There ya go, IM. Usually the MOB gnashes it's teeth and refuses to say the "S" word. In the few times a hull went to Tinny Heaven it was well deserved after giving it's soul to abusive. non-caring owners. You tried to keep the ole gal alive, but the time for life support is over. God Save the Juniper. Long live Juniper II.

Forgot to ask or don't remember - What did you find?

Juniper II is a....... Jupiter!!! Juniper I(rest it's aluminum hull) will be donating parts to juniper II. I also have two windshields --- a curved and wedgy glass screen. Now the choice... which to put on??!!!

Thanks again guys for your thoughts and advice. It feels like the correct direction now.

Look at EZ's Jupiter resto. He put a walk-thru WS on his instead of the plexi with the small vent in the center. Long Live The Jupiter!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: 1968 Starcraft Jupiter - Rebuild

got some work done today. I need to get an old boat trailer I have rebuilt for next weekend when i go pick up J2. Right off the bat i have a bad bearing... actually, as it turns out i have 2 totalled bearings and 2 damaged bearings. The result is a damaged axle race? and an ovalized axle hub. Also, the axle was mounted above the springs which i thought was a bit odd.

It's a bit hard to tell from the photo, but the picture with the wheel, still has the hub attached to it and is ovalized. In the end, i bit the bullet and bought a new axle assembly as i was not able to find the inner bearing as it is a non std size, and the axle was badly damaged.

Another interesting feature of the trailer is the safety chains.... it is a dog chain!!!

IMG_20120105_201718.jpg

Needless to say, it has been replaced with proper chains. Also did the wiring, installed new bunks, bunk brackets, sanded the trailer, and primed it today. i forgot to take a final picture today with the bunks installed... oops!

I also need the trailer to drop of J1 to the recycler :( So far the best price I have got per pound is 53 cents. Not sure what a bare hull weights... but I guess I will find out soon enough. Kinda figure around 250 to 300 lbs. The fenders look lik top hats... i will need to adjust those in the future. Looks the the trailer has had a lift kit installed!!!

IM, did you strip all the good stuff off J1. Bow caps, end caps and all the rub rail rubber. Those are rare commodities today. And the running lights too. Sorry about the axle but you'll be better off in the long run. EZ is right on - Trailers are Devil spawn.

Devils spawn... I like that one! Agreed. I will be finishing stripping the last of the parts off J1 tomorrow and this week. Rub rails, bow cap and rear end caps. Otherwise just a shell at this point. Gotta make room. Starting to get crowded.

Re: 1968 Starcraft Jupiter - Rebuild

Ok. Much stuff happening.... Sorry no pictures --- forgot my Tablet today.

Mis-judged the distance from the rollers to the bunks for the angle of the boat. Thus, I lowered the (well almost completed the lowering) of the trailer beds. Much of this is because the outer rails on the bottom of the boat sit on the bunks as the trailer is quite narrow. I have a couple of holes to still drill and then just re-attach the bunk to the trailer. I snapped a 3/8" bit last night --- I hit some hardened steel... it bound and snap it went...I had a bit too much pressure on the drill. So I bought an expensive cobalt bit today and will use a lot less pressure.

All of the bits are now stripped off of SC1 (Jupiter 1). Rub rails, nose cap, all metal bits I wanted to keep. Tonight it goes up on the trailer ready to roll.

Sat - SC1 goes to the scrap, and I pickup Starcraft 2 (SC2)!! Going to be brisk --- roughly 0 F. I have to transfer the boat from a trailer to blocks to my trailer --- in a field, in the snow with a 2 wheel drive car. What could possibly go wrong! :) Pictures to follow!!

I am quite stoked to get phase 2 going and moving forward (sort of --- I have to rip much out first) again!!

Jupiter 1 left home this morning... all loaded up and stripped down:

Was dropped off at the scrap yard. A moment of silence was held...:(
Interesting note: It weighed in at exactly 300 lbs.

The drive north with the rebuilt trailer was smooth as silk. No issues whatsoever. Lights worked. Trailer tracked straight. Car ran fine.

Re: 1968 Starcraft Jupiter - Rebuild

Arrived at the seller's house and got to work. Rick the seller, had the boat on blocks. However, my back roller on the trailer would not go under the boat. So we un-hitched the trailer, lifted the tongue of the trailer up in the air and hooked the roller under the front of the hull. We then attached the witch cable to the eye hook of the boat and began to winch the trailer under the boat --- slowly. Little by little the trailer worked it's way under the boat with the keel sliding from roller to roller. With less then 2 feet to go, the boat was perfectly balanced on the trailer. We re-coupled the trailer to the car and winched the boat the last foot and a bit. Worked like a charm! :D

Drove back home without incident.

Couple of shots of the boat --- sorry if the quality is lacking --- but it was pitch black outside by the time we got home:

It has a had cranked windshield wiper of all things!! It also has some kind of box on the front deck behind the bow light. I haven't a clue what it is yet... anybody got any ideas from the picture?

AM Radio -- it works. As does the speedo.

Pretty clean inside compared to the other Jupiter...

On board bow gas tank! Not sure if this works... but pretty cool.

IMG_1373.jpg

65 hp Stinger "Mean Machine" motor. Works. Prop is brand new. Motor apparently runs great. We shall see.

Seats are not in great shape. But I have another set!

That's it for tonight. I will see if I can get a video tomorrow and do a walk around in daylight. Have a great night!

Re: 1968 Starcraft Jupiter - Rebuild

And JII is home. She looks great, IM. Your old windshield will look good on her. And I wanted to see pics of you and your car buried in snow drifts. Alas, all went well - glad for that.

That thing behind the bow light looks like it might be a spotlight. And the tank up front is a good place. On a closed bow smaller boat that is pretty much wasted space so that's a plus. I think EZ's Jupiter tank was under the bow. The windshield is worth money on eBay or CL - even with the hand crank wiper. LOL. I think you done good, IM.
