Thanks guys!

It was a nice 2 day break... now its snowing again. Wednesday might work for the blue stripe :joyous:

I sure wish that furry rat hadn't seen his shadow.

No painting this week, but some forward progress. It looks like this Chief was docked during a pretty bad storm because the side rails are beat to snot. It was pretty difficult to remove the rubber insert, but eventually was able to. It's going to take some work to bend the gunnels back straight and fix the rub rail channel.

The bow lid needed to come off because some of the wood under it was rotten.

The new bow structure is cut, spared, and drying:

Having that bow lid off sure makes it easier to get the inside cleaned up. My plan is to paint the inside either white or grey. A few more hours of cleaning should get me ready.

Nice work there CJ.... it always surprises me how much work it is to get those pesky rub rail rubber's out! They really fight to stay attached!

Those new bow supports look great --- and will last forever no doubt!

I must be lucky, my RRs slide right out. In fact they are loose in the channel and sometimes dock wacking knocks part of the top or bottom out and I have to squeeze them back into the channel.

Too bad the bow wood is gonna be out of sight, CJ - Looks good.

Nice progress Cj. Bow structure looks great. Not sure what you have in mind when you install the structure but when I had my Islander I used to spend weekends camping inside it on the water. During the night the condensation would drip down from the aluminum.....pretty annoying. So I plan on using pink board and stuff the cavities and then cover so hopefully I won't experience the drips again in the Chief.

Hey CJ, looking good on the bow cover supports, I'm glad all of my original mahogany was intact. I would suggest you remove the gunnels too. It's way easier to repair, sand and prime them outside the boat and I'm sure you've noticed the little 5/32 nds rivets holding them on are all loose too.

Thanks Jim. Rub rails rank right up with pour in foam to me.

Thanks Glen. I noticed how you did yours with that ply on top. I bet that is super strong.

That's a great ideal Willy!

No kidding B2. I hadn't even considered doing that under the bow lid. I was going to use some of that thin white poly board from HD on the cabin roof.

It's funny you mention that Water. There were only a couple of rivets holding each gunnel and only 3 or 4 on the bow lid.

I need some advice on the type of rivets to use on my gunnels, bow lid, and chief cabin. I have plenty of aluminium shanked rivets but am concerned whether they will be strong enough. Should I go buy some steel shanked aluminium rivets?

All I have used is Aluminum/Aluminum the steel shanks rust right away. A good quality Alum/Alum will work just fine.

Well SC used the aluminum rivets with steel mandrels and it has caused me more concern when I saw this...

So how strong are the steel mandrels when they turn to iron oxide?

Next, don't loose one or more of the mandrels inside the boat and forget about it...

Cost wise the alum/alum works just fine. SS rivets will run you at least 3 times the price most the times.

I was being stupid last week shoveling all that snow and threw my back out. Some of that stupid disc degenerative disease. Eventually, I'm going to have to go for another surgery. I'll be moving slowly the next few weeks ... but here's some forward progress.

Here's the lid and inside of boat with some etching:

Where's all your snow, CJ? The bow lid is lookin' good all shiny. Good rebuilt structure under it too.

Careful with the back! I know what you mean, I have to watch how I work and twist mine. A real PITA or slightly above.
