Thanks Kneezer!!

Ok, couple more shots from this aft's puttering... with a test fit of the windshield...

Truth be told, I have never been a big fan of the "bubble"... but it has grown on me. Given that the wooden dash pad is setup for the "bubble"... it'll stick --- at least for a while!

Either way, it looks more complete with a windshield!!

Jim - I thought you were re-doing a tinny? From the new pics with the windshield (Yes - it belongs on J2) it looks like you have re-done a wood boat. With "warm tones" of course. :D

GA - you are so right there man!!! I was thinking the same thing tonight --- staring at her thinking "how am I going go fishing in you"!!! But alas, it's going to get used as a fishing boat, a cruiser and as ski boat. What's the point otherwise!! Besides --- scratched it today... so were good to go now!

My folks dropped by tonight to take a peak --- and my father says to me "so... when are we starting the Falcon?". My response was "well it depends"... soon if I had it my way.... "a little later" if my wife had hers"!! I have some plans for that one... should be interesting... less wood though! --- but keeping it Starcrafty.

Jas - thanks man. Kinda became unique like so many do here!

I gotta get one of those purple/white stern lights! Is there a law that says all the modern boat toys have to look so Wal-marty and lame? One suggestion, however. You may need a pet security gator to keep in the boat to keep the prying eyes and hands at bay! Be sure you take lots of pictures in this state. She'll never be this purty again! I keep pics of my boat on my phone to show them to people like she was my kid. LOL. I have issues. Congrats again on the sweet new toy! When's the splash date?

Not even on the water yet and first scratch. :( Just another rat fishing boat - NOT. It was going to happen, sooner than later in this case. Let me guess - one of the four W/S mount bolts or the one of the two supports.

I've yanked my W/S two times so far. Fortunately no new paint to scratch but every time I've put it back I said to myself it was going to be bad if and when I lay down fresh paint. I tried taking the side supports off and gave up cause I was afraid of busting that 46 year old plexi. I am thinking about some type of gasket or pad under the side supports because they are so rough.

Psst - I won't tell anyone your new paint has a boo-boo. ;)

Thanks man! Not sure that gator's like the snow though.... agreed on the wal-martness of man boats these days. Many are build to a price and look basically the same. Most rebuilders here do something a little different to make their boat unique in some way... and it's possible to do by basically any backyard builder! Heck, if I can do it, truly anyone can!!

Splash date - still on track for Fathers day. Big hurdle left - getting the motor and trailer down from the lake and getting the 90 off the other boat and on to the starcraft. Not sure what to use as a lift hook as there are none on the 90 if I recall correctly.

I don't know why this style windshield gets a bad rep @ the SC rebuilds. I LOVE it! The cut outs on either side & the curves of the frames compliment the slight crown in the bow! That crown is what makes fitting a 'modern' squared off frame a challenge anyway.

On a closed bow SC this would be my preferred style windshield. Of course, I haven't tried to fab a replacement plexi WS for if/when this 1 needs to be done either, so matching the bubble & curves might be extremely difficult w/ flat stock plexi.

Great looking! Love that 3/4 view shot of the dash & windshield! Father's day will be here soon enough, best of luck getting to splash. There might be a lift ring hiding along the back side of the motor, else a tow strap carefully wrapped & hooked to a hoist is an option. Both of my Johnson's have 1, as does the Evinrude, a 1969 J, '61 E & a '73 J.

Morning Jim, really like the looks of the the windshield imho it really suits the look of the boat. For lifting the 90 I built a lifting plate out of 1/2"steel with and eye threaded in the center, they say you can use a harmonic balnacer puller as well if you can find an eie to thread in the center. The puller just bolts to the three threaded holes in the top of the fly wheel, but use grade eight bolts and not to long sa they could go into the electrics under the fly wheel. Don't know what it would cost but I could send you mine to use?

Thanks man!!! After spending 2 hours of quality struggle time installing the windshield this AM, I really am bonding with it!! It's growing on me a lot... now it's installed and ready to go. The list is getting shorter!!

I used a lift plate made for lifting a V8 by the intake. I just drilled new holes to line up with the threaded holes on top of the flywheel. It works good with no issues yet. I am going to use it again in the next few weeks to install my 1985 Johnson 115 onto my 1966 Starcraft Jupiter that I am restoring. (maybe too much power?)

Thanks JC --- Makes sense what you are saying... as for a 115 on a Jupiter... well it's pushing it! I figured a 90 was plenty!

Only reason I am going with a 115 on the Jupiter is because I already have it.
I bought a 1975 Starcraft American 16 for $200. The boat needs the floor & stringers replaced but came with the 1985 Johnson 115 & a decent trailer. The 115 was not running due to someone attempting and failing to eliminate the VRO by swapping in an electric fuel pump and also hacking up the wiring. I replaced the fuel pump, starter, fuel primer, and repaired the wiring and now it runs great.

I bought the 1966 Starcraft Jupiter off ebay for $531.23 shortly after and it still had it's original 60hp Evinrude SportFour. The Evinrude had been well maintained and used only in fresh water but had been winterized & stored for many years. I attempted to start it but am getting no spark. I know nothing about the magneto ignition system on this motor. I may tinker with it to see if I can get it running. Either way, I plan on using the Jupiter primarily in salt water and really don't want to expose that classic Evinrude to that environment.

I have had several people tell me that my 1985 Johnson 115 is actually the same motor as the 1984 Johnson 140. Something about them changing the rating from flywheel to prop that year? I may be putting too much power on the Jupiter but at least the engine will have an easy life pushing such a light boat. I will have to control myself with the throttle.

Re: 1968 Starcraft Jupiter - Rebuild

Hey JC - ya I have the 90 on a barely 14 foot ski boat... it does one thing --- goes really fast... but to be honest it really is too much motor for the boat. You've got what you've got and I read you post on the splash of the Jupiter --- congrats --- my concern is more with the stress from the torque the 115 would put on the transom area. But as you said, if you're not beating on it , it should be just fine! To give you an idea of the torque in the 90, if I am going 20 MPH the 14 footer and nail it, the entire boat comes out of the water! Fun for a while... but not family friendly!!!

Either way, enjoy and safe boating!

Personally Jim, I like the retro blue look, that with the wood work, and the bubble wrap windshield it has a very stylish and elegant appeal. I had a local welding shop weld a nut to a several large washer to screw onto the flywheel of my 150 hp outboards that worked well when moving my outboards around. Sounds like there are several options available that will work for you.

Father's Day Splash... I'm looking forward to it!!
