Re: 1968 Starcraft Jupiter - Rebuild

Thanks Guys! Spent some time really cleaning up and cleaning out the garage. Built a couple of tri-pod to drape a tarp across to ensure no water/snow gets in for the week. Also looked the boat over in much more detail... while the kids played with the manual windscreen wiper!! Overall... I like it!:D It just seams to be alot more solid. My wife even thought it could be fixed up nicely!:):)

So... it begins (again). Plan is to remove the motor on the weekend and get the boat back into the garage and begin the "stripping" process.

Getting ahead of myself a bit here... but what epoxy resin options are recommended? Ballpark what is the coverage per gallon? I had a reputable company up here tell me that 1 gallon covers 35 sq ft --- or roughly 1 sheet of ply @ $150 per gallon... gets pricy quickly!

Nice score - I beleive the object on your deck behind the bow light is either a 1960's death ray/xray machine optioned out once in a while or a hifi audio warning device

Don't know the coverage but this is the stuff.

IM - Good news having the wife onboard, that's priceless. And starting over again I think you much better bones this time. Good building! :D

GA - She looks great, IM. Your old windshield will look good on her. And I wanted to see pics of you and your car buried in snow drifts.

Thanks GA! I am thinking the old windshield as well... Will have to put it on the boat and see when I get to that point. Snow... there was enough! But alas, I managed thankfully to stay on the road!

Oh wow, that photo at the scrap yard is a heat breaker man
All the same, looks like you scored a nice one there!

Thanks Jas! I couldn't look back! It was the right thing to do. Moving forward now!

Cool little boat! I like that hand operated wiper.

Thanks RH! Works like a charm that little wiper!

Much appreciated SC65! --- Death ray... probably not!!! But a horn yes!! I'll keep it... it's cool retro.

Bwana Don - US composites... good prices and after reading some more other forums, seams to be a good, reasonably priced choise.

IM - Good news having the wife onboard, that's priceless. And starting over again I think you much better bones this time. Good building!

GA - She really has been great --- especially given that I have taken over her parking spot in the garage and totally trashed our back covered porch with everything I didn't need (or couldn't leave in the garage to fit the boat in and work on it)!!! I even got a one liner on the trailer the other day --- "It looks surprisingly good!" "You can leave it on the driveway now." It was hidden behind the garage!

Great find. That 65 should be a fantastic motor for that hull. I used 3 gallons on my deck. I have a bigger boat so I think 3 gallons would do your deck + the transom easily. Got it here http://www.clarkcraft.com/cgi-suppli...a65448a569d333 for obviously much cheaper (US $)

Ez - Thanks. Really happy with it. Ya... right now I have 3 motors to choose from... a 60, 65, and 90 hp ... all Johnson's. Thanks for resin info... much cheaper.

Barato... thanks!!! It wasn't easy to test lemme tell you!!!! No pics, sorry:)

Re: 1968 Starcraft Jupiter - Rebuild

A reasonably busy last couple of days. Goals were to get the motor off the boat and stored in the garage and to get the boat in the garage off the trailer. I ended up getting more done... some out of necessity (boat was too heavy to get off the trailer on my own) and some cause I got rolling!

It started on Friday night... built an engine hoist out of some scrap wood and metal bits lying around. It ain't pretty (referring to the hoist not my mug shot :)...

IMG_1379.jpg

My had dropped by... it was great to have another set of hands to help... full shot of the motor still on the boat and hooked up to the hoist...

IMG_1378.jpg

Everything went pretty we'll... I really need to have a solid wheel at the end of the boom as the come-a-long bound up preaty good. Ah well... it worked!

Re: 1968 Starcraft Jupiter - Rebuild

With the motor off and stored away... got down to business. Got the seats, and sides removed.

Got the splashwell out cleanly with no issues this time. Removed the rear floor and some of the styrofoam. I guess a little snow had got in and the main pieces in the center are currently fused to the floor.

Then I removed the gas tank and the stand the tank was sitting on. Original OMC tank -- 24 US gal!!! Pretty large... not too bad of shape actually. There was some leakage at the top where the filler pipe joined the tank. Other than that, look pretty good. Had about 2 gallons of fuel in it.

Then removed the floor boards. They came out cleanly... good for templates. Much of the styrofoam was in mint shape... like it was brand new. No water absorption or deterioration whatsoever. I then cleaned up and put much of the good stuff on my covered porch. The side panels are also in great shape.

IMAG0089.jpg

With the load lightend considerably, I hook the trailer and boat to the car and was able to push, pull and lift the boat off the trailer onto my dollies. With some effort, I was able to get the boat into the garage, ready for the phase. It really feels now like things are in motion... transom comes out next and with some heat in the garage, the rest of the styrofoam should come out as well. Then cleanup and removal of the windshield and other bits so that I can flip the boat over.

IMAG0090.jpg

I also was able to re-store my trailer behind the garage. Using a system of ramps and just plain old dragging the tongue and a lot of grunting, I was able to get it up the stone stairs and a 18" rock wall so that it is out of the way for the rest of the winter. Note to self, need a better system! :) Overall, got some stuff done. Feel good that things are in motion again and in the right direction.

You're making good progress, IM. I bet that OMC tank is a rare commodity. 24 gal. is probably a month of gas. LOL

Any signs of pitting so far? You know I'm hoping the answer is NO!

Re: 1968 Starcraft Jupiter - Rebuild

ya, 24 gal is a lot... we are running over $5 a gallon... so it would be a few bucks to fill it up too!!

Nooo pitting. Although I did find 1 rivet head near the transom on the hull was sheared off... but an easy fix. Otherwise the hull looks to be in great shape!

Good news IM. See, it's easier the second time around. Just too bad you have a second time. But JII just looks better to me.

That hull looks just great. Even better than my '66 did. If I had to chose a motor for it from your collection, the only logical choice is the Stinger restored with it's hot orange color :)

Much, much easier round II. Also helps when what is being removed is in reasonably good nic... not completely rotted out or otherwise destroyed!

Thanks Dozer... That's makes this site great... so many ideas and tales of how to get things done. In this case for me, I had most of what I needed. For a few bucks, I was able to build a hoist vs buying a new or used one. Is the best option. Nope. Did it work. Yup!

Thanks Ez! It is looking pretty good so far... nothing like Jup I. Ahhhh... after this mornings conversation with my wife, I a pretty sure it will be the 90!! It is basically the 90 or bust! She really likes the smoothness of it, the fact that it will cruise all day at 3000 rpm, quitely at 25 mph and the most important fact ---- she is tolerating the mess! :D Despite the fact that I grew up with (and my father still has) a 70 Evinrude... I am pretty sure it's goin-a be the 90.

But I do think the orange would look good with flames!!! :) :) :)

Ok question... why are others not using Marine Spar Varnish to seal up the floors and transom's? It's cheaper, oil based and should protect for years --- especially if it is covered in vinyl or marine carpet. Just curious. Personal preference perhaps?
