I have had to replace the throttle control gear and throttle control pinion. Now my throttle on the tiller is extremely tight and I can’t get motor to run anyway but wide open. Any suggestions what might be causing this?

In my opinion there is usually no issue with those parts.-----I can not see or feel these parts on your motor.-----It should be a simple fix !

Not sure what the issue may be without seeing it but I know my motors of the same vintage had sticky throttles that were hard to turn/adjust. I cleaned the throttle arm assembly and re-greased…The old grease gets hard especially if it’s cold outside. Disassembly the handle and clean/grease up seems to help a bit. Also check that your plug wires aren’t getting bound up when the armature moves etc. Your issue may be something else as you say it only runs at WOT. If your issue is with turning the throttle , then I would suggest looking at everything when you turn it and see what’s holding it up…

I would sell the 25 horse and replace it with a 10 horse. You would still zoom around at a decent speed, but you would not need a kicker.
the kicker is back-up in case he breaks a oar on the way back :)

Thanks for the insight. I’ll take everything apart and clean it see how it goes back together

I am having trouble breaking these pinions, I’m wondering if my throttle is supposed to move this little or not? I broke it trying to get my motor to throttle down. I could only get it to run on high gear.

Very common problem here in salt water land. Remove the big gear, then drive out the plastic bushing. Clean the corrosion out of the hole that the bushing came out of. Grease everything upon reassembly.

Pull the flywheel and check if coils are set correctly !!------They used that pinion and gear for over 20 years ( many models ) and there is nothing wrong with the design of it.

A bit more information: I maybe a complete moron and have no clue what I’m doing or I’ve got a weird problem with the motor… in neutral I can’t adjust the idle…reverse I can adjust it some and drive I can adjust it pretty well. The throttle control gear moves freely, so it is working fine when I unattached it from the throttle above:

that is how the throttle works on most outboards.

because reving the motor in neutral is a good way to destroy it.

Under the flywheel is the timing plate moving freely or is everything gunked up up there?

Prefect! Thanks. This whole thing has been 100% user error then. I’m trying to idle down in neutral putting unnecessary force in the throttle handle causing these pinions to break. I ordered the third one in a month.

I should only use neutral when I have it in “start” and can’t idle it down. Idle down if for forward and reverse

You can idle down in nutruel so I do not understand. Something is blocking it from working correctly.

Something is amiss.---Post pictures of interlock bar on starboard side of the motor.------I have never seen that throttle gear break.-----Let alone 3 times on the same motor.----Have you pulled the flywheel for inspection ???----Or perhaps time to visit a shop , if there is one that works on older motors in your area.

I haven’t pulled flywheel off yet. I don’t have a puller for it. Been home with my son whose 12 months, so I’ve just been tinkering with motor while he’s been sleeping today. Haven’t had time to do a full deep dive into it yet.

I took the motor over to a guy in my area this past weekend to have him do some work on this motor, and he reported the throttle worked just fine for him. I was having trouble with getting it into reverse and had him test the seals of the lower unit.
