I live in Des Moines, IA. I purchased this boat in December. It was 364 miles fron my house. Today I took my "before pictures". Hopefully I will start demo tomorrow. This could go on for some time. I'm 60yo, unemployed and broke. You gotta have your priorities... right? I have had boats all my life. I've had jon boats from 12' to 20', bass boats and jet boats but, never had a "Tinny". This boat is a monster. It's a 21' SC Mariner but it's set up just like a Super Sport. It has twin consoles with a split windshield and an open bow area with platform, swivel seat and storage underneath. The moter is a 1972 Evenrude 125hp w/electric shift and t&t. The story I got from the PO was the motor was rebuilt, tested on the lake and then sat for 4 years outside with a tarp. It has 4 tires on the trailer but only one axle. I have seen many helpful threads here and can't wait to get started. BOAT Before 010.jpgBOAT Before 017.jpgBOAT Before 030.jpgBOAT Before 035.jpgBOAT Before 049.jpg

Welcome to the Tin House, Greek. Looks like who ever made a 21' SS out of a Mariner did some nice work. Good looking M/SS. What are you planning to do to her? Have fun and hope the job situation improves for ya. Have fun on the cheap - We're good at that too.

Thanks for the compliments and kind words of encouragement. I got a little done today, more fixing than demo. I got the ignition back together and mounted. Got a battery in the boat and it turns over. I have a question for you guys that have been doing this for some time. Were all SC "Mariners" built with a center console ? My research also tells me the SS configuration didn't come out untill 1974. I guess I'm trying to find out if someone rebuilt this boat, or it's factory.

greek - All Mariners were center consoles from the factory. Is there a tag on the starboard gunnel with a model number on it?

I would really like to see some pics of the bow seating and the consoles that you have. It looks like someone put a lot of work in that boat to convert it.

The only other thing that comes to mind is maybe you have a prototype boat, where the factory re configured the seating and it ultimately became the SS line.

Thanks again all of you. Here are some interior pics. I really don't have any good shots of the bow area. It's going to rain next couple of days but will get better pics when it's sunny again.BOAT Before 069.jpgBOAT Before 040.jpgBOAT Before 039.jpgBOAT Before 054.jpgBOAT Before 056.jpg

Re: 1972 Starcraft 21' Mariner (Split Windshield) Rebuild

Moving right along at a snails pace, I managed to get the front deck torn out Saturday. I took a few pics of what was underneath. Truck Driver came over and spent the whole day trying to get the motor running. He's a really nice guy. My Brother even spent some time on it but between the two of them they never got it started. Truck Driver thinks it's the power pack. I also had a friend call to say he had modified his engine stand to hold the Evenrude. Now I have no excuse not to replace the transom. Stay tuned...

Thank you. Eventually I want to replace: the floor and flotation, transom, all seating and paint. I wouldn't mind having a motor I trusted either.

Re: 1972 Starcraft 21' Mariner (Split Windshield) Rebuild

Other than not getting it started it was good day. Had fun meeting a fellow iBoater/boatnut, boat tinkering, and just general BSing.:D

If the boats been converted someone did a beautiful job of it as it really looks factory. The only things that would lead to looking like a conversion were the sort of pieced together side panels in the bow and the way they were mounted. But even in looking at that it was hard (for me anyway) to say that if it was a prototype the factory wouldn't of done it.

Couple the appearance of the boat overall with the fact that its got an aftermarket T&T jackplate type thing, and the windlass up front that's run by a big hydraulic pump under the splashwell, its not to far of a stretch to think its been converted.

Greek took the serial number ff the CG plate and I suggested he contact SC to see if they might have any records or info on it. I don't know how fruitful that would be. Any thoughts on that idea from the Starmada?

Overall its a nice boat with usable floors, dicey transom that sounds like he's making plans to replace before splashing, and tons of potential.

PS Glad to meet ya

Re: 1972 Starcraft 21' Mariner (Split Windshield) Rebuild

I have kinda been dragging my feet on this project because there was absolutely NO funding. I really was scared of tearing it apart and not being able to put it back together. Well there could be some funding on the way. With that said, I now have a few questions. I want to replace the transom and quite possibly the motor. I know from reading a few threads on here that you drill the new transom to fit the motor before putting the resin on it and sealing it. If I'm getting a different motor I'll be drilling after it's put back together. How do you seal the freshly drilled holes in the new transom? They will probably be drilled at the time if installation so there won't be any drying time.
My next question is how small of a motor can I put on this boat and still have enough motor? It's rated for a 140hp. I don't need to win any races but I would like it to scoot right along.

3M 5200 works great.

Heads up, big OB's are $$$

Re: 1972 Starcraft 21' Mariner (Split Windshield) Rebuild

Is it worth spending several hundred to get my 1972 Evenrude 125 running, only to sell it? Should I just try selling as is? Truck Driver thinks it needs a Power Pack.
