Re: 1968 Starcraft Jupiter - Rebuild
Okay, I know your polly out in the garage sucking paint fumes Jim but hows the paint job coming along??? The masses are waiting
Ya man!! Da Fumes! Da Fumes!!! Actually... they weren't as bad as I thought... largely cause I had both barn doors wide open!
Well this is how it went down... I rode to work and back on Friday... normally not a big deal but with the humidex it was a rather warm 94 F... and after 30 miles I was plum tuckered out!! Specially for the start of the riding season... the heat will knock it right out of me! Anyways, my wife was kind enough to pick up the etching primer and the Johnson OEM paint from the marine that isn't on water in the afternoon. After we got the kiddies to bed, I went out and etched and primed the bow and gunwales. It had cooled a bit and the humidity... well it was less but not really ideal.
This morning is where the fun began. I mixed the paint with acetone --- roughly 25% acetone and 75% paint. It was fairly watery. I mixed in a bucket -- roughly a quart's worth. After some experimentation on a piece of cardboard, I got at it. Put down a light coat. Waited about 20 minutes or so and put down another. Couple things I learned:
1. Never paint whilst your neighbor is using a leaf blower!! Ooops! A little bit of plant bits got stuck in the paint!!!
2. 1 quart would likely do the hull!!! I had about 3/4 of a quart left!!! More on that in a bit!
3. I'm not really that good at this painting stuff... did my best... and I guess that's all I can ask for really!!
4. I got really hot in the monkey suit and full face mask.... so some sweat dripped on the wet paint. This didn't go particularly well!!! But I thought... ahhh well. That's what you get sometimes for free!! So I kinda wiped it up and laid down a bunch of spray. Came out pretty good. We'll see long term on that one!!! Yikes!
5. The color chosen I thought would have been darker but came out lighter than I thought... Yup went Blue... just thought it would go well with what a lady friend of my wife called the interior as "warm tones" (whatever the heck that means!!!) Looks good in the dark though!
Not done hear guys.. so hang with my long windedness!! So after about an hour I went out and looked at the job... it was ok... or ok'ish. I made the decision for better or worse to lay on another coat. It was still really tacky, so thought why not. Filled only the canister this time and really hit it... drained the canister and this is how it turned out folks:
Not bad for the price of a sprayer... Not pro though. Good enough for me though.
Also got the bubble aluminum pretty shiney... tomorrow is the plastic cleaning:
Gotta give Starcraft credit: The stuff really was built tough. Properly tough. 45 years old and still going.
Have a great weekend (regular or long) fellas!!!
