Re: 1969 Starcraft Chieftain Restoration

I worked all day last Sunday and I got the one side completely stripped.

On Thursday I came across another boat that was to good of a deal to pass.

1990 Stingray 22' bow rider with a Mercruiser 270 Magnum engine a 1998 Alpha 1 Gen 2 outdrive and the owner just put a whole new floor in it and did it right using West System resin,New foam, new transom and Duraback paint through-out.Shes solid and dry as a bone. The upholstery was all redone and this boat is turn key ready to rock. Also came with a Load-Rite dual axle roller trailer with surge brakes. I got this boat for 2K. The lady just needed money. Im still working on my Chieftain, but its so nice getting out on the water again. Ill get some pics up of both boats real soon...

Nice score on the water ready boat! I did the same thing myself, it's so nice being able to take the family on the lake and take my time to restore the Chieftain right.

Tonight I took the boat out for the first time. After about 30 minutes of making sure she was running good with no leaks, good oil pressure and the water temp was just right. I opened this baby up and she is pretty quick. I had her doing over 50mph with 3 people on board. If I had perfect flat water and just me on board I bet she would hit just under 60mph. Im so happy being out on the water again. This will surely keep me happy until I get the Chieftain done.

Here is a pic I snapped when we made a pit stop on the way home...

That is one big (and fast!) bowrider. Great score for $2K! :D Over here the trailer would be worth that much. :(

Wow! I just went through the entire thread and cant wait to see more! I just picked up a 1968 22' foot Chieftain and this has gotten me excited to see more! I think that i may have less problems with the paint and corrosion as it is a Lake superior boat. Keep the posts coming!!!!!!

Well Fall is here and the weather is nice and cool. Ill be working on her in the coming days. Shes going to get soda-blasted in 2 weeks. The paint has been the one big hurdle and detterent that has just taken too much of my time. I have the one side and the transom stripped, but I'm not looking forward to spending another 50+ hours on stripping the other side and the inside. I got an estimate of 400 bucks to have the entire boat stripped inside and out. After she is stripped I can finally start putting her back together. My old lady is getting mad and wants this boat done. This is the only boat I have ever owned that she totally loves and wants to get out on the water. Till then...

Thats a good deal. After stripping everything but below the water line by hand I would definately spend $400 to have it done for me.

Yah, I kinda think that is $400 well spent. Did that fancy Snap On tool wire wheel thingy not do the trick for ya?

It works great, but I have to use a stainless steel wheel on it that has to be sharpened every couple of minutes and there are allot of nooks and crannies that it just won't reach. I was planning on finishing it up with the tool, but I got to talking with a guy at the marina the other day and I mentioned my boat and the heck of a time I was having with removing the paint. He mentioned his brother who had a soda blasting business. This guy showed up the next day and said he would strip it all for 400 bucks. I had a guy earlier this year for six hundred but that was just the outside.

Where are these guys when you need them? I looked all over my area when I was about to strip the paint and couldn't find anyone -- anywhere. Found a couple businesses on websites in the region, but they didn't even respond to my inquiries. I must be small potatoes I guess.

$400 sounds like a bargain to blast the whole boat. I bought a small soda blaster fom HF and I"ll use it on the 12'.

I bought the 50lb soda blaster from HF also. It doesnt touch the paint on my boat but it sure does work on everything else though.Tide Water Sodablasting assured me they will get it off with their equipment no problem. I cant wait. They told me if I dropped it off at 7am that it will be done before lunch the same day. I waiting until the weather is clear and dry for an entire week till I get it done...

I thought about that unit when I did mine, glad I passed it up after seeing this. A few hours and $400 is a great deal, considering all the time, materials & elbow grease you'll be saving.
