Re: 1968 15' Starcraft Jet Star Rebuild

Jas sounds like you may have found one but if you don't let me know may have one on my donor boat. Haven't looked at it since last fall but seems it has the same steering set up as mine and your jet.

Yah buddy, I have plenty of boats, motors, trailers and the like on property so I am good! Thanks man.

OK, so I took a run at the transom yesterday...

Fist I bent back the gunwales just a little...

Took the old pulley steering cables, ran them through the drain tube holes, hooked it up to my chain hoist on a beefy maple...

Started hoisting er up. No budge. Jumped on it. Nothing. Strapped the hull to the trailer...
P1050095.jpg

Trailer off the ground, my weight (jumping), still no movement at all! Man, this tiny transom is hanging on for dear life! Pounded on it, pried at it, looked for rogue screws, worked up a sweat, nada, nothing.

I really didn't want to take out the splash well, but...

...out it came. I thought sure it would let loose now. Nope!

So, I mounded a 2x4 and started smashing it toward the sky...

That got her to budge...

I ended up getting a decent template too...

There was quite a bit of corrosion in behind that transom. I think it will clean up just fine though.

Getting that transom out was way harder than what I was thinking it would have been. Glad it saw things my way in the end:D

I also took off the bow plate and rubrails/channels. After that there really isn't anything else to tear off this Jet. So, I kinda put her "out to pasture" till I am ready for rebuild mode...

It was sort of a sad moment, just as I flipped her over it started to rain.

You showed it who is boss. I had similar problems with mine, but it too longer before I triumphed. I like that way you nonchalantly say "I also took off the bow plate". I worked on mine for a long time and couldn't get it off and quit before I broke it. Good for you! Man=1; Aliminum =0.

Glad you're having rain....I'm having snow at the moment :(

Nice work, those old transom pieces get awfully stubborn.

Not sad at all, a nice cleansing phase of life for the old rig. It's probably gonna rain for the next 3-4 weeks so she should be nice and clean.:D

Thanks LL! Yah, I put just a tiny crack in my Islander bow plate. I learned. This one came off smooth.

I totally thought I'd pop it right out. I was dumbfounded how much work it was! I think the corrosion had kinda wedged it in sorta.

Yah, "out to pasture" might be a little harsh. Not quite the meaning I was after. More like "on deck". That's better:)

Nice work jas. Good to se it flipped.

Thanks man! Yah, piece of cake flipping that over. My roast beef sandwich for lunch weighs more than that little aluminum boat.:D

See if it were a glasser you just cut the transom and it falls off. You got stones working on two boats at a time. I had trouble just keeping motivation for one.

Don't worry about it PST...I've heard the dust/resin/fumes can get to ya:) (we'll get ya a tin can one of these days;))

I've been working on two boats for a while now...not working hard, just regular work. It's great since I can usually get one of them ready to take out on the water within a few hours:D

So it was the dust/resin/fumes. I thought it was just old age getting me.

To be fair there was extra cheese on it.:D

Yah buddy, I have high hopes for that Johnson 50 moving this little boat. Should plane out nicely;)

Well I completed the "transom removal" on that 4Winns today PST. I hauled the rest of that hull over to the land fill today. The big CAT front end loader grabbed it, munched it up and spit it out. I had all three kiddos with me and they thought it was a hoot!

Sorry, I wasn't thinking to take photos/video as I am sure some of you guys would have enjoyed it too. I did!:D

Thanks, you're a real gem, thoughtful of you. An all too familiar sight this year, but now it's all gone. Now if we could just get above 35 degrees. Good thing I have a few other prljects to bide my time.
