The 5/8" is to small. You need the 3/4 " nylock nut to start the flare. Once the tube starts to flare, you remove the nut, turn it around and use a flat washer to flatten the flaring out.

Thanks Wood. Should the dimensions for the bolt and nylock nut be the same size? In other words do I need to use a 3/4" bolt? Or should I be using a 5/8" bolt with 3/4" nylock nut?

TIA :)

Gotta be the same: 3/4" bolt w/ 3/4" nylock or you won't be able to tighten the nylock down on the bolt to flare the tube.

If you were doing a livewell drain the tube would probably be smaller around, and you'd need to use a smaller bolt & nylock.

Picked up one 3/4" bolt with 3/4" nylock nut. Will remove the plastic bit and attempt to flare the tube this weekend.

Hopefully will have a decent pic of flared tube to post later this weekend.

Cheers! And have a good one eh!

Remove the plastic bit?

To actually flare the drain tube, you've got the assembly done incorrectly in the pix you posted ^^^.

No washer on the TO BE flared end of the tube, and the round part of the nylock is facing IN towards the bolt head on the other end of the assembly.

Once you get the flare started w/ the slightly rounded head of the nylock, you remove the nylock, add the washer, then reinstall the nylock as you've got it pictured.

Yes I realize I need to re-position the nylock nut such that the round end when tightened will begin the flare on the non-flared tube end. Then turn the nylock nut and add the washer to complete the flare.

There is a plastic ring on the inside of the nylock nut that must be removed before the nut can be threaded onto the bolt in the direction described above.

Should have progress to report this weekend. :)

Re: 1970's 16 ft Aluminum Mackenzie Runabout Rebuild

In the end I sawed several cuts into the plastic ring and using a small screw driver knocked them off. With the nut bell housing turned toward the cap screw end the nut will now turn onto the bolt. Good. :)

I think I am close to installing the drain tube. When I put the pieces together where should the 5200 be used? On the inside diameter of both inside and outside rings?

The 5200 didn't work well with the rivets. I was able to peel off 5200 from the rivets ends - maybe it didn't cure well.

What temps are ideal?

Today it's around 20 Celsius or 59 Fahrenheit.

Thanks in advance! Have a good one eh!

Checked the 5200 tube. Cures best around 21 Celsius or 70 Fahrenheit. Should be ok for tomorrow.

Enjoy the rest of the weekend folks! :)

Went to install the drain tube and low and behold the 5200 was shot. Directions indicate 5200 must be used within 48 hours of opening. Last time I used the 5200 was for the rivets several months ago. Crap. :(

Ordered a larger tube of 5200 and while I was at it also ordered some Interlux Brightsides topside paint and thinner for the transom skin and splash well.

This means the transom will be installed this weekend. Still need to get a few things sorted out. Mounting hardware is at the top of my list.

Still interested to know where to apply the 5200 on the drain tube? Does it need to be applied to the outside of the drain tube to help seal the rings?

Have a great week eh! :)

I am looking at using carriage bolts to mount the transom brackets through the transom core. These are 1/4" x 2 1/2". Searched a bunch of threads and haven't found an example others used.

Coat the hole and the outside of the tube with the 5200 before inserting it. Cleanup with Acetone.;)

I see no problems with your bolt choice as long as it's Stainless steel.

The opposite side of the carriage bolt head is square before the threads begin. If the diameter of the bolt is 1/4" what maximum diameter should the holes be drilled? I will begin with a pilot hole and work-up to the maximum diameter.

5/16" then coat the bolts and the holes with either 3M 4200 or 5200 when you install. Clean Up with Acetone.

Finally got the drain plug installed. Proved to be a challenge with the home made flare tool. Using a pair of pinch-nose pliers I had to start the flare myself to help the nylock nut seat. Turned out pretty good I think. But certainly not the best tool for this job. I have two drain tubes to flare for the splashwell so I will have more practice with the process.

Got the transom brackets installed. Have a small issue with the rivets. Going to need larger grip range to properly grab the bracket. Had a couple on hand and got them installed.

And finally got the transom installed. Good!!!! Need to install the cmc mounting bolts with cmc, stern eyes and knee braces. But all the holes are drilled and ready for hardware. Knee braces feel real solid and seem like they're going to work well!

Applied 1st coat of below water line Interlux paint onto the transom. Hope to get at second coat next weekend.

Worked Friday evening, Saturday and Sunday until 8:30 pm. Never imagined things would take so long but with so little experience with this type of work I am happy with the results.

Have a good one folks!

Did you put a piece of hose in the drain tube to keep the bolt centered in it while tightening down the nylock nut?

No matter install looks good!

Gray does too.

Everything looks Nice. Being a wood worker, I use a piece of wood dowel and drill a centered hole to fit the bolt and the slip inside the drain tube to keep it nice and centered. Works great. I guess I need to take a pic of how to make one of these things!!! I got a LOT of thinkgs I need to take pics of!!!! Gettin Old and Lazeeee!!!

Thanks JB. Tried a thin piece of cardboard to secure the tube. Will try a piece of hose when I attempt the splashwell drain holes.

Going to need to use self-taping screws to fasten the knee braces to the stringers. The rivet tool is too large and won't fit into the small space.

I assume I should be using stainless steel. Any other suggestions?
