Nice work there CJ.... it always surprises me how much work it is to get those pesky rub rail rubber's out! They really fight to stay attached!
Those new bow supports look great --- and will last forever no doubt!
J.
I must be lucky, my RRs slide right out. In fact they are loose in the channel and sometimes dock wacking knocks part of the top or bottom out and I have to squeeze them back into the channel.
Too bad the bow wood is gonna be out of sight, CJ - Looks good.
Hull is looking real good cj, I hear ya on the bow structure had to redo all mine as well.
Nice progress Cj. Bow structure looks great. Not sure what you have in mind when you install the structure but when I had my Islander I used to spend weekends camping inside it on the water. During the night the condensation would drip down from the aluminum.....pretty annoying. So I plan on using pink board and stuff the cavities and then cover so hopefully I won't experience the drips again in the Chief.
willy, that's a great example of the sort of info one gets here that i never would have thought of.
CJ, looking good.
Hey CJ, looking good on the bow cover supports, I'm glad all of my original mahogany was intact. I would suggest you remove the gunnels too. It's way easier to repair, sand and prime them outside the boat and I'm sure you've noticed the little 5/32 nds rivets holding them on are all loose too.
I need some advice on the type of rivets to use on my gunnels, bow lid, and chief cabin. I have plenty of aluminium shanked rivets but am concerned whether they will be strong enough. Should I go buy some steel shanked aluminium rivets?
Thanks GlennAll I have used is Aluminum/Aluminum the steel shanks rust right away. A good quality Alum/Alum will work just fine.
Well SC used the aluminum rivets with steel mandrels and it has caused me more concern when I saw this...
So how strong are the steel mandrels when they turn to iron oxide?
Next, don't loose one or more of the mandrels inside the boat and forget about it...
Cost wise the alum/alum works just fine. SS rivets will run you at least 3 times the price most the times.
