Nice score, I agree that is a nice slim tank. Not too late to fit it under the Islander deck is it? :D

It crossed my mind brother:rolleyes::facepalm:

That would put me over 80 gal capacity - I have to draw the line somewhere, eh.

80 gal would be nice, until you fill it at $5 a gallon.

Well, epoxy is curing on the Islander so might as well spend some time on the Jet!

Pulled off the whole dash assembly, bow supports, and inner rubrail...

Got the transom caps off and the transom screws/bolts out. Ran out of time to actually pull the transom out.

Here is a better shot of how high she sits on that trailer...

Yup, bunks will be just what the Dr. ordered.

OK, so here is the Teleflex steering assembly that came out of the 4Winns...

That is the same steering apparatus that I have on my SS. Here's a photo of how she connects up.

Do you have a good pic of your 50hp that show what you're dealing with?

There should be a swiveling arm that connects to the end of that cable and secured by one bolt. Pretty easy to hook up but only if you have the sleeve and arm to bolt on.

You've got me wondering if I can lower the SS on my trailer by switching over to bunks. I think it would make my shallow launches even easier. Trailer work...:rolleyes:

Looks like you have a black tube, that the cable end can slide into, starting on the left side of the photo, and appearing out the right side.(BTW is that rust inside the black tube? It kinda looks rust-colored in the photo)

Then the white piece above it has a whole that another piece will bolt onto and connect to the end of the steering cable???

Basically...looks like it will work but you might need to fabricate/buy a connecting rod. I'm sure somebody smarter than me will correct me or explain this more clearly.:)

OK dood, I am with ya! I think I'll monkey with it a little today and just see how it comes together. Seems like I could get a connecting rod cheap off of eBay prolly. Yah, does look like a little rust in that photo, I'll take a closer look at that too.

OK, check this out...

On my steering cable, this part...

...should be sliding in and out when I turn the steering wheel, right? Well it's not really. I'm wondering if it's all froze up?? I can see things moving at the rack end fine.

Sorry about the rookie OB questions - I have only owned em with tiller arms

Imma just drop this here.

You need to take the nut off and take the rod out of that tube. That tube shouldn't went with the Chrysler. You'll need to ebay a "steering link bar". I bought one for my Jupiter and it actually ended up being Chinewalker that sold it to me!

Well that's no good. If you can't get her to move then it's probably a victim of outdoor boat storage in Michigan.:(

I 'spose you could try some deep creep or other lubricating/penetrating stuff, but it has a good 12-14' to travel depending on where it's locked up and could be a waste of time/money.

EZ will stop by soon enough and post a link to a brand new teleflex including the wheel for around $120...so that's probably the best option. Tiller would be cheaper, or you could always go find yet another glasser with good steering for free!:D

Like it was made for that Johnson! (well I spose it was as they are universal, eh) Sweet! Money saved, love it.

Yup, the cable was completely frozen on that tube, totally locked up. Brute force was the tool of the day. The steering wheel now turns and the cable now has travel, though, very stiff. I am certain some lube will have that sliding no problem.

Gosh, these OB's are easy to work on. Boy, those IO guys are total chumps:D

HA and EZ, thanks for stopping in to help guys!:)

Cool, good news! I believe white lithium grease is the ticket for lubing the cable. Mine needs some too I think.

If I manage to kill my Merc any time soon(hopefully...so I can get a good motor) so it can be parted out, you can have the steering arm linkage rod from it.

You're a crack up Teamster! That's one serious tiller ^^^^^... probably twenty times more than Jason's budget for the entire boat!!! :D

Thanks for the offer HA! I did a quick look on eBay - looks like I can grab one for pretty cheap so don't kill that Merc too quick!

Heads up, teamster wants to talk about tillers again!

Jas sounds like you may have found one but if you don't let me know may have one on my donor boat. Haven't looked at it since last fall but seems it has the same steering set up as mine and your jet.

Teamster that tiller looks like it was made by that guy who made that pocket fisherman is that a gearshift or a fishing reel on the side ?

That is Mercs "Big Tiller" handle,...Forward/reverese is the big handle on the side, Trim and tilt is on the end of the handle, And the up/down buttons on the side of the handle are to dial in the rpm's for trolling speed,...
