Re: Its Alive!!!

Today I ripped apart a 2001 Bayliner and found a composite belly tank inside. After some cutting and swearing I got it out. I was going to use the aluminum tank I acquired earlier but I'm gonna go with this one. It is much, much lighter than the aluminum tank, plus I don't have to worry about corrosion in the future...

Hey, that is a nice score out of the sacrificial Bliner! 30ish gallons I am guessing.

Ya, Im surrounded by Snap-On tool boxes. There are over 100 tool boxes in the hangar where I work. I am partial to Matco tools though. Here is my collection of tool boxes. All full of Matco and specialized aviation tools. My drawers are all shadowed so if any tools are missing I can tell at a glance.

I must say I have been so overly impressed by your abilities and the great work you are doing.
However I am even more impressed by your choice of tools and toolboxes!!
Matco Tools Rock!

I will be happy if my boat turns out to be 10% as nice as yours looks.

Re: 1969 Starcraft Chieftain Restoration

I am really getting frustrated trying to remove the paint. I'm about ready to throw in the towel and take this baby to the recycle yard. Aluminum is fetching a hefty price right now. I have tried everything from the best paint stripper that money can buy to wire wheels and DA sanders. This paint is just too thick. Its like sanding concrete. I have priced out having it soda blasted and the cheapest price I found was 40 bucks a foot just for the hull and another 9 foot charge to do the roof and bow. thats about 1300 bucks. Thats what I paid for the boat.

I ordered a new tool today and I was assured that it will easily remove the paint and I bought special wheels for it so as not to harm aluminum. If this don't work Ill be searching for another boat...

I was just gonna say soda blasting, but I am with you. Hard to make sense spending that kind of money to get the paint off. I really hope that new tool does it for you Bruce!

I wonder why the stripper is so ineffective?

And to think I even gave my post a couple extra seconds of thought specifically in order to try to ward off the above post :p

Yeah you just can't get good strippers anymore. :p

Be careful with that tool so you don't put deep gouges in the aluminum.

Had a brand new paint job ruined from a leaky master cylinder once. The brake fluid bubbled it right up and off. Just a small $ thought but if strippers are similar chemically prolly a waste of time.

the stripper takes the paint off but it only eats down so far. On the transom it took around six applications to reach the aluminum. but on the sides and especially on the top surfaces, the paint is so thick that you can't see the rivet heads. I wander if this boat had a couple of loose rivets and was leaking a bit and old Joe tried putting the paint on so thick to remedy that.

On another note.

I got a call from another soda blasting company this morning. He said he could have my whole boat done in one day for 650 bucks. He wanted to know if I was able to bring it by today and he would have it done this evening. If this new tool does not work Its going to this guy...

Definitely!! $650.00 for a soda blasting job is a good price. (Not trying to spend your money or anything like that.)

Re: 1969 Starcraft Chieftain Restoration

I had close to the same thing with paint on my Starcraft not near as bad as yours though. It might have been some sort of epoxy or filler, but whatever the heck it was it was tough to get off. I ended up just giving up, and feathering everything so it looked decent. It was all on the bottom anyways. It sure was a grunt of a job just to do the small area that I did. If paint falls off then I will do it the right way and take it to someone to soda blast it. I usually like to do things right, but I had to give up ...

Can't wait to see your progress on the boat, I sure hope you end up keeping her. You do great work!

Re: 1969 Starcraft Chieftain Restoration

I,m getting pretty excited about this Crud-Thug gizmo. I ordered the stainless steel wheels made for aluminum and it looks like it works really well.It will be here next Thursday. I have read allot of reviews and they are pretty positive. I am even more excited that if this does fail the Snap On guy said he will take it back no questions asked. I am also glad that I have an affordable option #2 of soda blasting just in case. Today I got to peeling off all the vinyl on the roof and I am very happy with the way its turning out. The vinyl is coming off in nice big pieces and the glue comes right off with one pass of the wire wheel leaving nice clean aluminum behind. I will get pics up soon...

I know this video is not in english but it gets the point accross.
