Re: 1969 Larson - Big Project

1. Noted on the PB fillet size. I'll size down on my bulkheads.

2. Also noted on fillet and glassing in tandem. Logistically a bit challenging, but again I'll give it a shot at bulkhead time.

3. I had been using the blue wonders for gloves. I'm trying something new now that so far is better.

4. I like the tyvec suits when grinding. However... I'm a big enough guy that whenever I bend over they rip. (I have pitcher's butt). Not ideal, but wearing Carhartt jeans, a good long sleeve shirt, and gloves seems to be effective. I do more laundry, but don't rip clothes. I need to look for a protective suit that is a bit more forgiving!

5. I do have a soak. What I haven't bothered to grab yet is a squeegee or scraper for my rollers. I am saving my brushes now though. When I get some more roller refills I'm going to grab a paint scraper to help with cleaning them off.

6. Funny you should mention that... the second I got my material order I realized that I could make my own with scissors or probably my industrial shredding machine. Oh, well. Gotta use it now!

7. Yup

8. I did in fact make a jig of my front keel and noted the deck height on the transom during tear down. I didn't have a traditional stringer system, so I'm making one up. The more challenging part is replicating the deck height relatively accurately.

As you may recall, I had that weird foam layer on the sides of the hull that extended onto the deck. This made marking the deck height side-to-side basically impossible. However, I know I can get the stringer height correct using my jigs and transom markings. Theoretically, I should be able to use strings side-to-side off the stringer tops to mark out a new deck template... we'll see how that goes!

And yes, I can't figure out how to use the multi-quote tool! Back to it!

Re: 1969 Larson - Big Project

I do have a good question before I get started today...

Since I was able to note the TOP of my deck height I have a good starting point. But, I actually haven't thought about material for the actual deck yet. The original decking looked to be 1/2". Should I be using 1/2" or something larger? It isn't a huge deck, and in the end it is going to have a bunch of support.

And, depending on decking material, how much height should I take off the stringers to accommodate for glass and wood thickness of the deck?

Re: 1969 Larson - Big Project

Stringers cut to height, deck successfully mapped, and bulkheads cut and glassed.

However, computer broken, internet on the Fritz, and local 3g service down. I am disconnected!

Tomorrow gluing bulkheads in (after I lay out drainage), and hopefully making deck templates. Then, on to tabbing and glassing stringers and bulkheads!

I've tried to use the solar flare excuse at work before with mixed results.

BUT... It looks like I'm connected again! Computer problem caused by the internal BIOS battery going bad. Go figure.

Weekend progress pics coming...

Weekend update... now that I'm reconnected.

Saturday:

It took me a bit to get the stringers figured out as far as height, but I got it. It took me most of the day to decide what to do and cut them down. Ultimately, I knew where the top of the deck was at the transom, and had a template for the bow, so I was able to string it out. Turned out dead level!

And, I did some sanding of some of the PB as stringer cleanup that made one heck of a mess, both in the boat and garage!

The garage is mostly a result of me mind*%!$ing myself over the process.

Sunday next...

Re: 1969 Larson - Big Project

Another weekend objective was to get bulkheads cut and in. This was MUCH easier with the stringers in place and level. First, I had to come up with a drainage solution for the chine lines in the bulkheads... 1" PVC, cut in half.

P1030328.jpg

I got the PVC halves placed and glued in. Here is the layout before tabbing...

P1030332.jpg

Incidentally, I forgot to mention in the previous post that I decided to subtract about 3/4" from the height of the stringers and bulkheads to accommodate for glass and deck height.

AND, some very useful information... someone mentioned in a prior response that my tabs were a bit large. I found a GREAT solution for spreading your PB: use half of a 1" PVC tube! Actually 1.25-1.5" might be a bit better. But I found it to be amazingly effective.

My only weekend drawback: it was HOT HOT HOT. I was mixing my resin at about 3/4%, and it still set up ULTRA quick. I had to work in small batches, really fast. Needless to say, I'm going to have some sanding to do. No big deal.

P1030334.jpg

Good sized tabs... about 3/4" or so. Messy... thanks heat. But they're in! Should make pouring foam easy later on, as well as nice and solid!

I left my bow bulkhead out while I figure out a drainage method for it. I'll get that in tonight. Then time for some sanding and acetone in preparation for some real glassing!

Well, I did manage to get my bow head in last night. No sanding yet. Neighbor was sick in bed and needed a break from me. Bummer.

Thinking one step ahead, a question: to wax or not to wax the final layer on my stringers?

Sanding mostly done on the stringers tonight. Perhaps a bit of touch up, but basically ready for an acetone bath. Also getting some glass cut.

Do you see your stringers ? If you have places that your do see them at some point .. are you going to paint/gel them ?

If not then dont bother with the wax IMO.

Noted.

I now have another problem to deal with though: my neighbor is officially irritated with my project and has requested that I move it somewhere else. Bummer. The glory of owning a townhouse.

Time to find a place to set up shop.

May have found a garage to rent ON THE CHEAP! Wish me luck. Or don't. Doesn't matter.

Re: 1969 Larson - Big Project

So the garage rental was suitable. Certainly more spacious than my tent. Gotta keep the neighbors happy!

I'm going to have to move and re-setup shop for probably at least a few days, but it looks like I'm back in business! I guess I'll use my little break in actual repairs to move things, restock on some resin (definitely going to run out), and get MY garage back in shape.

More to follow soon!

I MIGHT have to go fishing once or twice.

Good start on "shop" setup tonight. New off-site man cave. Sweet.

Re: 1969 Larson - Big Project

Finally moving the boat to the new shop tonight. With some luck, I might be able to resume actual work this weekend!

I was really hoping to finish this bugger this summer, but finding the time and resources has proved challenging! New objective: all glass work done before the snow falls!

At least then I can get some work done over the winter on things that don't require higher temps!
