Now that Javon Ringer is gone, whats a MSU fan to do...good luck this year! I have a feeling that this "rebuilding year" for us bucks is going to turn into a coming out party for our sophmore class. Not going to dominate nationally but big ten beware!

Wife has bronchitus and cant go to work, the cable is there for the camera. I cant win. THis now makes one camera dead from wife leaving it out in the rain after taking boat pictures, 1 dead battery after wife left it out in the sun to boil Nicad, and now one stranded usb cable due to wifes infectious disease...I dont know about you, but I think I need a camera of my own?

Guys, I installed my transom on Sunday. That would be 3.5 days ago. Is that long enough cure time? Can I take the clamps off at least today? It is supposed to rain tomorrow so I need to get the boat back in the garage. RIght now I have so many 2x4's and clamps on it it looks like Pinhead ala horror movies...what do you think? The Epoxy that I can see and touch that oozed out is hard as a rock...

YEAH OK:rolleyes: Good luck with that...

Well, the CBJ are a pretty stellar group of hockey players, I mean hell, if your wings wouldnt have gotten lucky in round one then we wouldve went on to destroy the Penquins instead of seeing your poor squad get embarrased at home;)

I took the clamps off and all was well. A few of the bolts were stcuk but thanks to the tip on heating the bolts they came out without incident. I am really pleased with how it turned out. It is SOLID! Wife is going back to work today so she will get the camera cord and I will post hopefully tonight if not tmorrow morning.

Alright, as promised here are pictures of this past weekends progress. I was able to get the transom epoxied in place and made a 14' long piece of ply for my stringers.

This started life as 2 sheets of 4x8 arrucco exterior grade ply. I set the table saw at 5/8" and measured 24" from the edge of both sheets. I then ran both pieces through the table saw along those 24" marks at 5/8" deep which is half of the thickness of the ply. Once that was done I used a router with the depth set to 5/8" to cut a criss cross pattern in the ply. I did this so that I could use a chisel on smaller 4" sections to make it easier to remove. Once this was done on both pieces I took the grinder with a flap disk and cleaned up the surfaces real well so I would have a better fit without having too many high and low spots. Then I blew them off with compressed air got all my clamps ready, popped open a tube of PL premium, squeezed out an entire tube on one piece of ply, overlapped the two pieces together like a zipper and clamped them down just enough to allow a little oozage. This is what I have now...

The transom was next. I had already laminated the ply to the required 1 1/2" thickness, coated both sides and edges with 3 coats of epoxy and ground the surfaces of the transom outer skin and the fully cured resin on the transom wood. I started by coating both surfaces with epoxy at its normal viscosity, then once both were fully wet, I mixed up a batch of PB(a mixture of epoxy and collidial silica which ends up about the consitency of peanut butter or mayonaise) and applied it to the transom wood surface with a 1/2" notch trough. My buddy and I carefully placed it in the boat and inserted the 3/8x4" bolts with washers and nuts through the wax paper covered 2x4's on the outside.

We added clamps then started to tighten everything a little at a time watching for the epoxy to start oozing. Once the ooze started to flow, I cleaned up the leakage with a putty spreader.

boat055.jpg

That was that...waited about 4 days for it to cure then removed all the clamps and braces. This is what I have now!

This weekend the real fun begins! I will be mixing PB to squish into the gap all the way around the transom wood then tabbing it in place with 8.5oz tape then 2 layers of 1708. After that I will get started with the stringers. My gas tank is due in today! Things are finally starting to move along...

Looking good there Chris!!!

Thank KIR! I appreciate that. I would like to tell you the same! Your project is pretty damn cool. I cant wait to see how yours will look when finished. Have you set a date to be "done"?

I can't wait to see how mine will look either :D but I'm in no rush, I have not set a new date to be done (old date May/June 09), when it's done it's done.

I feel you there! I have never set a date nor will I. She sails when shes done! Well, keep going on yours, you will have one sharp boat at the end. Thanks for the kind words, it helps to know you are doing something well. Especially when you are like the two of us, you know, never having done this before...

Re: 1973 wellcraft 165 sport airslot project w/ pics

Well, another productive weekend has come and gone. So, heres this weekends update.

The weekend started with a present at the door!

boat062.jpg

Getting this allows me to build my stringers! ANyhow, I started on Saturday by filling the void/gap all the way around the transom wood with PL premium. I knew that it would expand a bit while curing so I only filled the gap till just slightly less than flush. I did this because it was much cheaper not mention faster than using epoxy PB. I ended up using 2 small tubes! I knew that I wanted to use epoxy PB for the fillet in order to get a good bond in the transition areas from vertical to horizontal. I couldnt find any info on how long to wait for the PL to cure before putting epoxy over it so I just erred on the safe side and let it cure overnight.(edit. PL takes about 24 hours to set up all the way through but it is not fully hard until about day 3) This is what I had at this point...

boat063.jpg

Seeing as though this was at about noon, I didnt want to waste the day, so I got to fiberglassing the top edge of the transom where you can see the endgrain. I used 3 layers of my 8.5oz cloth tape cut to fit at 1.5"(thickness of transom). This is what I had after that...

boat061.jpg

I realize this is probably overkill but I want this transom to last a LONG time and besides, I am overkilling every other area anyways, why stop now????

So that is all that I could do for the day so I help the wife the rest of the afternoon.

Re: 1973 wellcraft 165 sport airslot project w/ pics

I woke up early Sunday because I knew I had to grind the area about 6" out from the transom so that I could get a good bond when I tab and cover the transom with glass. So, I dawned my protective suit and went out in the early morning coolness and went to making a white mess.

Once that was done I shopvaced the whole boat out and hit it with acetone a few times. I put the boat back in the garage and went to work on making some PB to fillet the edges of the transom. After I applied that( use the round corner of the squeegee, it works great!) I precut all my glass. I used 2 layers of 8.5oz tape for the tabbing and 1708 for the full cover. I wetted out the transom and hull surrounding the area and started laying glass. I decided that I may as well do all the layers at once. It worked out really well. See!

boat065.jpg

As you can see, I just laid the full layer of 1708 at the same time.

Then I took a little break before starting the stinger layout knowing that this would be the hardest part of the project. See, I have been dreading this from day one! I am no carpenter to say the least...so, what do you do when you arent sure about something? why you click up oops' hull extension thread! THere I learned how to do the post and scribe method for getting the stringer to match the hull! Now this is no easy feat. It took a lot of patience and a few throws across the room of the pencil and hammer handle that I used as my scribe... But, I got it done. Is this the worlds largest pair of steak knives????????

boat071.jpg

NAHHHHHH, its my outer stringers!

What a pain that was! ANyhow, this is where I am...hoping this long weekend coming up allows me to get all my stringers cut and glassed and maybe, just maybe get them bedded and tabbed:eek:

Oh, I forgot to mention that I ran out of 1708..so I ordered another 8 yards. I intend on doing one more full wrap on the transom and 2 or 3 full wraps on all the stringers. Hopefully I will receive it before this weekend so that I can continue...

Re: 1973 wellcraft 165 sport airslot project w/ pics

Well, last night I decided to try thinning my epoxy after reading several threads about it. I used acetone. It worked out great! I wanted to REALLY waterproof my stringers that best I could. SO I brushed on several coats to each side and bot edges of each stringer. It sucked it up like crazy. After only 15 minutes the wood looked dry and was dry to the touch! After several coats of this I applied PB to the end grain edges to seal them completely. TOnight I will scuff them up again and put a couple layers of 8.5oz cloth on them.

I am trying to get as much done throughout the week so that this weekend I can install them without having to wait for epoxy to cure...

I am having a hard time deciding if I want to glass them first while on the bench instead of PL'ing them down then glassing in place...what do you guys think? My main concern is that if I glass them now all of my tabbing and bulkheads will only be mechanical bonds instead of chemical. Any opinions on this?

Your getting there Chris , and thats amazing from some one from Ohio !!! LOL

HAHAHAHA she really does look good , I would put the stringers in then glass them , tab them in frist then glass over them !! if you do them on the bench first you might have a harder time , dont forget to bed them in also !!!

Keep it up and you will be where I am sooner then you think !! John
