Re: 1968 Starcraft Jupiter - Rebuild

As the family and I included are off with the flu... I got to thinking bout a couple of things... has anyone had a large gas tank in the front of a Jupiter before? What is the weight distribution like? Seams to me Ez did... but I can't quite recall... also when working with aircraft stripper, I plan on using a full face mask... I'm thinking this stuff is nasty to one's lungs... anyone else used anything that works as well but is cheaper --- keep in mind I don't have use of a hose at this time of year... so limited water here. What works best to scrap it off... plastic scrapers??? Just looking for others success stories here. Not going the sanding route again. Didn't like that and I am planning on leaving the hull and transom for sure bare alum and possible the sides as well.

I did the no water/plastic scraper thing on my Jet. It was pretty much a drag:(

I don't think you can really have too much weight up there.

IM, I plan on adding large gas tank (from FG Larson) in the Jupiter bow area once I go into the restoration stage..Glad you bought it up. I am bit concerned about WD, too.

Cheers,

MR - based on what Mr. Ez has said and the fact that my boat at least has had the tank up front for longer than I've been alive, it's probably safe to say it'll work OK. I was concert it would be too nose heavy... but ez says no prob.

Question is... has anyone used aircraft paint stripper and been successful?

I used Zip-Strip paint stripper. I'm not sure if it is available in Canada, but the primary ingredient is Methylene Chloride. It did a fairly good job removing 3 layers of paint. It was slower acting in colder temps, and it did require 2-3 applications to get to bare aluminum. I let is work for a few minutes and then scraped with a carbide blade scraper. It was a lot of work, but it did the job. I hope this info is helpful.

Hey IM that is what we used on the Naked Lady, and it works great. We stripped the entire boat in about 6 hours with two guys if I remember right. There were no fumes to speak of. Plastic scrappers work great. Use a stiff bristel brush for around the rivets if your going to polish, we started out with a wire brush but that leaves scratches tat are tough to polish out. We did carry it outside ans gave it a quik pressure wash after to get rid of the residue, just happened to have an above 0 day in the middle of winter.

If your looking for a polisher to help with the polishing Princess has a nice one on sale. http://www.princessauto.com/pal/product/8358970/7-In/7-in.-Polisher/Sander

Thanks rh... great info. It seams like dozer's experience with aircraft stripper is more in line with what I am looking for.

Thanks glen... this is exactly what I was hoping and looking for! Sounds a lot better than the sanding experience I had in round 1 with J I.

Yup, definately sounds like Glen's aircraft stripper is a better way to go. I pretty much picked the zip-strip because we sell it in our store. Didn't have anything to compare it too :)

Re: 1968 Starcraft Jupiter - Rebuild

I had an opportunity yesterday --- so I took it!!! Despite still recovering, I decide yesterday was the day to get the garage reno going. I got outside just before 6:30 am, and wouldn't you know it it was snowing!!! Winter decided to arrive! . I got to work pulling all our stored ummmm junk, no stuff from the garage attic and did the electrical I needed to do and replaced one the main collar ties that was in rough shape.

From there I was able to get to mouse proofing all the spots that had a gap larger than my little finger. I installed new collar ties up higher... but within code. I only moved 3 of them up as the rest are staying put. But this will give my 3 extra feet of headroom in 8 feet of the main section of the garage = good!!! I guess there at one time had been some water leakage as 2 of the 3 came out by pulling them out!!

Next I insulated, vapor barriered and drywalled the ceiling. I have to admit, this was not a treat --- my cordless drill pooped out, so I had to use my hammer drill which is heavier, corded and gives either full power or nothing it seams. So after lots of sweat I got some of it boarded.

Finally I was able to install a new floor in one part of the attic and put all the errrrr stuff back. Finished up around 8:15 pm after the requisite driveway shovelling!!! A good days progress towards getting the jup back in the garage for paint stripping.

I will say this, it really transforms the garage... it has breathing room and seams much bigger... of course it isn't, but it just feels that way. One more step forward.

Have a terrific Sunday guys!

Thanks RH --- me too. I am up rather late tonight --- came back from a night out with a bunch of buddies... one of which is getting married this summer, poor guy ... anyway the topic of the stag came up. I guess we are all getting really old for this stuff... the only planned event involved making sure there would be nap time! There were two strange things being brought on the trip --- a goat and a large roll of plastic wrap  I'm genuinely frightened at this point!

Anyway back to boat business... goal this weekend is a push tomorrow to get the boat back in the garage!!! I'm thinking it may be a tad ambitious... but a worthy goal nonetheless. I really do miss working on it. So much nicer than hanging drywall (no offense to any drywaller's out there!!... So, tomorrow is the big push and what's left over early Sunday morning. I need to get some shut eye... so have a great Friday eve and Saturday. Winter arrived here for hopefully the last time.

Ok... a couple of shots of what I've been up to these days --- just so you guys don't think I'm slackin'!!! It's a bit tough to get shots of a vaulted ceiling... but a couple for you guys nonetheless.

OK... got some good news...
Put in a couple of early morns and late nights this week. Only have a coat of mud to put on tomorrow early am and then the boats back in!!!

So, gonna pick up some aircraft alum stripper to tomorrow am... anyone wanna hesitate a guess as to how much I'll need?

PS... I also installed a nice set up speakers and stereo... so now I can listen to some jazz while chillin' with tinny! :p

Prayers to those who are impacted by the deadly tornadoes and winds... stay safe.

We used 1x1/2 jugs of it on the 87 16SS, it had origional paint, so only a couple coats.
