Is it worth spending several hundred to get my 1972 Evenrude 125 running, only to sell it? Should I just try selling as is?

Tough call...

No doubt you'll make waaaayyyyy more if the motor is running vs. not. But what's the break even point? Dunno. Maybe one of the smart OB guys will swing through and give you some advice on that.

do not sink several hundred into that motor....almost everyone shys away from electric shift outboards......

you should be able to buy a good compression 100-140 hp V4 in the made in the 80's for less than $1000. sell your motor for a parts motor.....or a fixer upper for someone else...you save a few hundred, you make a few hundred more maybe..and you are almsot half way to your next motor.....

good luck

Well...Truck Driver left just a little bit ago but not before he had the motor running. Even though I had told him I was going to sell it, without fixing it, he volunteered to pull the pulse pack off of his motor and try it on mine. Have I mentioned he's a really nice guy? It wasn't real easy and he did get a pretty good shock but it runs and idles smooth and shifts just fine. Now I have to take it off so I can sell it....

P S: Bob I wish I lived in your market area for motors. In my area it's gonna cost twice that much or more for a good 80's motor. There are a few late 70's motors around for about a grand.

I was a little disheartened when he said he was going to pass on the offer to give it another shot and just sell it as is. As after tinkering on it last weekend I was still curious if my diagnosis was right but I'd never know. But like my own curiosity, Greek's kicked in and he called me back to say lets give it a try.:) Nothing better than after a bit of tinkering hearing the sound of that motor firing off.

Side note - I looked at my Evi parts motor the reed plate and everything on the intake side is gold but the block and heads are red so the repaint could lend a bit of credibility to the being rebuilt story. Or its just been repainted.

My .02, sink your money in the boat, when it's done take a look at your funding. If it's low, buy the power pack and run that motor this summer or till it's dead. Save up and buy a replacement OB in the off season.

I finally got the motor off of the boat today. Now I'm going to drag the boat 60 miles south,to a friends farm, and tear it apart.

Well..... The motor has been sold and a newer one located. It's a 1996 Johnson 90hp. The new transom is almost done. I have a question: Is JB weld the best way to fill extra holes in the skin of the transom. There must be 20. Pic included...

Yah, JB would work fine there, but if you can you'll want to slather some on the inside too (not just the outside). That way there is a good connection and it doesn't want to pop out.

That transom looks like the piece of metal my son was using for target practice last weekend, 22 and 410 holes.

Keep up the nice work and get that Mariner splashed.

Would 5200 work better, since the wood is already in and I can't get the JB inside?

Yah, in that case, yup. Just try to squeeze some inside the hole and do your best to wipe smooth with mineral spirits. 5200 is very difficult to sand smooth.

Re: 1972 Starcraft 21' Mariner (Split Windshield) Rebuild

personally Id think he would still be better off with JB weld than the thin coat of 5200 which never hardens...if putt eh JB on and leave it a little proud in a smooth mound... id even go in with a drill a little smaller than your hole and just peck the wooda slight bit and force the jb weld up into the wood just a tad...to help bite...when you paint it will look the same as if you used 5200 but i bet the paint will stick to the JB weld better than the 5200....

if you were going to sandwich a layer of wood over the outside...then Id go along with the 5200 being ok....but to leave it opne on a flat surface...

I am doing the same thing to my transom...lots of extra holes...but luckily I smeared the JB on both sides, as i havebnt installed the wood for the transom yet

good luck

Last Sunday went 220 miles and got the motor for the boat. 1996 Johnson 90 hp. Took the boat along and seller installed it for me. Yesterday I took my first look at the number plate on the motor... Model # XJ112SLEDR I plan on calling seller tomorrow. I didn't know they made a 112hp...

Yesterday (Tuesday) I got most of the floor taken out. The foam was soggy. As if I'm not slow enough already, last night while putting the tarp over the boat and standing on a 2X4 laid across a 5 gal. bucket, I slipped and fell into the gunwale. Have I mentioned I'm 5'10" and weigh 315lbs? Anyhow I think I cracked a rib. Walking and breathing are 2 things I can no longer do at the same time. Stay tuned for for our next exciting episode...

So wait....

Did you get an extra 22 horse out of that deal?

I suppose the bracket could have been swapped out. What does the button/plate ID# on the block say?

I'm assuming you cracked a rib in your chest vs. a rib in the boat, bummer:(

its a 112 hp SPECIAL.....like the 33 special and the 88 special....it usually doesnt come with a VRO pump....you have to pre mix.

but the kicker is I cant find that exact model number...the place i find the model numbers has a T after the 112 and before the S...which usually designate the crossflow model..

someone put another cover on the motor in the past.

good luck
