far no luck. Still have hopes for making it a 1 piece windshield. I too had thought about a hard top but there are days when I would like to be open air and enjoy the sun so my thought was an arch similar to this :
Captains Package Visor Combo Uni-Arch "Free Shipping" but also have front mounts that would attach to the cabin roof. The sunbrella would be removable but could be quickly put back on via snaps.

I wouldn't use silicone, I would swing by a local glass shop and buy a tube of their poly goop that they use. Tape off the area you don't want the stuff on and glaze with the poly goop. They also have heavy rubber double channel weather striping that accommodates a piece of glass on either side to seal the center of the panes. I thought about the same thing your doing except going to use tempered glass rather than poly so I went in and researched the thought at my buddies glass shop. He said don't use silicone unless you want it to fail and leak down the road.

Hard top huh, well check this Islander HT build out...

Thanks Jim. There's alot of Real Estate in the interior of this thing... gonna take me awhile.

Thanks EZ.

I think that's a homemade or transfer from another boat. The Starcraft HTs have higher windshield and side windows. The HT side windows are pretty big and are sliders..

Thanks GA. I like those hardtops and would like to build one if I could do it light enough.

Thanks WnW. I bought some aluminum stock today to make a center channel. Thanks for the link... that would look great on your chief!! I think your rebuild would warrant that top.

Thanks Glen. I appreciate the tips you gave in your holiday thread.

Thanks for the tip Watermann. I've watched that Islander HT build quiet a few times. That guy did a great job.

No progress pics from today, but I got the cabin bulkheads cut out. I also started fixing up the side rails. They are in such bad shape and need to be hammered out straight. The PO used screws to hold it into the top of the gunnel which now needs the holes filled with JB weld. My thoughts are to spray them with some chrome paint and if that doesn't look right I'll go with black.

Yeah my Chief's side rails were missing so I deleted the little dinky rail on the cabin too. I'm putting some 24" SS handrails on both sides next to the helm and nav seats. I also didn't put the side 'rub rail' back on either. It was in very bad shape from brine.
