That’s exactly what I saw on multiple manufactures sites before I bought this boat. I thought it should have plenty of weight capacity for us, But jims123 says that we’ll be over weight. I’m new to learning about boats, so is there something obvious that I am missing?
I said nothing about being overweight. I said the boat wasn't safe with that many occupants.

You can mandate that the wife stay where you tell her. Little kids often want to move around. Dogs have a mind of their own. You have a narrow flat bottom boat. It will be movement sensitive. You have shallow freeboard. On top of that your bimini is going to act like a sail and give you even less stability.

Add up all the weights and see how close you come. Weight might be yet another concern.

If you didn’t replace the plugs since you got it, I would do so . Clean those old ones up a bit and use for backups on your on boat “repair kit”. Champion J6C like I posted earlier is what I find works best. Also, you stated you haven’t had it on the water yet….make sure you never start that motor dry. If starting on land, put it in a barrel with enough water etc.
thermostat : if it was a motor I just picked up, I would pull it, inspect, clean if junk on it, and test in a bowl full of almost boiling water. If it opens in the hot water and closes once submerged in cold water…it’s working. I would replace the seal if it’s crusty and replace the thermo if it’s not functioning. Cheap fix and piece of mind. Once again, I’m no expert and others may know more than me. That’s just what I did and seems to work

That’s is something I’ve never even considered. I appreciate you bringing that up! I’ve only been out with 2 people in my 14x36, so this will be much more interesting with 4-5 of us on the water. I’ll have to be mindful of the weight shifts. Thanks for looking out man

Well----When folks say that they have " good spark " it means very little.-----A good magneto will produce up to 28,000 volts.----That will jump a gap of 5/16" with a snap you can hear.----Does your jump a gap of 5/16" , yes or no ?
You can also tell from the color of the spark, blue is hot but yellow is weak !! Not as good as testing the gap but if you have a yellow spark it can be a sign of it being weak...

Your passengers will need to understand they cant always sit where they want to, sometimes they need to sit where the boat will be balanced properly ! As the captain, your job is to figure where each one sits to get the safest operation even though your passengers may not like where you put them !!

Lots of great information on this sight for sure! Other than the service manual is there any place with a "checklist" of things to check out on for my motor. Like everything that I need to look at to make sure it is 100% good to go.

I found an awesome little 1968 Johnson 6 HP long shaft motor! This thing starts on the second pull and runs really well. I'm going to put a new impeller on it and get her on the water. We have a HP restricted lake around here, and the stretch of river that I fish isn't very big. Ill be excited to get it out!

Those 6 HP are one the best / simples most reliable they ever made.----One weakness is the bearing surface on the driveshaft / bushing above the pinion gear.-----Make sure you use the proper oil.

You don't need a kicker, you need a bigger boat. Your Jon isn't safe with that many occupants.
Two adults a baby and two dogs is overweight ?? Not on a 16' jon boat, probably has a 1000 lb capacity. I have a 2.2 hp Merc as a kicker on my 16 Sylvan side console, works great for trolling then a remote electric on the front, can steer by pushing a button..

Update on my 25: I've run it in a bucket a few times, and she's running like a wet dream. Shifting smoothly in and out of reverse. I put some NGK B7S plugs in it to see if the motor will start a little better. Ill order the champion J6C when i can. So far so good with the NGK. Throttle adjustment, and she's idling well.

That's probably a reasonable place to start. I do have both oars and an electric trolley motor
When you take a friend along with you and you have an engine problem, you will have two " horsepower" to get you back. LOL...
