Damn man. Nice tool selection. Where was that thing when I did my boat. That looks like it would have knocked days off of putzing with glue removal.

Re: 1969 Starcraft Chieftain Restoration

Hey guys. I just found this site yesterday, and read everything so far on the build of the chieftain. Alpheus seems to know his stuff, I wish I had the resources at my disposal that he has. This article is really interesting to me because I just bought a 1970 chieftain and brought it home last friday. I am not doing anything close to what he is doing with his, just rewiring and a new interior set up. I also have the baby s**t green everwhere in mine, even the original seats that are in good usable condition. I love the setup of the islander that is shown on here, and I think that is what I will mimmick with mine. Keep up the awesome work and please don't scrap her Alpheus. She has alot of life left, especially in your hands. You will conquer that paint. I think that "joe" used aluminum roof coating that is used to reseal mobile home roofs on this hull. You might want to look in this direction for removal.

The new stripper is working awesome. I will make a video of it real soon. The thicker the paint the better it works. Im waiting for replacement wheels for it. I have the whole one side completely done. I was so worried about getting the real thick stuff on the bottom off but like I said the thicker it is the better it works. This tool is worth its weight in gold...

Those would be neat if that was the color scheme I was going for. I'm afraid all of the green thats gonna be in the boat will concealed under the engine cover...

It looks just like mine. If you get it make sure you get a good sharpening stone. Yes this tool rips the paint off but they do dull down in a matter of minutes. The good news is, is that it only takes running the wheel in reverse over a sharpening stone for 30 seconds to sharpen it back up.

I have been using the crud thug to remove the very thick paint on the hull and then using the DA sander to remove the original paint. The other day I was at Harbor Freight and I bought the 40lb soda blaster. It was on sale for 149 bucks and I was able to use a 20% off coupon on top of that. I also purchased a 50lb bag of medium grade soda. This baby takes the original paint off very, very fast. If my boat didnt have this thick cement like paint on it I could have had it stripped in one day and with about 3 bags of soda. It works awesome and leaves a perfectly clean paintable surface. I am very happy with this soda blaster. The best part is, is when Im done I just hose off my drive way and all the soda washes away. I will get picks up soon...

Worth its weight in gold...

Thanks for the feed back guys. The search is on.
Alpheus - Check out my resto and give me your opinion; do you think I could get away with just the soda blaster?

I would just use a DA sander, smooth out the the surface and apply paint over what you got. The only reason I am stripping mine down is because of the very thick textured paint that "old Joe" put on there. Get the small soda blaster to clean out the paint from around the rivets and to get into all the nooks and crannies that the DA cant get to...

Re: 1969 Starcraft Chieftain Restoration

workin. Its been hard to work on the boat because of my new work schedule. I work from 4:30pm till 1:00 am. Its hard to go outside and make allot of noise at 1am. I just finished working on my truck today so I will have time to start on the boat pretty quick on my days off...
